It's been a great week for Xbox Game Pass additions, with four big titles making their way onto the service including the likes of the SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom remaster and the surprise addition of 2K's NBA 2K24 on Monday.
Amongst these was a return to Game Pass for Remedy's 2019 action-adventure game Control, which this time arrived in its "Ultimate Edition" variant featuring a graphics upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Now that it's been a few days, we're really interested to know what you think of Control so far! The game received some superb review scores a few years ago, and its huge success has led to plans for a sequel in the future.
But is it that good in your opinion? Let us know in the poll and comments, and if you've already played Control in the past, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the Ultimate Edition and whether it's a justified upgrade or not.

It's even better on a second playthrough at 60fps. The world it inhabits is like the X Files on steroids with a dash of Jedi powers and Twin Peaks. There's even a cigarette smoking man (Trench) for crying out loud. I like the weird collectibles on a 2nd run because I'm not rushing through the story.
Played it long ago. But great game!
i bought dragon's dogma and lost planet 3 just before control came to gp. after i finish one of those then i will jump in control.
I like it, but I'm not entirely sure I'm enjoying it. It's very prone to sudden difficulty spikes.
I tried the original version and, while I enjoyed the story and atmosphere, the gameplay became too difficult for an old casual gamer such as myself (I play games for the story more than for challenges to my aging reflexes) and so I walked away figuring I'd never get to experience the entire story. Seeing the Ultimate version available on Game Pass I figured I'd have another go at it. Thank goodness I did because I discovered plenty of accessibility options were included that have vastly improved the experience for those of us who wish to experience the whole story without undue frustration over gameplay difficulties. Not sure if the accessibility options were in the original, but I'm so glad they are in Ultimate because, now that I've given it a good test run, I'll most likely purchase the game at some point.
Have it downloaded finishing off quantum break first I'll get that sorted tonight and onto basically the sequel control after that but I say I will like it remedy are making top class games for a while now
@Vordus my advice is focus on upgrading launch as quickly as possible. I noticed one mid-game difficulty curve, but once I got multi-launch most things became a bit of a breeze.
Also, there's some really robust accessibility options (like invincibility) which you can turn on without effecting any achievements. Handy for those who just want to focus on the story and such.
Played it already, bored me to tears.
Played it on PS4 and PS5. One of my top 5 games on both systems. Remedy’s best game imo.
Playably it is a great game, although the story is too strange.
Anyway, I think the worst thing was their policy with the new generation, even if you had the Xbox One/PS4 version with the DLCs you had to pay again.
Control is a 10/10. I played it at launch back in 2019 and it would’ve been GotY for me had Death Stranding not landed like the gorgeous albatross it is. Control is most certainly in my top 10 games of the previous generation. On the “Xbox only” ecosystem, I believe the only two games I would rate above it are Red Dead Redemption 2 and Metal Gear Solid V and even there, it gets hard to rank things at that caliber of games. Many days, I’d maybe place Control above V, but my years of being on the Ruse Cruise make it difficult to do in totality.
That said, I can’t wait to see where the franchise goes next. Alan Wake 2 was even better than Control.
Control was weird.
After Quantum Break it just felt like their budget was quartered and aside from raytracing, most things felt like a step backward.
The story was great though.
Really liked it got the platinum on Playstation and rebought it on Xbox love all of Remedy's games but this might be my favourite.
Very rarely play games twice but this one I did. Such a solid
@Lup same
I played the Xbox one version of control and it's dlc and then the ultimate edition and now I can play the pc version with dlc for another achievement stack and I'm looking forward to doing it ,3rd time here we come !!!
I'm about half way through. Really enjoying it. Still confused as hell at was is going on but that is part of why I'm enjoying it. From what played so far I would recommend it.
Played it on PS5 but only got so far before I'd had enough and moved on. I've not wanted to return either so I guess I'll pass on this.
It was Highly Rated but I guess its just not a game or game-play loop I felt compelling enough to keep persevering with from my own personal perspective and does add to the Game Pass content hype...
Fun game but doesn't do much for gamepass. Who hasn't played it at this point? I own it on a few platforms now because it's routinely $5 and was even given away for free on Epic.
It’s a 9.5 but with a ng+ it would be a 10. Favorite Remedy game
Didn't get round to it last time on gamepass but wanted to do deffo be playing at some point especially since the dlc is included too now😎
As a big fan of Quantum Break, I found Control rather lacking. I played it to completion but there wasn't enough enjoyment there to warrant continuing onto the DLC. It's great that Game Pass subscribers get to play it though. It's worth the time, it just wasn't really worth the hype in my opinion.
One of my all time favorites. Everything clicked for me. Personally, I think its a work of genuine genius.
I didn't think much of it, kind of a weird game that didn't do much for me or really make me want to keep playing.
As a Young and the Restless fan I'm interested in trying this game just to see what Sally Spectra is like in it! hehe
It's OK. 100% forgettable. It's not really a full shooter like Halo or Doom or something, but it also isn't really much else either. I played it honestly because the box art looked cool but that was the best thing about it. It's not bad. Just, might as well play something else instead.
I own the game and unfortunately I abandoned it without finishing.
