The brand-new release of Quake 2 Remastered is full of great surprises, and one of them is the ability to support up to eight players on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC in the local multiplayer mode.
How many people will actually take advantage of this remains to be seen, but it's at least getting a lot of attention so far, with multiple fans taking to social media to highlight just how crazy the eight-person option looks in practice.
Xbox fan Bede x has taken this one step further by sharing a video clip of the feature (which you can watch on the official Xbox website), and while it looks like it functions and performs just fine, you're definitely going to need a big display to show everything clearly!
If you'd rather stick to the more conventional four-player local multiplayer option, you can do that across all platforms - so that means Xbox One owners can join in the fun as well. Or, you could just go online and hop into 16-player matches with Quake 2 fans on every platform thanks to the fantastic addition of crossplay!

8-player splitscreen sounds cool until I realize I don’t have 8 friends, let alone 8 friends nearby with Xbox controllers.
Hahaha my situation entirely
I'll try this with the four people in my house just for the crazy. 8 is nut-so. Cool, but nut-so.
I love how this remaster laughs in the face of the Red Dead port. Bethesde done a fantastic job with this release.
@EvenStephen7 technically you only need 7 friends 👍
With my eyes, I'd have no chance doing well in 8-player split-screen, even on a large modern display.
I tried the online multiplayer. I thought it was absolute trash. The single player game is very good though.
So whoever wins is just a really good multitasking screen watcher.
