Five years. That's how long it's been since Xbox and Rare first revealed Everwild to the world, and as of early June 2024, we still have no idea what kind of game it's going to be. The good news is that it's still being worked on at least.
This is according to Windows Central's Jez Corden, who spoke about it on a recent episode of The Xbox Two podcast. As of late last year, Rare was also still hiring for the game, so clearly it remains a priority for the team.
Here's what Jez had to say:
"I've heard Everwild's still coming... Everwild is not cancelled, it's still trucking along. I don't know what the game is, but it is some kind of online game [with] multiplayer - we knew that from the original trailer anyway."
Obviously Rare has been busy with Sea Of Thieves recently and may not have any plans to show Everwild at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase, but then again, we're hoping that it might have made enough progress to reappear.
There are still so many unknowns surrounding Everwild as we head into this summer, but even half a decade since the first reveal, we remain very intrigued about what Rare is cooking up with this one. Let's hope we get to see it soon.

I hope this one is in the showcase since I think it was shown off even before Hellblade 2 if I remember correctly. I’ve been curious about it since that first trailer. I’m not holding my breath though.
So I guess Rare is all in on live service. Such a shame I'll probably never see anything I want to play from them ever again.
@MrMagic yeah rare makes awful games until they come to PS and sell boat loads. I kid i kid… most games these days are online but i would love to see rare do a Banjo game for Xbox. There is a rumor they are working on it with another team and it could even be shown this Sunday. I’ll believe it when i see it. But that would be killer.
From all i've read it seems this game was created in completely the wrong order. They first came up with a design aesthetic and mood and only after all that decided to try and make a compelling gameplay loop to fit those ideals. Completely backwards. This would still be a bad idea if it was behind closed doors but some genius at Microsoft and/or Rare decided to show the non-existant 'game' to the public. Foolish.
Hopefully they can recapture the magic of sea of thieves. They hit a homerun on that one.
Just a guess but I'm assuming some of the issues were from pressure to make it live service and not them creating a world with zero ideas for a game in it. They probably had at least the framework for what it would be but rebooted what the gameplay would be a few times. I think there was some click bait antics behind the rumors.
Based on applying absolutely zero logic, I don't think it will be at this showcase. However, it does have to show up eventually, and one of these showcases WILL eventually be the one at which it finally reappears, so we also have to tone down our skepticism of its appearance at least at some point.

I really don’t have any faith in this being discussed in any form this year… just wishful thinking of what might have been….
@MrMagic really breaks my heart. Even as recent as the 360, Rare was still making bangers like Viva Pinata.
Oh what I wouldn't do to experience that game for the first time again.
Don't get me wrong, Sea of Thieves is fun. But I need more Rare than that. Gimme another Viva Pinata. Or better yet, another Conker.
Spencer mentioned going to the studio to check on Everwild progress in an interview...over a year ago.
I guess like most developers with this sort of game they are tying to find that hook that niche that gives it the edge and must have vibe so it sells millions in one way or another.
@MrMagic While I do think Sea of Thieves looks interesting, I wish Rare would go back to making single player experiences with no live service in place. I actually prefer playing games that are longer and offline over games that are supposed to or intended to be played online; it’s why I always go back to playing their older games so many times even after completing them and why I haven’t purchased Sea of Thieves.
Their older games had this sort of charm to them and they always tried to innovate or add twists, which I feel is somewhat missing with modern Rare and some of their modern titles. Unfortunate they probably won’t go back to doing what they used to do, since a majority of the original employees that brought so much magic to the studio left.
I am interested in Everwild and might get it when it does release, but if it does turn out to be live service, I’ll probably be less likely to play it. The development cycle sounds to be messy, since they seemingly started with the visuals and design first and THEN the gameplay afterward, which is probably not the greatest way to develop a game.
As long as I can play the game alone, I'm fine with any online features. I hope it is what I think it is and it's basically Viva Pinata with exploration lol.
I’m a HUGE fan of Sea of Thieves so I have no complaints in regards to Rare at all, at least since MS took them off of Kinect duty. I’m not a big fan of live service, but there are a few out there that are amazing and if a developer can achieve that….well, I wind up sinking more time into those than I do the vast majority of other games. Can’t even begin to estimate how many hours I have put into Sea of Thieves. I’m looking forward to whatever they put out next.
looks awful. hope it never comes out.

I have been surrounded by artists for close to 35 years. Filmmakers, photographers, painters, woodworkers, metalworkers, glass blowers and even a bunch of automotive designers thanks to the art school I went to. If there is one thing I have learned in all that time its that there is no singular path for creativity. There might be methods that are more popular than others, but that doesn’t make alternate methods wrong.
One of my favorite examples is the architect Frank Gehry. He would crumble up pieces of paper and throw them on the floor in front of him and would actually get inspiration for designing entire building from it. The very famous Walt Disney Concert Hall that he designed was partially inspired by this method, which most architects deem an absolutely insane method of coming up with architectural designs.
Limbo is a game that was designed in the order you mention. The first thing nailed down was the overall look and aesthetic of the game. Given, that game doesn’t have a big story element at all, but it does show that a game that takes that overall approach can in fact turn out amazing.
Wether that method was the right method for Rare and this game…well, that remains to be seen…
Another game that has the gestation-period of an elephant !
@Medic_alert “ Why wouldn't Rare be on the chopping block if this becomes the next big failure?”
Sea of Thieves… As long as a studio has something successful to fall back to. I don’t think we’ll see Microsoft closing down that studio.
@RIghteousNixon You are of course right, there is no ‘right’ way to be creative. Fair point, well made, excellent Gehry example. I am mostly salty that i was sucked in, like many, by the stunningly different aesthetic Everwild presented. IF they can make this route work it isn’t the ‘wrong’ route, but that is yet to be seen and the reported difficult development seems to suggest they have struggled working backwards.
That said I still stand by my second point that it was utterly foolish to showcase this to us the consumer when there literally wasn’t a gameplay loop and there was still a good chance this game would never come together. They have boxed themselves into a corner.
The difference with something like Limbo is that, from what I read, they already had a rough ideas of what that would be i.e. a scrolling platformer even if the visuals came first, they weren’t reinventing the wheel. Whereas Everwild wanted to be something different, a bold ideal, eschewing the usual ‘violence’ gameplay that most games fall back on. I suspect that if we ever do see it it will fall short of what they aimed for.
@themightyant
Yeah, I can totally agree with your point. It never should have been shown at such an early stage of development. I don’t know if Rare was just excited to show it or MS being desperate for exclusives to show made the call to show it publicly so early on.
While there is nothing wrong with starting with the visuals first, I think it’s pretty important to get much further than that before you even think about showing it off publicly.
