Update (Mon 11th Dec, 2023): Well, we definitely won't be seeing an Xbox release for The Day Before! Developer Fntastic has announced that due to the game "failing financially", the studio is shutting down as of today.
You can check out the full statement from the Fntastic team down below:
"Today, we announce the closure of Fntastic studio. Unfortunately, The Day Before has failed financially, and we lack the funds to continue. All income received is being used to pay off debts to our partners."

Original story (Fri 8th Dec, 2023): Years after it was first unveiled, The Day Before has officially entered Steam Early Access, and it's safe to say that players aren't particularly happy with what's described as a "post-apocalyptic open-world MMO" by developer FNTASTIC.
After its first day on the market, The Day Before currently has an 'Overwhelmingly Negative' user rating on Steam, with just 16% positive reviews at the of writing. We haven't tested the game out ourselves just yet, but PC users are claiming that the game isn't really an open world MMO at all.
Take a look at one of the top reviews, for instance. The Steam page's 'most helpful' review claims that this is basically a small-scale extraction shooter with zombies in it, rather than an open world undead-filled MMO as promised. Here's a chunk of that review:
"This is not a Open World MMO, This Is a small area extraction shooter.
The city is dead and there are barley any open buildings. There are no survival elements in the game because its based on being a extraction based shooter game like tarkov. Shame the game could have been the next day z. I would not recommend buying this game. Most of the city isn't open anyways."
Another user review claims "this game is a scam", noting that The Day Before has no survival elements, a lack of any sort of progression system, and frequent bugs and crashes have cropped up since they started playing. Both users have about an hour of playtime logged, and there are hundreds of reviews of a similar nature.
As far as we know this game is still planned for Xbox Series X and S at some stage - supposedly when The Day Before leaves early access and hits its 1.0 release. We're not holding out hope though, we just can't see this one ever making it to console to be honest!
Did you always see this outcome on the horizon like a lumbering zombie heading towards you? Tell us you were right down below.

@Kaloudz a last minute entry for worst game of the year? I can see Gollum wipes his brow and saying “whew my precious”
redfall is saved!
Well who didn’t see this coming?!
The game that was obviously a huge scam turned out to be a huge scam? Well sh*t!!!
@rustyduck As much as Redfall was, and still is, an absolute dumpster fire, it somehow looks like a GOTY contender when compared to Gollum, TWD Destinies, Rise of Kong, and this.
“The city is dead and there are barely any open buildings.”
Well there’s your problem! You got barley stuck in there!
This ***** looked like a scam from the beginning.
It's blatant false advertising... I mean you can go on steam and it says it's an MMO SURVIVALin the description.
To be 'fair', there was a LOT of scepticism that this game would actually release with some claiming it doesn't exist. Therefore this 'early' Access Beta is proof that they have developed 'something' and therefore proving those people 'wrong'.
However, and here is the crunch point, it really does seem that it is 'very' early access - not well optimised, not exactly well populated and rather 'basic' and clunky movement too.
For its setting too, it seems particularly empty. A big City with all those Skyscrapers that 1000's of People would occupy, yet you maybe only see 1-3 'Zombies' - hardly a 'Survival' game when it seems so deserted and empty.
It either requires a LOT of work to bring that 'early' access Beta to the potential they themselves aimed for before it goes on General release or its another game that promised more and under-delivers at release. Whether they turn it around (No Mans Sky/Cyberpunk) or not, either before 'general' launch or after, time will tell, but it hasn't created the right 'first impression' with this 'early access' game.
What's been released here, it wouldn't surprise me if it was cobbled together at the last minute. Bear in mind that there was absolutely zero mention of early access until they announced the December 7th release date. Also their complete reluctance/refusal to show gameplay for years, and when they finally did it was not only not representative of the game but also they couldn't even do a good job of faking showing the guy playing it. Now it turns out that the game isn't even a survival MMO, it's a bad extraction shooter?
Oh, and let's not forget the rampant and flagrant copying of trailer direction and promotional material. Or the fact that a big chunk of the developers weren't/aren't even BEING PAID FOR THEIR WORK.
Oh!!! And the developer has been deleting any media claiming the game was ever called a survival MMO and has closed its Discord because of all the complaints and "toxicity".
