Following rumours that Bethesda was planning to release a remaster of Quake 2 at some point this month, the game has been announced today as part of QuakeCon 2023, and it's available right now on Xbox Game Pass!
"Developed by id Software in 1997, Quake II is a critically acclaimed first-person shooter that introduces an entirely new science fiction narrative and setting. Now, experience the authentic, enhanced and complete version of the original."
This upgraded version of Quake 2 comes with high-definition widescreen support, enhanced models, improved enemy animations and gore, enhanced cinematics, anti-aliasing, depth of field, up to 4K/120FPS support, and much more.
It also features both of the original mission packs (The Reckoning and Ground Zero), an all-new expansion called "Call of the Machine" featuring 28 campaign levels and a multiplayer deathmatch map, and a free version of Quake 2 64.
Better yet, this new version of Quake 2 includes online and local multiplayer support across its co-op and versus modes, and all of this is accessible via crossplay! There's also bot support for online and offline deathmatches.
Supports four-player local split-screen multiplayer on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch.
Supports eight-player local split-screen multiplayer on Xbox Series S and X.
Quake 2 is available to play right now with Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Windows PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming, or you can pick it up at the low, low price of just £7.99 / $9.99. Enjoy!

Let me be that first - yes!!!! 🎈 confetti 🎊
That's a nice suprise
Gotta say, they killed it with the launch of this thing and on PS as well. This comes in the fast of 2K rereleasing a straight port for the price of a brand new game
@Kaloudz we are getting closer to our Quake reboot i hope. I really want ID to do it right on the consoles and PC. The shooter market is boring for me at the moment. I would give all my time to a Quake reboot.
So how does this compare to Quake 2 RTX?
@HonestHick definitely a game that needs rebooting
I still waiting for Quake on Xbox with raytracing like one that's been on my PC for ages.
The question PX posted the other day about whether we would want an updated controller. This is the only version of this game without gyro aiming.
I wouldn't even mind if it was a stealth update to controllers going forward and they started patching in gyro aiming to older games that have it on the other consoles.
With Xbox being the only 4K console I have, I'd happily buy a second controller if it included gyro over any other feature listed in that article so I can play games in 4K with a bit of gyro for precision aiming
The prophecy has come to pass.
@ralphdibny have you played an fps with gyro aiming? I have for splatoon and I found it so odd, so confusing I never once considered it again. My kids couldnt really use it either so I dont think it was a boomer problem.
for retro games like this I want to play them as god intended - in their original form. gyro aiming is so overrated...only by people who don't have it because it sucks.
also: this release is sweet.

Add another one to the list of games to get to this year. Sigh…
In all seriousness, loved this game back in the day. Definitely excited to give it another go. And you want to talk about making Rockstar look lame as f***.
One of the first FPS games I recall playing. Nice surprise, definitely gonna give it a shot today!
@JayJ Quake 2 RTX looks much better overall due to it's RT but enemies seem to be slightly more detailed in this remaster, plus you have the expansions plus a new one and Quake 2 64.
@Cashews so you gonna mouse and keyboard it for its original form?
I've done both kinds of gyro aiming. Wii/PS3 Move style where I agree, it is a bit odd but it is cool and better for slower paced games.
But the modern gyro aiming where it's basically twin stick but you can just edge the aim by moving the controller is actually brilliant. I used it when playing through the Dooms on Switch with the Pro controller and thought it complimented it nicely 👍
It's not like the waggle of old, it's just micro movements for extra precision
Can't say anything about Splatoon as I've never played it unfortunately. But yes I agree, this release is awesome! 👍
Something I will say for those who are likely to rant about PS5 not getting 8-Player split screen...
Sony have had a hard cap of 4 controllers on one console ever since the PS3. It could support 8 players on one console... if you could connect 8 controllers.
@ralphdibny good point on the kb/mouse.
this is the type of game pass games we need. now lets get some old school moh style indies on gp.
Very cool. Downloading it now.
@Dan1283 my fingers are crossed this is what ID is working on a reboot to Quake like they did with Doom. I would be all over that game day 1. 😊
@Kaloudz yeah buddy, here’s hoping for some good news at some point on what ID has been working on. Doom has been done for a while. So the next project should have some decent time invested into it by now i would like to think.
@Kaloudz it isn't. From reddit:
"The difference is huge! In fact, this is a completely different game! There are completely new levels, music and a couple more additions compared to the PC.
A big digital foundry video on it:

