The long-awaited Starfield finally released on Xbox and PC back in early September, and the consensus around launch was largely positive - including here at Pure Xbox where we scored the game 9/10. However, despite a decent Steam reception on release (the game sat at a 'Mostly Positive' rating for a good while), the Bethesda RPG has now dropped into the 'Mixed' review category on the PC platform.
If you head over to Valve's storefront right now, Starfield has a Mixed overall rating based on just over 75K reviews. Of course, these are all user ratings where the reception is often a little more harsh, but it's still disappointing to see the game drop into a lower category here.
For comparisons' sake, Bethesda Game Studios' three previous releases — Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 — all have 'Positive' ratings in some fashion. Yes, even Fallout 76 now has a 'Mostly Positive' rating after multiple updates from the BGS team.
Now, there's every chance that Starfield's rating could improve - Fallout 76 hasn't always sat on that positive review spectrum on Steam. In this case, we'll be keeping an eye on things as time progresses and more Starfield updates land - we just thought this was an interesting development in the release of Xbox's first big Bethesda RPG.

It deserves a mixed rating for sure. Theres a lot of ambition, but there’s also a lot of flaws with it. I mean, how Bethesda went from their typical open worlds to procedurally generated open areas is in trend with the current era of gaming, but at a fault. For having galaxies at your fingertips, Bethesda’s games have never felt smaller than Starfield. I think the heart was there, but, much like Fallout 76, I think the vision wasn’t executed the way Bethesda felt it was. I really want to like Starfield more than I did.
I think its a case of Expectation as a First Party studio and what Bethesda Games have always offered. I think expectations were much higher for Starfield - not only because its their first 'next gen' only game, but also because now they are owned by MS.
They expected a 'generational' leap in Graphical presentation and something that felt modern, cutting edge - not something that felt more like Fallout from the 360 era in Space with all the antiquated NPC interactions and lifeless characters. The engine too seems to be creaking and showing its age too...
It hasn't really evolved much from the days of Morrorwind...
Its a good game, so the rating seems a little harsh?
The level of promises made was far too high and set unrealistic expectations. I think less promises and then over delivering might have won more hearts..
It's not a disappointment seeing the game drop into the mixed reviews section, it's a disappointment Bethesda made a mixed level game. Review scores are meaningless really.
@BAMozzy said it correct IMO. It's an average game because it hasn't evolved in the slightest. It's still enjoyable because Bethesda Open world games generally are, but it's nothing to write home about. I do think they will be under big pressure for next Elder Scrolls. A Skyrim clone won't really cut it anymore.
i enjoy starfield very much with almost 300 hrs in
but
the main quest is awful. i didn't like playing some parts and hate the story. and why not show a little ship moving star to star instead of a loading screen?
If being completely fair, then very positive, but I think it deserves overwhelmingly positive.
Once the game gets into the hands of people that judge a game on its own merits and the number of reviews stretch from a hundred or so 'professional' reviewers to many thousands of gamers, the review score tends to more accurately reflect the quality of the game itself. That said, there is always the risk of people down-voting the game, without ever having played it, because it is not on their preferred platform. So although it has now received a rating of 'mixed' it is probably a point or two above that, once you remove the salty reviews.
Personally, I think it would be better if people had to link their console profiles before being able to vote, so as it ensure only those that have played a game (and in the case of Starfield actually have an Xbox/Steam account) can review it, in much the same way as people can only review a game on the Xbox Store if they have actually purchased it.
Lastly, I always tend to prefer the review scores given by the community over 'professional' review scores. Steam is usually my go to place as you know only those that have played a game are able to review it, added to which the number of people leaving reviews tends to be in the thousands or even tens of thousands, meaning you get a much more accurate overall review score...
I don't trust user reviews. It's stupid how many times I have seen 1 star reviews only because the game "is not in my language". I know Starfield is probably in every major language but it's just an example on how stupid user reviews are.
