Well, it's happening folks, Red Dead Redemption is officially coming to PC after almost 15 years as a console exclusive. Taken at face value this is great news — and long overdue, might we add — but as Xbox fans, we can't help but be a little miffed at one thing that's just occurred to us. RDR on PS5 and PC will support much higher frame rates than on Xbox.
Yep, thanks to Microsoft's fantastic backwards compatibility program, we've been able to play Red Dead Redemption on modern Xbox consoles for years now - and up to 4K resolution since Xbox One X arrived. However, the game never got an FPS Boost update, which means the Xbox version remains a 30FPS title. Last year's PS4 release runs at 60FPS on PS5, and now this PC version is here to bring even higher frame rates - hardware permitting. Rockstar, we deserve some of this high frame rate action on Xbox as well!
The question is, how does the team get around this strange situation we're left in? We're assuming that the 360 version didn't jive with Xbox's FPS Boost technique so that seems off the table - especially now that Microsoft doesn't update the program anymore. So, do they just go with a full new port like the PlayStation release last year? We've not seen any evidence of that being a potential move from Rockstar yet, but who knows.
Either way, we think this needs sorting somehow, some way. We reckon the best course of action, unless the 360 version can be updated, would be to drop the newer port on Xbox with a discounted upgrade path for 360 version owners. Then, those who think it's worth upgrading for the extra frames can do so while others can continue to enjoy the existing backwards compatibility title as-is!
Back when Rockstar first announced that PS4 port for Red Dead Redemption last year, we actually praised Microsoft's backwards compatible version as a reason to not pay more money for a fresh release. However, with that PlayStation version since supporting 60FPS on PS5, and this new PC release coming later this month, we're feeling a bit left out in the 30FPS cold over here. Microsoft, Rockstar, how about some 60FPS Red Dead action on Xbox?
How would you tackle this Xbox conundrum? Give us your ideas in the comments down below.

I'd prefer more new games and more backwards compatible ones instead of 60 FPS for this.
My favorite game and i really don’t want to play it on PS5 cause the controller isn’t my favorite. I try and keep PS for Exclusives only. I would love to see this get 60fps and 4K. Even if that means they need to bump the price up. Now RDR2 not being 60fps is a crime. I can only assume rockstar ain’t doing it until next gen. Which if that is true. Then it should run near PC level.
I think rockstar probably are busy with other things right now over an update for the original red dead redemption 🤷
Another day another missed Xbox release/re-release/revision of a game. Getting so old it kind of feels like Xbox is going the way of Nintendo.
@kuu_nousee except with Nintendo, it’s mostly because of a hardware issue while with Xbox, it’s more of a player base thing.
But companies will find some way to get their presence on Switch since of the high install numbers on Switch, they’re not gonna outright ignore it.
Removed - unconstructive
I would just like to see them keep supporting more FPS boost in general.
@anoyonmus I'd agree a player base thing on Xbox if you mean the majority of Xbox gamers don't buy games. 100% that is true as most of my Xbox friends never buy a game just play what's on GamePass except Madden, College Football, or of it wasn't on GamePass Call of Duty. Then they wonder the games I'm talking about on PC and PlayStation never [or 1-3 years later] make it to Xbox. They literally stopped buying games but GamePass has 34 million payers. Microsoft trained (tricked) most Xbox gamers to not purchase anything anymore.
@sixrings my series x is for disc games, 360 bc, and a few online games now as I don't sub to ultimate anymore. I hate it tbh, but Microsoft did it to themselves. I'm either getting a PS5 Pro or will just play majority on PC until Microsoft decides to release some games worth a damn or move on to next generation hardware with a fresh start.
Let's just say that 30fps is more cinematic, and closer to the Western movie roots and be done with it.
Oh... really ? this is Rockstar here. They don't care about creativity, they care about money. You want a nice patch 60 Hz ?
Wait for the REMASTERED version, in.. few months ...or never.
I'm not sure that looking on with envy is something that those who love their Xbox should be doing right now?
