The Golden Joystick Awards 2023 took place earlier today, and Starfield took home the Xbox Game of the Year award!
Bethesda's epic RPG managed to beat Dead Space, Hi-Fi RUSH, Planet of Lana, Chants Of Sennaar and Pentiment in securing the award, while Resident Evil 4 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom took home the equivalent awards for PlayStation and Nintendo respectively.

Not gonna like, I'm kinda floored a multiplat took Playstation's game of the year. Legitimately was expecting it to be Spider-Man. Edit: Missed that Spider-Man 2 was released too late to be nominated
Baldur's Gate is absolutely no surprise.
Though, I'm curious if Xbox's winner would have been not been Baldur's Gate 3 if the Series S hadn't held back the release.
Probably so given that it took PC's which also had Starfield.
These awards are a bit confusing... I am assuming that Game of the Year does not mean exclusive given that the PS5 got Resident Evil 4 to earn that award, but how come a game can be the best platform game of the year and a whole different one still be "overall best game of the year"?
Starfield is my personal game of the year.
1. Starfield
2. Pikmin 4
3. RE4
I heard that Phil Spencer took home the award for βBest Xbox CEOββ¦.
@Tharsman In this case, likely because BG3 has some technical issues late game on PS5.
But yes, platform specific GOTY does not have to be an exclusive. Still surprising to see RE4 remake beat out Spider-Man 2. Edit: Missed that Spider-Man 2 was released too late to be nominated
@Rioichi They make perfect sense. See above.
there's a lot of better games this year than starfield zelda spiderman pikmin 4 and a few others I personally think hi fi rush deserves xbox game of the year
@Dan1283 but those are child games. starfield wins.
@InterceptorAlpha Spider-man 2 was released too late to be included in the vote as was Mario Wonder, Alan Wake 2 and a few others.
@InterceptorAlpha Spiderman 2 wasn't a nominee.
PS GOTY nominees were:
@eduscxbox @themightyant
Ah that makes a bit more sense. I missed the nominees. Updated my post.
Currently my list is:
1. Zelda: TotK
2. Spider-man 2
3. Metroid Prime Remastered
4. Mario Wonder (not finished)
5. Cocoon
6. Hi-Fi Rush
7. Starfield
8. Jusant
9. Quake 2
10. The Last Case of Benedict Fox
Still to play: Sea of Stars, Alan Wake 2, FFXVI, Baldurs Gate 3, Dead Space, Dave the Diver, RE4, Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Lies of P, Blasphemous 2, Dredge, Avatar and a whole lot more. Insane year
@themightyant don't play BG3 this year, mate! My list was almost torn aparat by all the awesome games battling for the first place... But then 200 hours of that freakin awesome fantasy epicness entered my life. And now I am 100% sure with my personal GOTY.
Alan Wake 2 still my personal GoTY, even having been playing BG3 on PS5. AW2 probably will be on my favorite games of all time list.
The fact I can play 99% of these games on my Xbox S is a win for meβ¦
Plus some insanely great games missing an award shows how legendary this year has been overall!
@Tomato_Goose LOL. I'll steer clear! Realistically I'll probably only finish Mario Wonder and maybe 1 or 2 more this year, probably Dead Space & Sea of Stars. Everything else will have to wait.
Are you out of BG3? Touching grass? What are you playing now?
This was a good year all around for gaming imo.
@AlwaysPlaying the good thing is as a gamer we can play all these great games this year on gamepass and every other system now that's a win in itself π
@themightyant guess, I need something small to take a break from BG3 and big games in general before jumping into Spider-Man 2. Might spend some time in Diablo 4 second season or grab a couple of small indies: DREDGE / Dave the Diver / Hall of Torment. Sea of Stars is also on the list, but it surely require more time, even though it looks so cozy.
@Rioichi
I don't know why a multi-plat game cannot be GOTY on a given device. Are you saying a multi-plat game could never be better than an exclusive?
The award wasn't PS Exclusive GOTY, it is PS GOTY.
@Rioichi
To me, the best game for a platform is the best game that shipped on the platform. The best game is the best game regardless of exclusivity.
