Well folks, it's come to our attention that Forza Horizon 2 is a decade old today, so yep, we had to make all of you feel like you're getting on a bit as well. Aye, believe or not, Xbox's second stab at open-world Forza is now 10 years old, and we just want to take a moment to reflect on what's been a rather good decade of racing on Microsoft's platform.
You see, Horizon 2 might look and feel a bit dated in 2024, but this really was where the series started to take off for Team Green. Gone were the constraints of Xbox 360 - developer Playground Games had Xbox One hardware to tap into this time around. And tap into it, they did.
This was the first Forza title to have proper wet weather simulation, and the first Forza game where actual off-road racing was a real fleshed out feature. It also just felt like a real open-world title compared to Forza Horizon, which was more 'open road' with it's fenced off areas and lack of cross country cruising over there in Colorado. We put tens and tens of hours into Horizon 2, and this one is up there with Forza Horizon 3 in how big of a leap it felt for the series.
Another thing worth pointing out is just how much of an influence this game and its feature set had on the genre. Yes, we know, Forza Horizon didn't invent open-world racing, but the structure of the 2nd game in the series — and a bunch of the activities crammed into it — are now genre mainstays. As is the happy, buzzing-to-be-there festival atmosphere in open-world racers these days - for better or for worse on that last point!
We still look back on Forza Horizon 2 as a real highlight for the series, especially when you take the time of its release into consideration. Back then, it really did feel like it was in a league of its own for open-world racing, with older competitors falling out of favour and newer games like The Crew not quite getting it right until much, much later. All of this probably explains why we put so much time into this one back in the day!
Although it's a little scary that we're now a decade on from Forza Horizon 2, we must wish it a happy birthday nonetheless. This is still a really good open-world racer in the context of today, let alone 10 years ago when it shone even brighter. Unfortunately you can no longer buy this game on the Xbox Store or access it via Game Pass, but all of you digital owners and disc users out there might want to hop back on to mark the game's 10th anniversary. Cruising Italy and the south of France is still a heck of a good time today.
Who else has fond memories of FH2? Tell us if you might boot the game back up to celebrate down below!

Twas a good game in it's day I'll give ye that ya wee nipper!
This is still a great game and well worth picking up. Its suprising how much of the later iteration's structure is already in place by this release!
FH 2 did change this genre for the better, but it’s not a good game compared to FH4 for eg which is easily the best game in the Horizon series till this day.
FH4 still has the best track design & best overall quality. FH5 took a drop in quality because of its bigger size meant there’s too much filler. Classic case of quantity over quality.
One Xbox series that has maintained itself as a top AAA over the decades.
Until this day FH5 is the only real Xbox studio quality AAA since the series x release, meta 92.
My favourite is FH4 but I’m UK of course.
All other Xbox Studios including the Bethesda and Activsion studios, take note.
I bought a series X to try out all the Xbox exclusives I had never played. Figured the Halo series would be all I really enjoyed.
Turns out Forza 3-5 were the true gems, and I HATE racing games. Purchase was worth it for those alone.
Forza is simply the World's Most Fun Racing franchise!
Probably my favorite MS exclusive series. I have yet to play 2, don't worry it's in my backlog, but heard nothing but good things about this game.
Nice thing is if you don't own it it's easy to find and cheap too!! To get a physical copy it will cost you less then $20, you just won't be able to get the DLC.
Still love it. Sad they never gave it the 4k60p treatment with backwards compatibility...
Every release of Forza Horizon has been great. Have spent literally hundreds if not over a thousand hours playing these games.
Changed the world and then delisted. Thanks Microsoft.
I still like going back to the game. A total classic. Looks great on the Series S with an xScreen. Forza was the reason I was such a fan of the Xbox One back in the day, there was nothing quite like it anywhere else, even the mainline forza games were in a league of their own that gen, as GT7 basically took the entire generation to release, and I now consider it to be more of a PS5 game than anything.
@sixrings Racing games are notorious for getting delisted on digital storefronts due to licensing issues with all the car manufacturers. Hardly a situation exclusive to Microsoft. You can still play it today by picking up a physical copy if you never bought it anyways.
I loved the map on this. Mountain passes based on france and italy. Awesome. Pity they never bothered to patch it so it's still stuck in 2014 mode, 1080p30. And no PC release like FH3. Playing FH3 in 4k60 is beautiful and enjoyable.
I like all the Horizon's in different ways, (and in some ways the 360 versions are even more impressive given what they are running on!).
For me FH4 is the ultimate, it just hit the sweet spot in tone, location, challenges, polish.
Man, I spent lots of hours playing this; it was one of the games I got my Xbox One for. Yeah, it was superseded by its sequels, but I still prefer it to FH3, it’s a great game.
@GotRedOnMe73 yea I still have my physical copy of this game. It was also one of my first games for my Xbox one.
