So far in August we've had a fairly light month for Xbox Game Pass — Crash Bandicoot aside — but tomorrow marks a major addition to the library in the form of Mafia: Definitive Edition - and I say it's a must play on the service, especially for fans of GTA.
For those of you who aren't aware, this is a modern remake of the original Mafia game; a prohibition era thriller that turns a lowly cab driver into an organised crime maestro. Set in the fictional city of Lost Heaven (which is heavily based on Chicago), Mafia: Definitive Edition has you completing jobs for questionable characters in an open-world environment as you work your way into the Salieri family. Sound familiar?
Part New York-based GTA, part The Godfather, Mafia tells a really gripping and engaging story over its roughly 10-15 hour runtime, and honestly, we can't recommend it enough. Sure, it's not as epic as your average Grand Theft Auto game — most of Mafia's open world is mere set-dressing — but you're getting everything you'd want from a GTA-like title condensed into a more linear format. And it's absolutely gorgeous as well!

To be fair, that open world remark is quite excusable - the original 2002 title wasn't open world at all, this Definitive Edition simply adapts the OG game into a more modern open world style. So, you can cruise around in a plethora of 1930s transport, and the game even has a free roam mode completely separate to the main story, but don't be expecting to go off and do a million side quests here in this Mafia remake.
You know what though, we actually quite like this approach. It does remove a bit of depth from the world, but the game's tight and twisty narrative pulls you in very quickly - and I just wanted to see the storyline through to its conclusion anyway. Also, these days there's just so much to play that it's nice to get a big open playground without loads of additional bloat!
At this point in the series' life this is the best-looking Mafia game as well, just about pipping 2016's Mafia 3. It's amazing to see this era in such minute detail — especially the vehicles and weapons — and four years since its Xbox One launch, it's hardly aged at all. The only real sore spot is 30FPS (come on guys, where's that current-gen patch?) but performance is consistent and manageable here in Mafia: Definitive Edition.
Anyway, this fantastic Mafia title hits Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, August 13, and if you haven't played it yet I highly recommend it. It'll be a part of your subscription anyway, so what do you have to lose?!
Have I convinced you to try out Mafia on Game Pass? Or were you sold already? Tell us if you'll be playing it down below!

I have a slightly self inflicted disappointment with this:
I've played Mafia2 (PS3) & Mafia3 (PS4), and also bought Mafia1 on Series X.
However, when the Gamepass thing was first announced, I misread it as all three being added, and was looking forward to a decent version of 2 (the PS3 version didn't have grass of cloth physics, iirc).
Again, totally on me, but still...😪😂
I actually enjoyed the Mafia series over GTA. I don't know if that's because of the time period or what. Yeah it's not as open as say GTA but that didn't bother me it actually helped keep me focused on the main storyline. I can't wait for Mafia 4.
Looking forward to it. Enjoyed 2 and 3, tried the original when it first came out and didn't get on with it but I'm looking forward to giving it a shot
The first mafia game remake is one on the best games I've ever played hopefully people will give it a go!
I've never played any Mafia games, and the lack of freedom to go anywhere and do anything is a big plus for me. I like a gripping, tight story. Count me in (when I get time to play).
I’m definitely going to give this a go. It looks fantastic.
If you love GTA, but hate all the fun stuff and only like the missions then mafia is for you.
@GotRedOnMe73 it is fantastic so enjoy. It’s absolutely nothing like GTA. At all. Best on PC to be honest as 30fps sucks on console. Real shame. Fantastic game though. Good acting and characters and gorgeous cars and locales.
I played it first when it released on PC, then Xbox and later bought the Definitive Editions on PS5. The first one is a classic imho and probably play it again on XSX since it's not that long.
@x3King84 thank you very much. It is nothing like GTA. By the logic of this article if you like halo and want more , you should check out neon white. Now, if they said, if you like GTA, you should check out the first two watch dogs or if you like GTA you should check out saints Row that would make sense, way more comparable.
I am not sure what version of Mafia you play at Pure Xbox towers but comparing it to GTA is doing Mafia a huge disservice and setting people's expectations in entirely the wrong place.
This being added to Game Pass makes no difference to me since I bought the Trilogy bundle for just £8 in a recent Just for You deal. This is a great addition to the service for those who don’t own game or would like to play through the game again.
When making comparisons to other games in the same genre I’d say Mafia is more akin to L.A Noire, albeit without the crime scenes and interrogations/interviews, rather than GTA.
Now we just need The Godfather (1st game) to go backwards compatible
Not really like GTA as there aren't a lot of reasons to explore (and is chapter based). The OG version on PC is in my top10 of all time and although I am not very keen on the changes these version made it is still a solid entry.
The remake is amazing, one of my favourite games ever.
I cancelled GP a few months back to concentrate on Valhalla and The Order 1886. Really fancy some Mafia action - especially in a tighter world than GTA - so I might sign up for a month or just bite the bullet and get the trilogy for £12 at CD keys.
Mafia is its own game, and its pretty good. It is absolutely not like GTA unless you have never played GTA and inviting that comparison seems pretty silly.....
One bit I will always remember is stealing the racing car mission. That thing handled terribly
I don't think I'll play it cause I already did back in the day, but remember thinking it was a really good game, so go ahead guys and enjoy.
Mafia 2 was also great. Mafia 3 was less great, but despite the reviews I found it quite fun too.
Funny that I had look at this game last week:) Fellt like it was a little to expensive then. Which is like an important reason why I did not buy a copy, not sure if I should reconsider it it now..
Played this together with my friend recently for the first time and absolutely loved it. Pretty cool to see it’s going to be on Game Pass.
I've seen comments again the comparison with GTA, which is reasonable, but also at the same time feel it's not crazy to compare them. Beyond the structure, on a "mission vs mission" comparison, there are reasonable similarities between both. I think it's not crazy to think that people who enjoyed the GTA "campaign" are likely to enjoy Mafia too.
