Alright, it's time to get down to the serious stuff! Starfield has now been available for a few days on Xbox Game Pass and even longer in early access, and we really want to get your initial verdict on Bethesda's epic new RPG.
This is obviously the kind of game that you could play for tens if not hundreds of hours before assigning a final rating, but ultimately we just want to know the score based on what you've played so far - no matter how long that might be!
As you can see in our review above, we gave Starfield an "Excellent" 9/10 rating here at Pure Xbox, praising it as "Bethesda's best RPG to date" and going on to say it's an "enormous space odyssey that serves up some incredibly evocative and engaging exploration, satisfying combat, and a narrative that had us hooked right to the end."
That's just us though, and you might have a different opinion! Do you think it's a 10/10 masterpiece that deserves Game of the Year? Has it been slightly disappointing, sitting around the 7/10 range? Tell us in the poll and comments below!
So, based on what you've played so far, what score would you give Starfield...?

I'd say it's more of a 7.5 for me.
I think it's a couple of QoL patches away from an 8 for me. I'm not a huge Bethesda RPG fan. I think this is the studios best game yet; but it's too overwhelming for me to give it a 10 because I like more focused games.
Even Tears of the Kingdom (which I give a 20/10 - lol) in all it's experimentation and side content was more dialed-in than Starfield (I feel like there is such a thing as too much gameplay freedom).
I think what drives it down half a point (for me) is that there are mechanics and menus and button presses that aren't fully explained that could potentially help. I shouldn't have to look online to find out "Oh, there is an easier way to do [x] with the menu?"
Also, some consumables (like Digipicks) don't have any indication that they aren't just sci-fi environmental objects. There needs to be a discription of stuff that is useful. How was I supposed to know a Digipick was a Futuristic Lockpick?
Button up a little useability type things and I could give it an 8.
Ya don't think the "I told you, I haven't played it yet" option is a little on the passive aggressive side?? 🙄😄
Easy 9/10. I agree some things could be better explained, and it can be a bit menu-heavy, but it's a good game.
7/10 for me but I’ve paused at 15hrs. I’ve tried and tried to not let the 30fps bother me because there’s obviously a great game there but it is actually giving me bloodshot eyes (literally) and headaches. Probably not helped by playing on a big OLED.
Hoping the Digital Foundry video speculating whether a performance mode is possible will inspire Bethesda to add a 40fps mode or 60fpsVRR mode. Either would help me enormously 🙏🤞
So far I would go for a 9 but that could go up or down.
I have figured out things like using the scanner properly to navigate and how to identify which biome you are in for the fauna and how to unlock the planet traits etc.
Still have yet to try the space combat, base and ship building or any of the crafting/research. Maybe il give one a go tonight.
Still need to start the first Constellation mission...
I'd go for 9 out of 10 for the all problems it has loading screen after loading screen no map 30 fps on the xbox anyway I'm still enjoying it I've put about 20 hours in maybe it's going get better or worse I don't know?
I love it, I’m about 20 hours in and it’s a 9/10 for me so far! Could be a 10/10 if it had better menus, better maps, and ran at 60fps.
20 hours in it's a tenner. Very ambitious game. Ten does not equal perfect, there's no such thing.
Right now, an 8/10, but I think it could go up… or down… but it feels like it’s going up, as I’m warming to it the more I play. I’m a long time Bethesda fan and I like the “Bethesda feel” more in this one than in Fallout 4. I like the combat, the dialog, the scenery, characters, and quests so far. I do think it’s easy to just float into the game and get absorbed into it. I really like that space exploration… feels like space exploration.
Now, on the downside, the menus are convoluted and clearly designed for PC before consoles. Now, granted, I do have an eye doctor appointment scheduled for the end of the month, but things are hard to see in the game for me. This isn’t a problem in most other games I’ve played this year or else I’d blame my eye sight. I think the space ship travel is tedious as well. I think I’d have preferred if Bethesda focused on fewer planets and really developed them instead of made 1000s of randomly generated ones. I get the feeling of scope and I get that it’s realistic for there to be a lot of boring space in… space… but this is a game and we play them because they are supposed to prioritize gamers having fun over the realism. And I’m not sure cloned planets are realism anyway. So, yes, the game has that “Bethesda feel,” but it also loses that open world sandbox feeling for the sake of the open galaxy exploration feeling and I’m undecided if I like that half as much. It’s the first Bethesda game where I feel like I need to follow quest lines rather than just wander around, perhaps. The game also doesn’t really start you off so well. It just sort of… starts. It’s like that awkward person at the party that knows how to be a good conversationalist, but doesn’t know how to greet someone, you know?