I don't get what people were expecting. Yes, it has Bethesda jank and the menus are quite bad. Regardless (and bearing in mind I have not played Baldur's gate 3) it has the best narrative and quests of the year (of the last 5/6 years more accurately) and it is easily my favourite game of the year
I enjoyed it ,but a 9/10 it is not, mixed seems fair
I put as much weight into steam reviews as I do into user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Which is none at all
@Balta666 by other bethesda rpg standards the quests are extremely poor ,phantom liberty has far better.
I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve played. I’d at least put it in Positive. But it’s Very Positive from my point of view.
in some months the mod dev kits are released and it will end up back into positive. It is what it is. Most of the "mixed" reception comes from people mad the game isn't on PS. Tough.
I think “mixed” is about right tbh. It has some good points, but also quite a few flaws. I uninstalled it a few days ago to make some room for newer games.
Just finished it over the weekend and liked it less and less as it moved along. 6/10.
MIXED seems about right. It had some great moments and I liked it enough to play for 200+ hours, but at the same time there are so many issues with the games design, lack of ambition, time wasting, bugs and more. Crucially it doesn't live up to previous BGS games or expectations. 'Mixed' is EXACTLY how I feel about Starfield.
@Mephisto2869 I like cyberpunk quite a lot but I disagree the quests are poor in starfield (imo are equally if not better than Skyrim ones)

You can filter by time played on Steam, it's one of the unique features on that platform. Though obviously the longer you play a game the more likely you are to have positive things to say.
Yet plenty of players played 50, 100 or 200+ hours and had negative things to say.
The writing is just horrible. Terrible story and quests. Not a single character in the game that is memorable. That angry bald guy shouting about how it's BORING was right about Starfield.
I had a mixed relationship with it. Some good, some dire. The creaking engine it was made in is what kills it.
It may be ‘Bethesda least buggiest game’ but that is nothing to shout home about. We are in 2023 and should be judged by what games bring now.
If it had Warner bros (for example)on the side instead of Bethesda it would be judged much harsher and nobody would bat an eye on it being mixed.
@Balta666 fair enough ,but in my opinion, there's nothing in starfield that rivals the dark brotherhood quest line,or the thieves guild for that matter, best character in starfield is the dude locked up ,sorry cant remember his name,so much missed potential for evil doings.
I actually bought FO4 for my Deck and been having a blast because I just missed playing a solid Bethesda game with exploration. It's really depressing how bland Starfield is. After the 20 same POI and 4 Temples, I just couldn't anymore
It's like having a Supreme Pizza for every meal, a little bit of everything and great at nothing
@themightyant
That is one of the most interesting thing about Starfield. The more you play, the more you see the flaws.
Overwhelmingly Positive for me. Its an incredibly built sandbox. Perhaps many were expecting an action-rpg, but this game is a Space Exploration Sandbox first, and Action RPG second. It also has a narrative to boot, and all those concepts together and I think Bethesda have done an impressive job!
Also think the negative critic reviews on it have affected other player views. People have been clocking up over 100s of hours and still rate it 6/7 out of 10 which is strange. Also a lot of complaints about inventory management which perplexes me. I mean that's why you save a lot of money to buy a bigger boat-i mean ship! It's a true role-playing experience which I think most people are not accustomed to.
@somnambulance I'd argue that going procedurally a generation was then going back to form as both Elder Scrolls Arena and Elder Scrolls II were both procedurally generated. Honestly something I had been hoping for after how small Oblivion and Skyrim were.
That say, after nearly 200 hours, I definitely do see some flaws. Even though I've only ran into it once, I feel that they should have pushed for seem less procedural generation instead of having to travel via ship. I suspect the Series S's anemic amount of RAM at slower speeds played a part in this.
I feel they should have allowed on planet flight of your ship like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen. They could have slowed down on planet flight, when compared to space, to allow the system to keep up with the procedural generation as well.
