You've probably seen the news by now - Xbox has decided to delay the upcoming Fable reboot into 2026.
It's a move that doesn't come as much of a surprise to us, especially considering we'd barely seen any gameplay footage of the title until this week, and it's probably for the best considering GTA 6 is still targeting a late 2025 launch.
I'm personally disappointed by the delay, and I think many Xbox fans share the same sentiments, but I'm also keen for Xbox and Playground Games to ensure they deliver an incredible new Fable experience when it arrives next year.
And, looking at the short snippet of new Fable footage that's just been revealed, it certainly seems to be shaping up well! In the video above, you can see some segments of combat, horse riding and cutscenes, and when you consider this is pre-alpha footage, the level of polish seems to be pretty impressive at first glance.
There's still only so much we can take from this video, and here's hoping we get a much more extensive look at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 in a few months' time, but so far, it feels like Playground Games is on the right track with this new Fable. At least, that's how I'm looking at it! It's going to be a long old wait until next year...

That gameplay looks absolutely stunning. I'm voting Feb 2026 - I reckon they'll come out swinging.
My Game Pass Ultimate membership expires first week of March 2026, so Fable will of course release after that 🫠
I predict October 2026. It’s merely in pre-alpha stage so clearly a long way to go yet.
The earlier the better I just want to play it!!
Can I interest you in a spot of chicken kicking sir?
Dev studios/publishers have got to stop announcing games so early.
Edited for clarity.
@Ryu_Niiyama I very much doubt it was Devs that wanted to announce early, studios and Xbox leadership far more likely.
@themightyant when I say devs I am referring to the full studio, leadership as well but I will amend my post.
Edit: done.
They can let it cook til it’s done. I’d rather have a triumphant return of a classic than an ok one that lets the series fizzle out. It’s why I don’t worry so much about Elder Scrolls 6. It’ll come when it’s ready. Besides, there’s some really big titles on the way.
That said, jeez am I ready for release dates for what IS releasing this year. It’s looking like I’ll be able to budget my time ok, but I just want to prep, you know? I don’t want to race through anything to play through anything else. Feels like the year is pacing perfectly, but then I’m just concerned for nine games releasing in September or whatever 2023 did, you know? 😛
@Kaloudz I'm not here to troll you, but that gameplay looked very basic. The graphics look very good, I'll give you that, but those clips look more like tech demos to me than actual gameplay.
As soon as I saw it yesterday, I thought to myself, that game needs a lot more time, and lo and behold, here we are with the year delay.
Yo, that looks amazing! 🤩
Looks nice visually but its to early to make any real comment on gameplay as it showed very little (im not counting the walking / riding).
@Kaloudz
That looked so special.
OMG sausages 🤣
@Steel76 you say that so confidently lol I dunno how about not being in the release window of GTA 6?
Not much to say if it's "pre-alpha" (still pre-alpha?) but I would like the combat to be a little more fast and fluid.
Fable looks like it's going to be one of those generation defining games. I think it's going to be a big win for Xbox no matter when it releases. Delays are part of the business and to be fair I think there is more talk when Xbox do it. It can get quite melodramatic out there. The fact is though, the games are coming and we're in for a strong headstart into whatever generation comes next for Xbox.
@OldGamer999 🤣🤣🤣
@riccyb0y I don't know, it looks pretty decent to me in the snippets we can see. I don't think we will get a deep dive until closer the time - but basing it off looks, the game looks incredible and I've every faith Playground will deliver on all fronts. I don't think you're trolling at all. You're totally allowed an opinion bud ☺️
@Steel76 Agreed.
I think this was the footage Jez cordon was talking about and that was 6 months ago so from then to release it’ll be probably 2 years development so a lot can change
Hate to be that guy, but can we play as a male like in the original games? Seems like they are only ever showing this one character all the time.
I just wish they would announce a Fable collection between now and then.
The pre-alpha looks excellent, definitely ramped up my excitement. Happy to have it whenever it is done. Going to replay the series before the end of the year 👍
I got no hype for this.
Not sure why everybody is so impressed by the current footage. I'm concerned about the gameplay loop. Haven't seen a single dialog interaction, I am not familiar with the Fable game in general but not a lot of RPG elements so far in the trailers.
I prefer games to be delayed if that means giving more time to developers to optimize the game for the release time. We have many examples of failure of AAA games during the release period due to "unfinished" games with many bugs and bad optimization, which does not give a good first impression to the consumers and negatively affects sales. Starfield, Redfall, and Star Wars Outlaws are some of the AAA games that received bad reviews because of bad releases even though most of these games are 7-8 in terms of quality.
I have played the series with male characters and would like to play with men.
lt looks very pretty, not much actual gameplay shown, but with the Witcher 3 talent involved I'm optimistic. But can you create a character, do an evil play through and grow horns, etc. So much is still unknown, but fingers crossed.
Combat doesn't look interesting to me. I was thinking of trying this when it's out, but I lost interest now.
Whilst I have no qualms with a female protagonist, It would be a shame if they’ve taken a more prescribed character route instead of letting you create your own character and narrative.
