Update: Fallout 4's next-gen update is officially now live on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S!
Original story: Fallout is going through a boom period on Xbox, so it's perfect timing for the Fallout 4 next-gen update to release on Xbox Series X and Series S! We're probably only around 24 hours away from its release on Xbox Game Pass at the time of writing, so ahead of launch, we wanted to put a quick guide together about everything you need to know.
So, in the sections below, you'll find more information on the Fallout 4 next-gen update release date, release time, FPS details, features list, and even what it means for the Fallout: London expansion on PC.
Let's take a look at all the Xbox-specific details for the Fallout 4 next-gen update:
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update: Xbox Release Date
The Fallout 4 next-gen update releases for Xbox Series X and Series S on April 25th, 2024.
Anyone who owns the Xbox One version of Fallout 4 will receive this update for free, and it should also be accessible via all versions of Xbox Game Pass including Xbox Game Pass Core. That's a lot of players getting access this week!
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update: Xbox Release Time
The estimated release time for Fallout 4's next-gen update is around 10am / 1pm ET / 6pm BST on April 25th.
As noted, this is only "estimated" for now as Bethesda has yet to reveal an actual time for it - we're basing this estimation on when Fallout 76 updates often roll out, but who knows what kind of plans Xbox might have in store here.
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update: Features List
In terms of the features coming to Fallout 4's next-gen update on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, the big highlight is new Quality and Performance modes with support for up to 60FPS along with increased resolutions.
Bethesda has yet to reveal any specifics about those performance details - and we don't yet know how they'll apply to the lesser-powered Xbox Series S - so we'll have to wait and see just how impressive they end up being.
"This free update includes native applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. Experience up to 60 FPS and increased resolutions!"
The Fallout 4 next-gen update also brings free Creation Club content to the game on Xbox (and other platforms), including a quest called "Enclave Remnants", a Makeshift Weapon Pack and a Halloween Workshop.
In terms of PC specifically, there's also now going to be widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, along with various quest updates and stability improvements / bug fixes.
Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update: Xbox One Benefits
Although the Xbox One doesn't get a next-gen update for Fallout 4, it'll still receive a free update on April 25th.
The update includes stability improvements, login and quest fixes for the last-gen version of the game.
What Does This Mean For Fallout: London On PC?
Fallout: London, which is a DLC-sized mod for Fallout 4 on PC, was recently planned to launch in April of this year, but has now been delayed following the announcement of the Fallout 4 next-gen update.
The developers seem frustrated that Bethesda's plans weren't communicated to them ahead of time, and now there's no specific release date for Fallout: London as things stand - it's simply been delayed indefinitely.
So, those are a few more details about the Fallout 4 next-gen update on Xbox! We haven't got very long at all until it finally arrives on the platform, and we can't wait to get stuck into Bethesda's 2015 adventure all over again this week.

6pm isn't to bad won't be able to play anything till after 7pm anyways hopefully there's a big difference and it's noticeable I loaded up fallout 4 last just to see where my last character was left and the game looked a lot better than I remembered
The PC update also makes the game Steam Deck verified.
All I'm bothered about is finally getting game breaking bugs fixed after many years of waiting. Hopefully they don't mess it up.
Fallout London sounds cool Bethesda should help them and if it's good enough make it a proper DLC expansion or game. This way people on console can play think it's only for PC due to the size.
Any word on GOTY DLC content being updated too?
@johnK Nearly sure the whole game all dlc included will be updated I'd be shocked if they weren't
I have a feeling a lot of people already playing this on Series X|S and using the FPS Unlock Mod will probably not notice much difference with this update.
@GamingFan4Lyf You don't get any achievement when using mods. Although I'm more interested in the bug fixes.
One of the DLC I gave up on completely, it felt like I was going from one bugged mission straight to the other.
Load times are the most important reason for me....it's the reason I never finished it when it released....load times just killed it for me..made me not want to ever go inside anywhere
@BBB Ultimately your right they don't but it's still a crappy move considering they knew what they were planning I'm sure they would of signed an NDA to keep them happy if Bethesda tryed but pockets need filling and it would of stolen the updates thunder so to speak
@GamingFan4Lyf I stopped playing it a bit after. I also thought it was a mod and you couldn't get achievements. Thats why I stopped
@IssaBrvndo There is the FPS Boost route, but it's limited to the Xbox One resolution only. The FPS Cap Mod was only for those who wanted "4K/60" on Series X - at the cost of no Achievements (should one even cares).
Hopefully, aside from bug fixes, this update does more for visuals than simply implement the FPS Cap Mod.
Yeah Im excited for the 4k 60 and it looks and runs smooth. I never finished 4 when it first came out. So im behind on the times haha.
Looking forward to the update. I would think with the Fallout London Mod they could have just made it exclusive to the old version then work on an update. I'm no programmer though and I don't want to sound like this stuff is easy to do when I have no idea what's required. Hopefully everything works out for them, it seems they put in a lot of time and resources.
I'm going to finally finish the expansions. Very excited.
@StylesT yes yes yes! Flipping load times really hampered the game for me. On that note, New Vegas on Series X is fantastic for that very reason. The load times on 360 were excruciating.
Fallout 4 is great but I'm not sure if I'm going to jump back in yet. I already did a replay of it last year. I will probably continue with 76 and maybe replay 3 since it's been a few years for me on that one.
Very excited if we get some graphic enhancements. Probably not but a person can hope.
Do they update our current game or will this be "new" version? I mean, do I have to earn all of those achievements again?
@Justifier I think it will be just an update. Will fall under the Smart Delivery no doubt
Sounds like a bare minimum update really. It's a shame they weren't planning to give it a major upgrade with improved textures, lighting etc. But this is Bethesda, we should be thankful for anything really. And of course its free, so cannot complain.
Sad when us Xbox fans have an old game and that’s been the biggest thing to look forward so far this year on the console
@Meehanuk_1987 I was thinking about that, but there are some good games coming out. And it's not much better on my PS5.
HURRY UP AND BE 6PM ALREADY!!!
@ChopperCampbell the fallout updates are already out ,7 of them including dlc updates
It is live! Checked on my PS5 and the plus version does not have a free update.
I tried my disc version and I got access to the upgrade. Just FYI for those on PS5
Did the file size drop? It was sitting a 52GB, but on the app now says 36GB. (Series X)