Where I’m at though, the game continues to grow on me. I’m 11-15 hours in. I feel the desire to play it when I’m not. I’m happy with it, for sure. I doubt that it’ll end up my GotY, but it’ll likely land in my top 10, depending on how great these other September and October releases are. Is it my favorite Bethesda game? No. I can already say it won’t top that feeling I got playing Fallout 3 or Skyrim. Buuuuut, I’m always ok being wrong in a positive way!
Absolutely loving it so far. It is what I expected Starfield to be and is what I wanted it to be. Exploring the universe that Bethesda has created is so enjoyable and catches the feeling I wanted in a space game. The quests and NPCs are really interesting and engaging for me. Can see myself spending many more months playing it!
i HATE that damn robot!
It constantly gets in my way when:
I haven’t binged a game like that in a long time especially single player. I told my buddies 9.8 so I rounded up to ten.
I haven't voted yet but it's either a 6 or 7 for me.
I'm still on the first moon.
I have one flora left to find and I'm not leaving until I do!
One issue I have is that I can't walk the entire damn planet/moon. I have to launch then come back down in a different spot.
@Spider-Kev sounds like you never had a cat….
After 15hours its a 10 from me. A lot of the menu work can be skipped if you know how and tbh. The game is great even if you run through the menus a lot. I haven't found a single thing to complain about. The more I play it. The more I love it.
@AlwaysPlaying
Nope, and I never will.
Dirty, disgusting creatures.
Plus I'm allergic.
7 for me. I’m not big BGS fan though. I’m at 12 hrs but I’ve not had much chance to play it this week due to work being crazy or just not being in the mood.
I’ve spent most of my time playing Slay The Spire and a little Halo Infinite. Easy to pick up and drop games.
I’ve played 10 minutes so can’t judge 😅 damn you BG3.
I gave it a solid 9/10 as overall, it feels, plays and looks 'much' better than any typical Bethesda game and considering their previous game(s), actually exceeded expectations.
I know that its not the 'best' visually and could do with some QoL improvements, but the fact that I also can't stop playing (until I really have to) and then look forward to jumping back in despite those aspects, is why I have had to give it 9/10. Considering the number of Launch games I quit after an hour because they need multiple patches, numerous optimisation passes and/or a major 'overhaul' (Cyberpunk for example), this game is certainly a major leap forward for Bethesda...
Yeah fun (8), but ridiculous learning curve. The Beths should know better!
My 10 hours of play convinced me to stop playing it. The game seems anchored 10 years back. All the flaws of previous Bethesda games plus the loss of the feeling of freedom and exploration. A shame for a game about space. It made me want to play Cyberpunk 2077 again...
Almost done 20hrs.
It’s an 8 for me. It’s never a 10 which is a shame because it had potential to be a mid 90’s game.
It’s solid and fun. But there are a lot of limitations by the engine, loading screens, junk, minor bugs. The no map thing is silly. Trees look plastic and fake like really wrong. AI is dumb AF. You can be in a conversation and your companion will talk in the background. Combat is serviceable. Most of the planets I’ve visited are pretty dull.
I’ve had it crash twice where it just stays on a black loading screen, few screen tears.
But they are all relatively small things, As I’ve said above it’s still fun to play. I just can’t help feeling what it could have been though.

@Spider-Kev Nooo, Vasco? He's the most adorable "character" in the game. Also, you can't walk an entire planet IRL, why should you in the game?
@Cashews You're right. The system has failed.
I have played about 13 hrs and haven't even finished she second story quest yet. Just running factions and doing stuff. Built my first starship just today. Maybe I should play a few main quest missions too.