PC players can always have a better experience if their rig is good enough, and with the arrival of PS5 pro, it's likely that will be the best place for most console releases too, especially given about 70% of people who bought an Xbox have a series S.
If you love your Xbox, accept that there will be other versions out there that will offer better specs than you will get, but enjoy your platform for what you like about it. Gaming should be about enjoyment, not envy.
@Medic_alert I mean it's not everyone. For me even more important than it being free, the backwards compatibility version keeps save files intact. I'd take that any day over 30 more frames per second. Heck, I truly can't even tell the difference (outing myself). If they want to do a high end remake I might be interested. Otherwise I'll take my $20 (I think even less than that; it's been a while) 360 copy with backwards compatibility any day. Arguably Rockstar could do both and just port the new version over... but historically they don't seem to like backwards compatibility and "remaster" versions existing on the same store front. I don't want to deal with another GTA definitive edition mess. I would hands down love it if Microsoft and Rockstar gave the game an FPS boost (really Microsoft should go back and continue the FPS boosts for far far more games in general). But again not that huge of a deal for me. Generally I hard prefer back compat to releases and for no reason other than I'm lazy and don't want to lose my save data (for any game, no matter how little it is).
@Titntin This aspect of choice is one reason why I'm excited if Xbox and Microsoft can continue pushing for Xbox Play Anywhere. I love consoles for a basic plug and play experience. The level of quality hardly matters. I don't even have a good enough TV for it too and I'm glad I have cheap options with Xbox that supports that. If rumors are true and we're getting a next gen Xbox in 2026 and interviews are true and Xbox stays on this 5 to 6 year cycle moving forward, then I think Xbox play anywhere and PC will really close the gap. Xbox consoles become the home gaming device, but if you want a super end experience with your Xbox games or even just a mid Gen upgrade, the answer isn't to wait for a "pro" model, it's to just buy or build a PC. That also keeps costs down for other users. My series S holds up really well and is all I want out of console gaming. plus it's perfect for my needs because I travel a lot. I did also buy a series X at launch (which I'm just saying both together cost $100 more than a PSPro is going for without a stand or disc drive so I feel good in my purchases), but due to constantly traveling and a busy schedule I've only actually used the Series S really, the Series X has been the few down months I've been home so maybe like 12 months or less since I bought both in 2020. Seriously if Xbox went the PS route I just wouldn't be gaming this "generation" (the price matter but it's really the size of series S that sold me). I'd be exclusively on my Switch (which now I haven't turned on in the longest) until the steam deck and handheld PCs dropped.
I don't know if I'm alone or not, but I like the potential future of Xbox holding on prices and keeping up with two major models (a low end and a high middle end) and then telling everyone that wants something more or to gawk at graphics to go build a $1000 to $3000 high end Windows PC and access their play anywhere library through the Xbox app (which ideally in the future will grow a lot; though it's great now, all first party, most Japanese third parties, and some really nice third party support in general, but it can be much greater and should be nearly every game eventually at least).
@WildConcept6
Thanks for your reply. I completely get that what you need will vary from household to household. I rarely travel and never use a handheld - If I turn on the switch its docked!
The only thing I disagree with is that the Xbox app and store on PC is pathetic and always has been. Even when I had GP ultimate and there was a game I wanted to try on PC on the service, I'd end up getting it on Steam so it would work properly.. If they are serious about going across devices, they need to get their software front end correct and not provide us with the half finished nonsense they have peddled for so long!
<rant mode off>
@Titntin I never said the Xbox App was good, lmao. I've watched it grow since it first launched on Windows in beta. It's always blown my mind how much worse it was than ever other launcher and storefront (which is saying a lot) despite being the native windows gaming launcher (in theory). I still find it hilarious when they stopped calling the app a beta and it's still... not as good as any other storefront. That said looking back it's also blown my mind how fractured gaming efforts has been inside Microsoft.