@Moonglow Hexen could be really cool. I prefer Quake but would play Hexen. The thing is there are rumors of the Quake reboot with a single player that has a female lead character. So unless that rumor is just way off, something is brewing for quake. When the ABK deal finishes that would allow the 2 original teams for a Hexen game which at the time was Raven and ID. So if MS would allow Raven to pull away from COD and team up with ID they could do Hexen and that would be really cool. Time will tell.
@HonestHick I love I'd and doom eternal is such a amazing game I'm hoping we here about what I'd are making soon such a great developer along with machine games
@Dan1283 yeah Xbox having them in house is a huge win. I really hope they can get some big games out for Xbox as we need all the games we can get. Especially cause i just don’t care for battle royal shooters. That whole genre does nothing for me other than making me feel old since all the young kids live in those shooters.
Still hoping DOOM 1993 & DOOM 2 get updated for online co-op & multiplayer. It's very, VERY strange you would choose to only include Local play and not both. Wonder if they'll do Wolfenstein 3D at some point.
Going to play it coop in the office tomorrow, but already did some single shooting now… and…
QuakeII is STILL a masterclass in shooting games! 🔥🔥🔥
Surprise is a strong word, more like it's there now, go get it. We all knew this was coming
@carlos82 Interesting and nice to know. Thanks!
@Cashews
I’ve been using gyro controls for most shooters that support them since the first Splatoon. Typically I’ve always thought it works really well. I still use the sticks for most camera movement but use the gyro to line up precision shots. It takes getting used to but it’s worth it in the long run.
Shame this version doesn’t have the gyro aiming. It does take a bit of getting used to, but once you do it’s hard to go back. Being able to just add that slight extra bit of precision over the sticks takes me back to my mouse and keyboard days. Will be a blast though on whatever platform I play on!
Also, I’d happily take a Quake or Helen reboot! Preferably both!
@ralphdibny I agree, they should make a controller with gyro. There are some great gaming experiences on PlayStation and Switch that we can’t have on Xbox because of no gyro, and one of them is better aiming.
@Cashews okay, a few things to counter here because I think your comment was a bit too protective of Xbox.
1. Splatoon’s gyro controls are a game changer.
Almost all the pros use it. I watched a video talking about it and the top Splatoon 2 player from Japan didn’t use it. He switched to to gyro and got better.
2. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean others don’t like it.
3. If you want to play this game as “God intended” then use a mouse and keyboard.
This game wasn’t on console until years after PC. So don’t be elitist just because Xbox doesn’t have a feature.
4. This is an enhanced game and has been updated for its time. Gyro controls are a thing of this time just like 4K visuals.
5. Let’s love Xbox but let’s not allow our over protectiveness to hold Xbox back. Xbox lacks a key feature that some people can’t live without. What’s best for Xbox is that that feature gets added in the future.
There's a whole new area in the first map, nice!
@ralphdibny Though its expensive, I solved the issue of my Xbox having no Gyro by buying a Xim Nexus. Rediculous that I had to in this day and age, but MS are not going to level up and do it, so you pay for it or don't have it.... I find the Xim works really well, and is a nice pad in the hand too....
@Kienda
This game is way too fast for gyro controls
@Kienda maybe I'll try it again on Splat 3 and fool with the sensitivity a bit. I am willing to change!!
Splatfest this weekend and I havent played in a long time. Good time to try something new(ish).
@Rmg0731 Its on Switch too
@Woodinghal it really isn’t. You just have to adapt to them.
But everyone has their own tastes. I just think it’s best to allow all types/options available and people can decide for themselves.
@Cashews my son hates gyro on Splatoon, so it isn’t for everyone. But my daughter and I love it and my aim on Splatoon 3 is far better than in other console FPS games as a result of it.
But I’m still best with mouse and keyboard. Luckily Xbox supports that on most shooters.
@Kienda I was considering getting a little kb/m if Cities 2 supports it on the console.
