We've been wondering for years whether Xbox might eventually get into the VR market, and although there's no sign of a PlayStation VR-style device on the horizon, we're apparently getting an Xbox-inspired Meta Quest headset!
This is according to a blog on the official Meta website, which talks about plans to open up the Meta Quest operating system to third-party hardware makers. The section about Xbox is limited to just two sentences, but it's very intriguing.
"Xbox and Meta teamed up last year to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to Meta Quest, letting people play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality. Now, we’re working together again to create a limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox."
The image you see at the top of this article is also provided by Meta, although it comes with a disclaimer that it's "not an actual product render". If anything about the image is correct, we're assuming this VR headset will still be used for Xbox Cloud Gaming rather than native VR integration - although that's just speculation on our part!
Ultimately, we really don't know enough about what Xbox and Meta are planning here, but it's certainly something to keep an eye on. Is this the start of something big, or is it pretty much just a novelty version of the Quest? We'll see...
What do you think Xbox and Meta are working on here? Let us know down in the comments below.

Come on, just let people connect the Quest to the Xbox like the Quest link/air link/steam link. Let devs release VR games on the store, there's basically no risk for MS as it's Meta actually making the headsets. Then if it's popular release their own.
I've not played on any VR headset so my opinion is really empty. But I still really feel VR is complete waste of time currently. In another 15 years? That very well could be different story then. Could be insane awesome.
Wtf. Why is Xbox working on a cobranded console for someone else's vr platform while not even supporting vr?! Although I guess if they're competing with Sony all the need is an hmd, they don't actually need to make games for it
Seriously though. Just support quest on Xbox already. Why make an Xbox quest when you can't play quest on Xbox? Who would buy an Xbox themed quest just to play pancake games strapped to their head?
Also, streamed vr ... Yikes.
@GuyinPA75 The trouble for business is that it's expensive to get into and the market isn't big enough yet. It's absolutely not a waste of time as a player if you like it but hard to profit from as a business.
It's awesome to play though... Shame is still so expensive.
I just spent my tax returns on the meta quest 3. Cloud gaming is pretty good on it, hopefully xbox is getting serious about making our digital libraries available outside the xbox hardware (streaming, xbox app for pc/mobile).
I really hope meta is going to open the platform up a little more to other app stores like steam.
I wonder if this will be able to play games. From what I recall, the last limited edition Xbox branded hardware that could play games was the Halo Infinite Series X in 2021.
Excellent!
A Special Edition Xbox with Meta Quest Bundle.
This is definitely something Xbox is planning to release with the next generation of consoles.
If xbox start supporting vr, I hope they let you use other brands too.
Is that Halo Infinite in the marketing image?
@AccessibleDaydream Yes, it is!
@Kieduss Microsoft is actually advertising Halo?! Boy, oh boy, do I hope we see that new game from 343i (and, if I’m not mistaken, Certain Affinity) at what-was-once-called E3!
‘Xbox and Meta teamed up last year to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to Meta Quest, letting people play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality.’
I don’t understand why you would want to play on a 2D screen with some VR headset when you can have an actual real TV in front of you?
Yeah, can't actually see the headset itself because of the ad banner.
I have Zero interest in VR gaming. The only use for a headset I feel I have is to act as an alternative screen if I can't use the TV for whatever reason.
@Techno92LFC If you can't connect to a TV, for example the wife is watching something, then you have an alternative. Not only that, you could have a much larger, albeit Virtual display. You may have a 55" or 65" TV, but you could have a 120"+ screen in VR.
Would be cool to see MS get involved in some manner.
I'm a huge fan of VR (& 3D), and it's a bit of a shame seeing VR start to flatline like 3D before it (even if Meta seems like they're trying to keep it trucking along). I miss the days where Sony was pushing it enough that it seemed like we got a few good VR modes or spinoffs of notable franchises in a year (and actively developed software themselves too), but those days seem to have stopped with PSVR2.
Still, I hope to get a Quest 3 soon, as it seems like about the only viable platform left.
I just got a meta quest 2 on a big discount as an impulse buy, I need to try game pass out on it. My first headset I also bought as an impulse buy back in 2018ish was a WMR headset and gave me massive motion sickness, so I wanted to see if something newer and better would solve the problem. So far it's been better but I haven't tried any games yet.

Well PC supports VR just fine, so the next gen "Xbox" should be good to go.