I had problems on understanding the map and I found the whole experience a bit convulsed.
I remember being a bit frustrated.
Said that I genuinely think the game is great and I consider my outcome depending of my faults.
Well, it's a great game that will boost gamepass content, which is already great. XBOX needs to bring more third party story driven titles like Control. It would be a nice idea to aqcuire Remedy Entertaiment, which is a very talented studio that creates quality story driven games. We need more "cinematic games" to compete against Sony.
I don't need the Gamepass to play it, got It months ago already on Disc.
I'm happy to say, I won't support Gamepass anymore from April on in the near future.
As long as it's possible, I will buy games on disc, and sometimes a smaller game digital.
But this subscription crap has to be stopped.
Is it just me that despite there being a map I still get lost a lot? I know I need to start using fast travel more haha
@Nintendo4Sonic dude, are you serious? Can you tell me one reason why you don't support Game Pass? The service has great content, a lot of games to play, with a small price every month. I don't understand why you're so negative about the sub model.
I played through when first came out.
As I did not have much time to play, selected one shot kills. However, I missed a whole conversation because I fired first:( the new accessibility options are good, but playing without for now.
The one thing that I would change is enemy respawning. I don’t normally mind this, but in a game where exploration and backtracking is part of the game, I don’t really enjoy when, having cleared out a room with barely a sliver of life left, I go back through into that area and get swarmed again.
Other than that, weird is good.
massively overrated game good idea but didnt enjoy the combat and the story went nowhere
6/10
Played it when it first dropped on GP, don't remember completing it so giving it another go. I do like it, something else must have come up previously that dragged me away or I got bored of it.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate Because we are supposed to be getting screwed somehow because we don't own the games I guess ha crazy I know
@Ricky-Spanish This is such a naive opinion. Nobody forces you to have a subscription. You can either buy the game or be a sub to gamepass. If you like to own the games, then it's fine. But you don't need to hate gamepass as an alternative option. There many people(like me) who are big supporters of gamepass because it's super value for a casual gamer that he can enjoy a variety of different games without spending a fortune.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate I don't want to offend someone with these words. I grew up with SNES and Gameboy and I still love gaming today and I also see, that Gamepass is a good value.
But also, these subscriptions hurt the market. The same goes with movies and showed already, what it does with physical movies.
It's getting harder and harder to have the favorite movies on disc.
And Gamepass is the start with gaming in the same direction, it's also notable, that Microsoft wouldn't want to support discs anymore if there wouldn't be a smaller part of gamers like me, who still buy discs and want to own games.
I'm just really worried about the future of console gaming.
I played the original version when it was on gamepass before, I honestly don't even remember if I finished it or not if that tells you anything. Game isn't terrible it's just not all that great either. I think their games are overrated. The OG Alan wake and that alan wake nightmare game are the only games I've really liked of theirs. AW2 is boring
@Nintendo4Sonic Whether you like it or not, the subscription model is the future of the entertaiment industry. Music, movies and videogames are all part of the new sub model. As for retails, you don't need them anymore, and companies are losing a lot of money in physical sales compared to digital. Gaming companies can increase their profit margin by going digital only without losing money in the retail market.
I played this on PS5 when it came to PS+ ages ago, really great game, I got the platinum but only completed one of the dlcs. Now helping my daughter through the tougher segments on her Series X!
Control Ultimate edition on my Xbox Series X is on another freaking level, I originally beat control on my PS4 pro but the next gen update REALLY has made the game so much better looking! The atmospheric dread that lurks around the corner and the ever changing house of horrors keeps you on your toes. Control is a fantastic game and the ultimate edition gives me DLC I've never played before so cheers to gamepass ultimate once again knocked it out the park! Long Live Xbox, happy gaming ✌️
I'm enjoying it a lot. I have put on single hit kills and invincibiilty on parts I thought were too tricky as I just want to enjoy the story. And I love that I can do that.
I don't know whether ray tracing or 60fps is better but I like the ray tracing effects so have been playing with that on.
Played the original GP and loved its combat mechanics, which makes playing a game that much playable. Some games have a deep story which can bore me but I press on enjoying the action.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate I agree I love gamepass it's a great deal but some people are odd
@Ricky-Spanish yeah, you're right. Game Pass is the ultimate value service for me. As a PC gamer, I find that it has great content, and it will become even better in the near future, with more third parties and all Activision Blizzard games and all the new first party titles which will come day one. We were waiting for years for a good lineup, and after all these aqcuisitions, now we can finally enjoy the content that we were expecting from the very beginning.
@Phil-Spencer-Gate great. And you're one of these ants who just go with the masses.
Streaming with movies already shows how we get fooled.
@Nintendo4Sonic What do you mean you get fooled? If you like the content on a streaming service, then you pay to enjoy it. If you don't like the content, then you don't pay for subscription. Personally, I have a sub on netflix/disney when I have enough content that I want to watch for at least a month. If I ran out of content, then I cancel my sub on these services and wait for new content- series or movies- that I am really interested.
For me Control did a lot of things, but did none of them well. Also the combat system and the way health worked just left me frustrated.
Alan Wake > Quantum Break > Control