On top of this they dot have nearly the number of assets for randomly generated assets to keep up with the planets. I've been to every system and landed on over 100 planets. And I know I've raided the same facility atleast a dozen time.
I'd expect this is gen 1 of their new procedural system and they may be using it for the new Elder Scrolls. That said, they need to expand on rebuilds, or expand the system to randomly generate dungeons as well, a la Arena and Daggerfall.
On other things: even though I don't use the jetpack, don't even have a point it, but I feel land vehicles should have been included as well.
Mixed is spot on to me.
I can play the game indoor fps action and think I’m really enjoying this game and also the space combat.
But the old game engine and development and game systems then change my mind about the game and what it could have been. I could almost be playing on an xbox360 game system wise at times.
Bethesda are not really that good to me now.

Personally I agree completely, but many don't seem to feel that way.
Im enjoying it not to the level of elder scrolls or fallout but it is good and you can see so much was put into the game it is unique and I'm looking forward to see the changes to the universe in new game plus some are crazy that I've read online it's a strong 7/10 for be and I think with dlc and updates that rating will creep up to 9/10 eventually
Mixed is correct! I’m still playing it, but there is a deep lack of creativity and repetition baked into every aspect of the game.
Although mixed is the most popular choice look closer at the percentage 51% rate it over mixed for such sky high expectations the game had that's ok
Starfield - all style and no substance
@Carck Why would Steam users care about it being on PS though? They can just play it on PC.
@Kevw2006 most steam users own consoles, it’s not a mutually exclusive market
The writing and characters are flatter than a pancake. I'm playing AC Valhalla at the same time and for a franchise that's been overexposed to death the writing and characters are 10 times better and more interesting than Starfield.
@Carck Isn't there a requirement to have a game in your library on steam to be able to leave a review? If so, regardless of whether they own consoles, why would they care about it being on PS if they own it on steam?
It was one of the reasons I bought Xbox Series at first place. But haven't really got into it yet, it didn't captivate me but I want to give it another chance
So my opinion quickly changed over the course of one night 😆. I ran into a game-breaking bug yesterday, twice now that I've had to restart, although the first time I didn't actually have to. But I don't think I've got it in me to go through a new playthrough anymore.
First time was a bug in New Atlantis for the power re-route activity in the underground. It bugged out saying I needed computer access. Since this wasn't a main quest, I didn't need to restart but I did because I'm a quest completionist.
This time round, it's blocking my game progress. The into the unknown mission bugged out for me, not generating my quest marker for when I have to track distortions. Apparently the bug occurs if you didn't follow a specific quest order, and I don't have a save that goes so far back.
I've enjoyed the game immensely so far, but I can't take another restart 😅. If I can't find my way around this, I'm done with the game.
I haven't played it yet - so I have no real horse in the race here - but I take the Steam-reviews of high-profile AAA-titles with a huge grain of salt. A lot of people use that as a venue to vent their frustrations in order to "punish" the developer for a multitude of reasons not always relevant to the game itself.
If the game is good, the "Mixed rating" will go up over time as the trolls move on to something new to be pissed about.
And to be fair - I'm not saying people are automatically wrong for giving this - or any game - a negative score, but I'll personally disregard any review that can't even muster up a coherent text explaining why it's bad.
An example; Overwatch has taken a beating in the Steam Reviews recently. And I'm not saying that's undeserved. But one of the top reviews last time I checked was a single word; "Bruh!" and a negative rating. It's only there to gleefully pile onto the games negative PR - to the delight of people who already hate the game. New players looking for a well-reasoned opinion get no value from that.
I'm sure Starfield has its share of similarly vapid brainrot.
Playing Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty immediately after Starfield definitely shattered the rose tinted specs I went into it with. It really laid Bethesda's shortcomings bare. Still enjoyed it a lot. But mixed is pretty much nail on the head even if it is represented by two extremes!
