Justin Roiland has officially left the High On Life development studio, Squanch Games.
The team announced this last night in a social media post, stating that they will "keep developing games we know our fans will love while continuing to support and improve High on Life". You can take a look down below:
The departure of Roiland follows domestic violence charges against the Rick and Morty creator, which has also seen Adult Swim cutting ties and presumably planning to recast the show ahead of its seventh season.
Back in December, it was announced that High on Life had become the biggest third-party Xbox Game Pass launch of all time, as well as the biggest Xbox Game Pass launch of 2022.

They'll continue to sell the game and profit from it though.
Their morals and ethics only go as far as a small gesture. Their morals end when their finances begin.
He helped build a great game
@dreadful
Why wouldn't they? A lot of people who probably did nothing wrong worked on it.
You pay people for their work, and then reap the financial results.

It's a real squanch to see the squancher of squanch games squanched. I wish he hadn't squanched all that bad squanch and just kept his squanch in his pants
@ValentineMeikin what about him being documented trying to have sex with several minors
@dreadful There isn't any moral posturing from them. Squanch's statement makes no judgment, it's a very plain. Overtly a self-preservation move for the company.
You can't recast Rick
Justin Roiland's lawyer: My client is innocent! Unrelated, he's also resigned from his company...
That’s him cancelled
@grumpypotato that's a given, I believe in this situation it is more important to point out that it's okay to continue liking the media once you find out something really bad about people behind it because you see a lot of shaming for that and even attempts to outright cancel the art itself.
That's too bad. I've never watched Rick and Morty but I thought Kenny was hilarious, I kept switching back to him all game.
@Lup then why are people boycotting the harry potter game? Lots of people worked hard on it, right?
I was enjoying this game till i got a game breaking bug on the skrendal bros mission.
@dreadful
Good question. I find it really stupid. My most anticipated game for sure.
But that indeed shows my point.
@dreadful because people are not very smart in general
@Lup Cancel culture at it's worst on display here. Let's punish people completely unrelated to the offender. Guilty by association. A terrible display of modern society...
@dreadful No evidence that they knew he was a domestic violence offender when they made the game. Why should Squanch be punished for something someone else did?
High on Life does not exist in a vacuum ......
I know nothing of what he's accused of, and I'd never even heard of the guy until the game came out. But I do have to say I didn't have much regard for the guy based on his writing. Then found myself impressed with him in his interview with Larry Hryb. Apparently my initial impression was accurate after all. It's kind of the behavior you'd picture from someone that writes the way he writes, really, but the personality he reflects in real life seemed a lot more serious. Shame.
Much as I dislike his writing, the main reason people liked this game was the writing, and I don't see how his creations/productions can really continue without the "mastermind" behind it that people tuned in for.
But what I really want to know is what P.J.'s opinion is?
As I help people fleeing this sort of DV for a living, I cant help but have utter contempt for the man.
That should not extend to his work though, but when the title concerned has a frivolous approach to violence it starts getting complicated.
Glad I finished high on life already or I'd stop playing it. It was OK, but hardly revolutionary and I would'nt play another one, even if this guys complete lack of decency and control had not been exposed.
I feel sorry for the devs and team he helped assemble who will inevitably be affected by this. Its not their fault he was an Ars*****.
Wasn't he one the big dogs there?
@Benjamin Maybe that's why he got into gaming? Bigger selection pool.
@GuyinPA75 He's the founder.
Pretty much the problem with cancel culture is simple.
Rick and Morty, along with High On Life, are full of low brow humour that is a hallmark of Justin Roiland's roles. I don't give a ***** if three years ago he was slapped with a restraining order about a former girlfriend, or if he did indecent acts with kids when he was younger.
It doesn't matter in the present day... until it does. They could cast Christopher Lloyd as Rick Sanchez, and find a soundalike for Morty, but it wouldn't quite be the same.
The anarchist has been forced to quit the business because the business didn't want him.
allegations, claims, not a reason to do anything
@Kaloudz Fully agreed with you, mate.
I respect people who decides not to consume/buy/like something (VG, music, books) based on the creators life...but if we start to apply that criterion, we would have to cut out a lot of great art made in the past centuries.
Really not a fan of this cancel culture. It would be nice if we didn't obsess over every reason to remove people from things.
@Trmn8r It's moments like this that show off how we have become a society that no longer values value. Like we apparently couldn't care less about what value people bring, we only care about their social politics.
