It's time for the Fallout 4 next-gen update on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S! The update dropped around an hour ago on both consoles, and it clocks in at around 22GB if you're upgrading from the Xbox One version.
Thanks to Bethesda, we have more details on what exactly is included in Fallout 4's next-gen update as well! We already knew about some of the Creation Club stuff, but it's also now it's been confirmed that on the Xbox Series X at least, Quality Mode targets 30FPS at 4K and Performance Mode targets 60FPS at 4K with dynamic resolution scaling.
Additionally, if you're using a display with support for up to 120Hz, the Quality Mode will automatically target 40FPS, and if you're connected to a 1440p display for whatever reason, it'll just run at 1440p, 60FPS as standard.
Update: The Quality Mode appears to be running at 60FPS across both Series X and Series S right now (regardless of what Bethesda says about 30FPS here), and the same goes for the Performance Mode. According to an early report from Digital Foundry, Quality Mode might not be working properly at all on Xbox Series X|S at launch.
If you haven't installed Fallout 4 yet but you've got access to Xbox Game Pass, don't forget that it's playable at no extra charge with the service - simply download it to your console and the game tile should display the "X|S" symbol.
Here are the full patch notes for the Fallout 4 next-gen update on Xbox Series X and S. Keep in mind that some of the notes in here refer to the PC version alone, while others are specific to the "next-gen" console versions.

I like that this has a "lower resolution, higher graphics and higher FPS" mode even if it's weirdly consigned to a weird auto setting.
Sidenote: I would like games that offer different performance modes actually explain/show the difference beyond "game go 60" and "game go pretty" I really don't want to have to dig up comparison videos everytime I load up a game.
Love the inclusion of a 40hz mode for those of us with 120hz VRR screens.
It really is a fantastic middle ground between 30 and 60.
What about the constant crashing in Boston and save corruption bugs. I experienced both of these and they are not in the patch notes.
Guess they did the bare minimum. I will have to try and keep my fingers crossed the game doesn't break again.
@Kooky_Geezer I've finished the game multiple times but only crashed once in Boston area on my 3050 laptop. And I play on high to medium without mods
"When connected to a 120Hz display, Quality mode will target 40 FPS." Perfect!
I wonder if achivements have been fixed, as well.
"*When connected to a 1440p display, the title will run at 1440p resolution at 60 FPS w/ ultra settings regardless of rendering mode"
Kind of dumb that a Balanced Mode option wasn't added that renders the game at 1440p/60 with Ultra settings rather than forcing the system to 1440p to get arguably the best experience over the two selectable options for the game.
So theres more series s consoles out there then series x but where's the spec's doesn't make any sense
@Tonmoy I'm playing on Xbox so probably different on PC.
I've had numerous bugs but the constant crashing in Boston and save corruption bugs (lost a 40+ hour save) were the worse.
Had to give up and never completed a playthrough was hoping for a fix after many years.
@Ricky-Spanish Us Series S people are treated as invisible or insignificant. Which as you point out, makes no sense.
I’ll be sad if we get worse performance because the “fps boost” worked flawlessly for us.
@Kooky_Geezer Oh I do hope the update fixes those issues on Xbox.
What a let down. The update didn't do much to the visuals. I think it may have even looked better before on the Series X with the Auto HDR and FPS Boost!.
Nah I'm not sold. I'm disappointed.. when it comes to the visual upgrade anyway..
if you're connected to a 1440p display for whatever reason, it'll just run at 1440p, 60FPS as standard.
1440p VRR monitor is the best choice for this gen. Crisper image than 1080p and less dynamic resolution scaling with 60 fps and 1080p on a 4k screen.
@InheritNegative Who said that?...
@BBB @Nenoeil I will be interested to hear Digital Foundry's thoughts on the 1440p Mode not being a selectable option in the game rather than having to set the console output to 1440p to do it.
To have the game running 1440p/60/Ultra Settings seems way better than Dynamic 4K/Standard Settings/60fps or 4K/Ultra Settings/30fps.
I swear, I feel like Microsoft really pushes that "4K native resolution" way more than Sony does as plenty of games in Sony's library run 1440p for Perfomance Modes. It was the same problem in the X1X days when resolution for most games was ruled in favor of performance.
So more Xbox gonna Xbox shenanigans
@BBB I was thinking this, myself. Series owners already had this. No wonder social media was hyping this up, I see mostly PS5 owners on there!
Oh this seem as very, very ambitious work from Bethesda. Hope many pepole will enjoy it.
Thomas from Digital Foundry has already tweeted that the performance and Quality modes dont seem to do anything on Xbox and are broken.
Not sure if he jumped the gun or if this is actually true. I certainly cant notice any difference when I toggle the switch, both modes currently run at 60fps.
Downloaded it and checked it out. It looks better but nothing that blew me away. Played it for about 30 minutes and quit, uninstalled. I just thought to myself "Why am I playing this again?" lol.
@Kooky_Geezer It's a Bethesda game. We're lucky to ever get anything fixed. They love to leave majority of the work to the modding community. Really sad.
