We were kinda surprised to see Fable getting a 2025 release window at the Xbox Games Showcase this year, as we haven't really seen much of it yet, but a new report suggests it's in great shape over at Playground Games right now.
Windows Central editor Jez Corden recently revealed on the Xbox Two podcast that he's seen a brief snippet of "Alpha" gameplay from Fable, and he thinks it looks "f**ing fantastic". Here's a bit of what he to say about it:
"I very recently saw some Alpha gameplay footage from Fable. I have no idea when it was from, I don't know if it was earlier in development... but it looked f**ing fantastic."
"You can tell that this game has CD Projekt Red DNA. So, Playground Games, they picked up a bunch of developers from CD Projekt Red, and I believe they picked up the combat designer. And you can kinda tell. I'm not saying it's 100% 1:1 with The Witcher because it's not, but you can kinda tell that the melee combat - the pirouettes and the dodging and the dodge rolling, and the seamless hack-and-slash into an execution which looks really, really cool - all that stuff is there. It looked super polished, super good, and if this was early gameplay then it probably looks even better now."
The overall takeaway is that Jez is extremely excited for Fable after laying eyes on this gameplay, although obviously it's only a snippet of footage and it remains to be seen how the full game will fare. Still, this is a positive start!
We don't have a release date for Fable on Xbox Series X and Series S just yet, and we're assuming it'll arrive in the latter part of 2025 - so probably around the same time GTA 6 comes out. That'll be a headache for Microsoft to figure out...