With the exception of RE4:R(Spidey 2 missing out the nomination) all other winners were nothing if not predictable.....looking forward to play more Cocoon, HI-FI Rush and Pentiment.
So RE4 is GOTY on PlayStation but on Xbox itβs Starfield. Does it mean they think Starfield is better than RE4?
Doesnβt seem right
A game with a player score of 3.4/5 on the Xbox Marketplace is considered Game of the Year now? Standards have fallen!
@tatsumi Yes. That is how the votes turned out. RE4 is great (played on PC) and Starfield is great (played primarily on PC).
MK1 getting Best Multiplayer over SF6 with how beginner friendly the game is be kinda wild.
@tatsumi it feels either they wanted to give RE4 an award or as BG3 is on PS that it wasnβt any good on PS? I think the formerβ¦ shows Sony had an off year like Xbox had last year. Strange they went RE4 instead of FFβ¦
Well deserved, BG3 is fantastic and easily my GotY.
How did FFXVI not win GotY for PlayStation?
@Dan1283 Hi-Fi Rush was definitely my favorite Xbox game this year. Starfield is great but I had so much more fun with Hi-Fi.
@Rioichi because according to them, it was the best game in PlayStation this year. They never said you couldn't play it anywhere else. Simple.
@Dan1283 all this does is tell us you have a particular taste in games. I wouldn't touch most of what you stated, and I have all 3 consoles (but the switch is definitely only for the wife).
@themightyant Maybe they should do these GOTY awards in January... Doesn't make much sense as it is, since many games don't make the cut.
@themightyant Nice list. Great to see a unique pick in Benedict Fox on there.
My current list is:
2023 in Games
1. Final Fantasy 16
2. Alan Wake 2β¦ for nowβ¦ still working on itβ¦
3. Super Mario Wonder
4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
5. Resident Evil 4
6. Pikmin 4
7. Forspoken
8. Cocoon
9. Mortal Kombat 1
10. Hogwarts Legacy
11. Hi-Fi Rush
12. Tren (Dreams)
13. Nour
14. Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
15. Humanity
16. Belle Boomerang
17. Viewfinder
18. Assassinβs Creed: Mirage
19. Jusant
20. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
To play: Super Mario RPG and Baldurβs Gate 3
Truly the most insane year in gaming in absolute ages. Honestly, I canβt think of another year where Iβve had to cut 8/10 tier games from my top 20 list. Iβve never played through more games in a single year, not even 2020 when I had time on my side for it. (Jeez, should we consider Metroid Prime Remastered as something that qualifies for these lists? I saw it in yours and manβ¦ I might have to sit down and really think about where Iβd place it in my listβ¦)
@Gabrielmpf not sure why the timing, but it looks like later releases can be considered in the next year, since Pentiment was a nominee and it released in Nov 2022
@BacklogBrad
Is starfield that good? I am tempted to get it on pc, but i am not sure my pc will run it wel. Thats why i am still doubting.
Love all the videos i saw in youtube.
Good lists and worthy winners.
My own preferences:
BG3
Sea of stars
FF16
Crew motorfest
Zelda Totk.
Not played spidey 2 or mario yet.
Biggest dissapointment is Forza Motorsport, its not just souless, its a mess.
Doesnt matter how you look at it, its been a great year for gamers.
@The-Chosen-one to be honest Starfield is a complete mess. Crashes every play session, glitches everywhere, poor animations, poor graphics, 90% fetch quests, poor ship mechanics, poor scripting, huge amount of time watching load screens. Game feels very last gen.
However, I'm on about 70 hours and completely addicted. Gun play is satisfactory and I'm enjoying the scanning planets missions - basically a poor man's 'no man sky' but still enjoyable part of the game.
How it won game of the year is baffling because objectively it's nothing impressive in the slightest - but although it sounds a rough write up I do like it and may even end up my most played game this year. But if someone told me it was awful I wouldn't argue with them.
@The-Chosen-one if you really like fallout 4 or skyrim, you should also like starfield. It definitely has the bethesda formula but their games have always been my favorite.
PlayStation Game of the Year - Resident Evil 4
Seriously? Remake? Not a Baldur's Gate 3, Spider-Man 2 or Final Fantasy XVI? Are they mad?