The writing was on the wall with The Day Before from day one and, sorry, but anyone who held out any hope that the game wouldn't be an utter dumpster fire is a literal idiot.
@BAMozzy the developer has a track record of not sticking with their games, so don't hold your breath.
@Markatron84 I certainly won't hold my breath - but things do change during development and the game isn't officially released yet either - its early access beta.
I don't know about the Devs or the Studio but they wouldn't be the first to 'over-promise' and 'under-deliver'. My point is that maybe this isn't the full product, its an 'early' build to get some feedback and constructive criticism. Its not a full price release and could still be years away from its 'full' release.
I won't hold my breath, but I also don't tend to buy into games before they are fully realised so I can make a more informed decision about whether to buy. I wouldn't be critical of a project in development - particularly 'early' development as things can progress and change by the time it does get a full release.
All I can say is that early impressions are not great and it seems they need to do a LOT of work to get the game up to the standards we expect and they 'promised'. Its early access may well of proved the game exists, but also now may kill off its chances of being 'successful' - but also maybe tell the developers that they are a LONG way from realising their ambition and nowhere near 'ready' to release the game in this state....
@BAMozzy Fntastic hasn't just over promised and undelivered. They've been outright bullsh*tting for years. Yes, this game isn't "finished" and it's in "early access", but that's not the whole story; I outlined some or it in my prior post but, of you haven't already,, I urge you to read up on The Day Before's "development" up until now, and there are also plenty of YouTube videos that dive into it. This is a case of blatant dishonesty and Fntastic shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt here.
Article has been updated! The Day Before developer Fntastic has announced that it is shutting down permanently due to the game "failing financially". 😱
Shocked face
I'd say hopefully anyone who worked on the game lands on their feet IF FNTASTIC WERE PAYING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Now that the studio and game are officially dead, here's a sort of summing up of everything that's gone on with The Day Before so far.
Woohoo! - we dodged a bullet there, folks.
For every Cyberpunk or No Mans Sky there are hundreds of these stories……
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Brilliant, anyone who actually bought this scam is a mug.
They managed to fleece enough people out of £40 then it seems, I mean I know people can refund via Steam but I guess some of them may not have and this has provided them something to cut and run with.
WOW! I had been intrigued by the premise of this game. I hadnt even heard about release dates until it was out and doing terrible. Consoles dodged a bullet on this one....and from the sound of it LOTR Gollum did as well. As I'm pretty sure we have the worst game of 2023 right here.
@CHAOSbutler117 even if Fntastic didn't close and The Day Before managed to limp on for a little bit, there's absolutely no way the game would ever have actually made it to consoles. This wasn't console players dodging a bullet; this was console players standing there while a bullet was being fired a few hundred miles away.
@InterceptorAlpha holy smokes, there were TWO bad Walking Dead games this year?!?!
If a team of 1 dev made this and sold it for 1 buck it wouldn’t be so bad and probably would’ve gotten proper funding
It threw me when it was discovered that they didn't own the trademark to the games name a few years after development started , what compamy doesn't check these things out before they come up with a name ???
I'm really not surprised as I recall they had two different trailers at one point that seemed not contradict what it was aiming for. It was in development for five years and what they finally had to show for it was a completely different kind of game than they were claiming they were making and one that was pretty empty from what I seen. The reason it failed financially is they suddenly tried to get the money back they spent from people just expecting them to buy something that isn't in any kind of playable state and not what they have been promising for years. Once people started sharing videos online they must have realised no one would buy it.
@Kaloudz I was having this conversation with my wife yesterday, and I think it's highly unlikely Fntastic will see much money come their way from this.
One would assume that when a company sells a game on Steam, or any platform, the platform holder doesn't just take their 30% cut and give the publisher/developer the rest right there and then. Valve probably records the sales of a game then pays out every month or every quarter. This way they can account for refunds (which Steam will issue no questions asked provided the purchase is less than 14 days old and you've played the game for 2 hours or less) without having to chase companies up for the money.
The number of people refunding this game will likely be very high. Obviously there will be people not eligible for a refund, but I would also hope that, especially as the game has already been delisted, Valve will be more forthcoming with refunds in this case.
Well, here's an interesting development. The Day Before publisher Mytona says anyone who requests a refund will get one, and Fntastic will receive no money from sales of the game.
Everyone knows only Ubisoft can get away with scamming people with "open world" games...
