It's been over a year now since Starfield became arguably the biggest first-party launch of the entire Xbox Series X|S era, and obviously we've seen the arrival of the first major expansion (Shattered Space) this month as well.
As a result, Bethesda has been talking to various outlets about the game's journey so far, and a specific answer to a question about what the team has learned from the experience has been getting a lot of attention on social media. The quote comes from an interview with GamesRadar, which you can see below:
"Speaking with design director Emil Pagliarulo, I ask what the development of Starfield has taught Bethesda that he thinks it'll carry onto future projects. His response? 'Fans really, really, really want The Elder Scrolls 6'."
Beyond this though, Emil Pagliarulo says that he feels great about Starfield's future, both in terms of official content that's planned, as well as the "insane" and "inspiring" mod creations that are developing at a faster rate than expected.
In fact, he even believes that Starfield is the "best game we've ever made" in some ways, as well as the hardest project the company has ever embarked upon. He mentions how the technical challenges of creating such a massive space RPG on Xbox were significant, and remains proud of the ambition to "make something totally different".
So yeah, The Elder Scrolls 6 is very much in mind, but clearly there's a lot of love for Starfield inside Bethesda!

I mean…they’re obviously not going to say anything bad about the game they made and just released an expansion for…
Can’t wait to play es6 in 2036
@KillerBoy sorry, it has been delayed til 38. And Assassin's Duty is launching the same day, so that might shift
I really really wanted to love Starfield as much as i do Elder Scrolls & Fallout but i didn't. Not to say i thought it bad its just very by the numbers & average in pretty much every aspect.
Given my age its likely i wont see ES6. Starfield will probably be the last release from a studio whose games i have enjoyed, played & replayed most of my life. I just get a vague feeling of sadness from Starfield rather than one of continuing a legacy.
Starfield although it deserves to exist it was a waste of time a new elder scrolls would of been the way to go!
ES and Fallout!
Fans really, really, really want a new game engine.
They can joke but Starfield taught me that I shouldn’t look forward to ES6. Starfield’s writing makes Skyrim look like Shakespeare.
Yup. I really liked what I played from Starfield. Loved the atmosphere when night falls on a planet you're mostly alone on. Great game but I couldn't play it... because it feels too much like a Bethesda game and all I could think was I'd rather being playing a new Elder Scrolls.
Agreed. I was only eager for Starfield to come out because it means that Bethesda can focus on TES6. I like Starfield but for me as a primary TES fan, franchises like starfield and fallout are speed bumps. They only make the game I really want take longer. Luckily I can still play Skyrim and Oblivion.
(That being said TES6 will probably be my last game. I just wanna go to Hammerfell.)
I remember having a feeling of dread when I heard "1000 planets". I'd thought and hoped that Bethesda was making a game around ONE planet (remember, planets are BIG) with maybe the surrounding moons and the space between. Imagine every city in the game being on one planet. DLCs could have eventually added more planets maybe. This ended up being the best example ever of a game being spread too thin. The campaign was pretty good actually (although I hated the lazily-designed temples), but this just wasn't a great game overall.
When a developer relies on modders to, not only fix their game, but make content for the game. That truly reflects on the poor quality and leadership of said developer.
That is Bethesda over the last 20 years in a nutshell.
Bethesda: simultaneously the most and least self aware game developer of all time.
Starfield is one of those "why did they make this?" games. Their studio invented a deep, rich, lore-soaked gaming world in TES. Much as studios don't want to be a one trick pony, the heavy world they created and the scope of making games in it kind of necessitates it. Then they bought Fallout which then caused enough problems trying to balance that with their TES series. Ok so then they're a 2 trick pony that can't really find time for both tricks. Then for some reason they decided to create a sci-fi space game with too much scope to ever fit, at the cost of BOTH their major worlds. Just....why would they plan to do that to begin with?
@GamingFan4Lyf "Fans really, really, really want a new game engine."
And given times modders will remake the game in one!
This dude is just patting himself on the back now. Personally, any and all hype I had for ES6 is gone.
Starfield was too much of an idealistic world; it would have felt more like a living world if there had been more discrimination and cults like in Skyrim.
@RentedPanda I'm kind of curious if Avowed will get delayed out of Feb as AC Shadows is there now to really pack the month out.
@Darylb88 I have heard conjecture on a podcast I listen to. It makes sense to move it, but maybe they worry if they keep making changes that makes it look like they don't have faith. I really look forward to Avowed, it sounds like my type of game