@somnambulance nice list too!
Benedict Fox has its problems but I loved many things about it regardless. But I havenβt played that many 2023 games yet so It will probably drop off my list by years end.
I wasnβt expecting Metroid Prime Remastered to be so damn good, would have been criminal to not include it.
Hi-Fi Rush was robbed
@themightyant Iβd maybe put Prime before or after TotK. Itβs sooo darn good as a remaster. I think Iβve tried something like 50, 60 games this year and completed 30-ish. Iβm a game blitzer though, not a completionistβ¦ and I had two periods of health issues that got me some more gaming time than Iβd typically have. Gotta think about the positives from that type of stuff, of course. What a year though. I donβt know if itβs possible for anyone to complete every good game this year, even the pros. We are truly blessed this year. Have fun with finishing Mario Wonder!
Weβll have to trade notes when we both finally tackle BG3.
Also won most refunded game as well from what I can see. Please note this is my research on Internet not a poll site. We have both Playstation 4 and Xbox series X. This is not Xbox hate I just think it's important that devs get all recognition not just top praise.
@BacklogBrad from what I read on it people were expecting that plus more as the game is much newer, it's the plus more side let it down not fallout/Skyrim side.
@Ceedog109 the game feels newer than fallout as the gun play and movement feels much better. Visually it looks great too aside from the bethesda dialog scenes.
I think people got it in their heads that the game was going to be something else and took it out on the game for not being what they wrongly believed.
There aren't too many games that I drop 200 hours into right at launch.
Fair point better than mine.
@HPUnicraft it's on gamepass though so it's always a star or 2 lower than it actually would be as it's full of idiots review bombing 1stars. Usually it's the indie games that get it most thoughπ₯
@Decimateh I don't know about that man. It seems super unlikely that Xbox players review bombed an Xbox game. 3.4/5 is very high compared to my completely legitimate review.
@RBRTMNZ every game on gamepass gets review bombed just because people can lol reviews mean nothing tons of good (mostly indie tooπ₯) games get it all time people one starring saying indie π© pixel trash without even playing em. Seen games get reviewed all 8 9 and 10 out 10 or even 9 and 10s still get 3 stars on Xbox. Seen some games be say 4 stars on Xbox then drop to 3 when come to gamepass because of all the mongs on gamepass been able to review without even playing lol
@Decimateh You compelled me to look through the ratings on the xbox store and you are right that exclusives do have a lot of bad reviews but after reading through them I still don't think they are review bombing.
I think it's more just the place people tend to express their frustration when an exclusive game doesn't work right. Metacritic review bombs tend to regurgitate bad faith talking points whereas a huge portion of the bad reviews on the xbox store are describing very specific technical issues. I would not personally give a game a 1/5 due to a technical issue but I also don't think it's illegitimate.
Additionally, whereas most 1 star reviews on other exclusives are almost entirely focused on technical issues, Starfield does have a lot of thoughtful 1 star reviews from people simply disappointed by the game. They're much more substantive and unique than typical review bombs and seem like criticisms from people who actually played.
And I am not saying review bombs do not happen when games hit Game Pass. I just thinks its more likely to happen to indie games like Thirsty Suitors with queer themes and interesting art. Rather than some concerted effort by weirdos who like xbox enough to spend money on owning one but somehow still hate it enough to waste their time review bombing.
Starfield probs if different as I seen lot of things saying its hit and miss but wouldnt be surprised if people did 1 star for no reason. Ye it is mainly indies tbh but seen other games get it same. N I dont mean people have got it just to review bomb but literally every gamepass game seems to get alot of one stars for no reason people see it n because its not a game they like or wanna play they review one star just coz they can instead of just not playing it.I reckon if you had to actually had to play a few hours to review games on gamepass they'd all jump up one or 2 stars . Yeah that thirsty suitors deffo got π©on on Xbox reviews had 2stars last I looked but it's reviews were good think mainly 8 9s maybe a seven but works out a 4 on Xbox lol. Xbox must be lowest every review scores just because of gamepass π
With more awards too come I bet this is just the beginning π«¨πππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ
