Happy 4th anniversary to Everwild! Well, it's kind of an anniversary anyway, as this month marks exactly four years since Rare's new IP was first announced back at X019 in London during November of 2019.
We haven't heard much about the project in 2023 aside from a couple of social media posts, but Rare is clearly still working on it! The company is hiring for multiple positions that mention work on Sea Of Thieves and Everwild.
For example, here's what a job advert for an Engine Programmer says about the role:
"Our cutting-edge Engine team are seeking an aspiring Engine Programmer to join us. You would be working across both Sea of Thieves and Everwild, collaborating with game teams to identify scalable approaches to new problems, optimising and hardening new and existing systems, tracking down tricky bugs and developing new runtime and workflow capabilities to enable us to continue delivering experiences the world doesn’t have."
For those who haven't been in the loop, we've seen all sorts of stories about Everwild over the past few years suggesting it's undergone some major changes internally at Rare, and for now we still don't really know what it is.
Xbox Game Studios seems keen to keep this project in the background and remain quiet until there's something significant to say, and ultimately that's probably for the best. We're certainly hoping it'll end up being worth the wait, but there are plenty of skeptics who question whether it'll ever hit the market at all. Only time will tell!
What are your thoughts on Everwild so far? Do you think it'll ever come out? Tell us down below.

Meanwhile, awesome Rare IPs in limbo.
The game will be done when it is done. I would rather MS ship a quality game then rush out something like Redfall was or that has flawed concepts. Gamers and gaming journalism needs to be paying attention less to what is not here and pay more attention to what has shipped and is here. There are plenty of games this year to play in almost all genres.

Holly oranges, talk about time flying by us all. I gotta say though, it's a long time/resources spent on something we’ve basically know nothing about, here's hoping they'll be ready to show something off soon(ish)🙃
This reminds me of another Rare IP: Perfect Dark, I know it's a different studio but the lack of news is not very comforting there either.
A lot of real animals have lifespans shorter than the time between Everwild's announcement and now.
@Markatron84
....but mostly insects right?😉
My spider sense is tingling that this is many many years away if “ever” … see what I did there?
@AlwaysPlaying
"Wild" statement.
@Sol4ris I found a list of animals with the shortest lifespans. I won't share it because it's sad and I don't want to ruin someone's Thanksgiving weekend 🤣
This is going to be another Scalebound, isn't it?
Hiring? Eeesh! I was hoping this would finally be out next year. Obviously better to delay than launch unfinished but equally better to cancel and move onto something else if development stalls.
This job posting suggests that Everwild is GAAS in the same vein as Sea of Thieves, but that doesn’t mean it’s super far out, as that element could expand as the title matures, similar to how Sea of Thieves has developed. I’ll be honest, I have no idea what to think of Everwild at all, outside the fact that it was announced too soon, but I do hope it’s solid.
@themightyant to be fair they are hiring for Sea of Thieves also; which released in 2018! So doesn’t mean too much; other than the fact that the game still exists (which is good to know).
That being said I don’t see it as a 2024 game. I feel like 2025 is the due date for a lot of these projects; Everwild, Perfect Dark, Fable, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution etc (maybe Gears 6) but they will space them out.
I’m really curious what is going on with this game. I will patiently wait. I know there’s been a lot of negativity towards Rare after the N64 days but I do have faith in them.
It's hard to feel much about this game since we know basically nothing.
Feels like way longer than 4 years....
@Banjo- you and I usually agree on things. I love Sea of Thieves, it’s still really popular and evolving. It’s so underrated.
@Deshalu Sea of Thieves is one of the most beautiful games ever and it's full of features and content. I like playing it with friends 😊.
Based on the listing, it doesn't seem to indicate anything about Everwilds Status. For all we know, they could have the majority of the game built but maybe the 'engine' itself is not enabling them to put the pieces together in the way they want and/or track bugs etc as well as they'd like to fully realise the game they want to make.
If its more down to optimising and bug fixing rather story writing, character design, environmental artist etc, that's more indicative of late stage development to me but who knows...
Rare says that three development teams were matched during the 64 era. There should also be a team to create a classic IP.