Xbox Play Anywhere is amazing and I love it, but it and game pass are the only reasons I touch the Xbox app at all. I agree if Xbox really wants to grow on PC, they HAVE to buckle down and improve their storefront and launcher. And I have watched improvements over the years but it's still just no where near good enough. Ironically enough steam deck as competition and the push for windows gaming Handhelds have really made do more. But yeah it's still... yeah....
At the end of the day though that's the benefit of PC. I can access all my Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass games and I can ALSO buy and play games on steam and enjoy mods and (in theory) emulators and even take the free games on Epic I'll never play and (in theory) get a completely DRM free game from GOG and so on. I've only just gotten into PC gaming a bit myself through my Legion Go (I got a steam deck and then really wanted a windows handheld) and I'm loving it. I think my future is PC gaming with Xbox consoles to complement. xbox play anywhere games on Xbox and PC, GP Ultimate for Xbox, PC, and Cloud, but I can still buy whatever on Steam (or Xbox) or any PC storefront. Like I can and have bought PS first party games on Steam. It's just nice when the full ecosystem just works AND I can take advantage of it without being trapped by it.
@WildConcept6
I hear you mate. Its a shame I don't do the handheld thing as The steam deck or ROG are good bits of tech. I do have a £4K PC rig, but I'll admit, it's very rare for me to ever play it.
I'm much more a lounge gamer so really my box needs to sit under the telly with my sofa right in front of it. You can do this, but its a faff, so in reality its consoles I play - I have a PS5, Series X and Switch under the telly right now, but I've not used the series X in a long time, so I've agreed with the wife to sell it.
It's the PC I'm typing on right now - I bought a 48 inch LG c1 oled to use as may main monitor (I have another ViewSonic to the side as a secondary), but I barely game on the PC so it all seems a bit of waste to type stuff on the net. I occasionally dabble in UE5 development, so it gets used then a bit!
Seems like the whole Xbox echo system could suit you well, especially if they release a hand held, so you are in the right space!
To me it's mind-boggling when you see people defend 30 FPS games these days. Not talking about this game specifically, just in general. I'm thrilled to see this game freed from the awful 30fps limit, which has always hampered my enthusiasm to replay it. The fact that it is finally coming to PC is icing on the cake.
@Titntin This has nothing to do with Xbox hardware being outdated. RDR1 runs at 60fps on PS5 so it can run at 60 on the Series as well. It's just that Rockstar saw no reason to release the remaster because the original game was backwards compatible. But unlike the BC version, the remaster was patched to run at 60, something that FPS Boost can't do because you need to change the game's code, only Rockstar can do that. So it's just a silly situation where R* though the remaster won't sell well because of the original version being available.
@vrubayka
'This has nothing to do with Xbox hardware being outdated.'
I completely agree and never said any different so why are you addressing this to me?
Loading time as long as 360. disappointment
Funny how people were al complaining at games not hitting 60fps. Now all of the sudden it’s ok being 30fps
@Titntin Because you said "If you love your Xbox, accept that there will be other versions out there that will offer better specs than you will get".
@vrubayka.
.. Erm, ok. Thats not stating xbox is outdated? The simple fact theres always been a better version on pc of any xbox game is simply the reality of it and it was a fact on series x launch day as much as now. It doesnt follow that xbox is outdated, its simply not a high cost pc.
Sigh... At least we still have the multiplayer I guess.
@Titntin I just thought it's a strange comment to leave on an article about RDR1 not running at 60 FPS on Xbox.
@vrubayka Really? You can agree or not agree, but when the discourse in this thread, and indeed the article itself, is all about Xbox not having parity with the other versions of the game, then commenting that other versions will always have a performance difference anyway is absolutely bang on target? How is that not absolutely and completely relevent to the subject under discussion?
You twisting that to somehow imply I stated that 'Xbox was underpowered', when I clearly did not is the post that's irrelevant in this thread.
I cannot understand your logic at all? However I do appreciate that you took the time to try and explain what you were thinking, so thank you for that. I wish you a great day.
@Titntin I wish I could like your comment more than once. Folks need to take a breath and remember this wisdom… games should be ENJOYED