@Spider-Kev DIRTY? THEY ARE THE ONLY MUTHERTRUCKERS IN PETDOM THAT CLEAN THMESELVES!
It’s 9 for me at the moment but there’s so much to do so that could go up to 10 depending on how I feel after playing for longer. I’m just happy to be able to play it on my Xbox One!
@Amigator
While you can't walk around earth, you can walk around Moon if you so choose to, if you can get there.
Not being able to walk around the whole thing but having to take off, select a new location, land, explore, take off, select a new location, land... many multiple times is a huge pain in the ass!
Not to mention that stuff might get overlooked!
@Cashews
They sit and walk in a box filled with urine and fecal matter.
Then walk away and take it everywhere with them.
They clean themselves... yeah, they lick themselves clean...
Then they go and choke it up somewhere else.
10/10 for me! Im about 25 hours in. I love everything about it.
10/10 and an astonishing achievement. From wandering around New Atlantis I realised that Earth was in the game. Flew there to it being a desert wasteland (very astute) and then landed on the moon, seeing the moon landing flag and all. Decided to visit Mars and was welcomed by an entire underground mining city and community!
If this game isn't a 10/10 because it's overwhelming or not signposted properly, it's because quite simply you're not playing it properly! Treat it like a role playing experience and not a video game with objectives! The difference you'll find is insurmountable.
Voted 10/10; it’s maybe like a 9.5 realistically. About 16/17 hours in. Loving just “playing” it and not worrying about anything else. Very atmospheric and absorbing. Not done too much of the main quest. Not got any of the bugs or issues people have complained about but did just have my first crash at 16hrs but on a mission where there was a LOT exploding around me and I wasn’t helping the situation. Doesn’t matter as I save every like 20 steps for some reason!
@Spider-Kev Sounds to me like you are a dog fanperson!
16 hours in and I give it an 8.5 so far. Nothing egregious for me so far. The highs have been really high in quests, ship combat, loot, combat, and even aspects of exploration. Only thing annoying me so far is some of the tedium with loading and the constellation companions being all on my ass whenever I ask for more money 🙄.
But yeah, still got plenty to go and excited to do it. Wish I had more time to play. Definitely going to be my favorite game of the year most likely.
Being realistic it under achieved my expectations.
Not overall but daft things like frustrating inventory menus systems, no mini map on main planets like new Atlantis.
Such simple things that Bethesda could have done before release.
The game system not the whole game is oldish in a weird way.
So 7.5/10 for me 15 hours in.
I'm enjoying it, just graphics ain't that good as what I would've thought it'd be. As another comment mentioned I've also tried to not let 30 frames bother me but it gives me a damn headache that I have to turn away. Gunplay is amazing and surprisingly the best thing about it. Nevertheless it's great.
Easy 9/10 for me
Imo what loses a point is the whole menus just seems too much is going on especially if you use it to fast travel everywhere but apparently the menus and ship building is so much more nicer on pc but I don't know
I have also been playing for well over 120 hours according to my stats
And i am on my second playthrough, with 15 achievements left
that is only because I am taking my time getting the achievements because once I have the last achievement I won't be playing again till the dlc comes out
got to get my daily reward in
@Spider-Kev wrong again kev. if you have ever heard or seen a cat in a poopbox - they move it all around until it is just right. My catr is so meticulous (it's a Bengal) it only pees on one side and poops on the other.
And it is up to me if they walk around in a urine box! Not the cats! If the person doesn't regularly clean it the cat can do nothing but get in it. That isn't the cats fault it is the fault of the lazy, disgusting, good-for-nothing human. In the wild no cat is walking around in it's own s***.
@Enigk
I don't care for dogs either.
Nor fish.
If I could though, I'd love a wolf or two.
Same with a lion or tiger.
Small animals annoy me! LoL
I'm at LVL9 and 14 hours
There is nothing wrong with 30frames per second.
Anyone who says otherwise doesn't enjoy games and is just a bandwagoner!
@PixelDragon also: I know you have not played Starfield
The chatter around this game is really true. The more hours you put into it, the better it gets as you get comfortable with game systems. First few hours it was a 7, a few more an 8. Now I have done the UC Vanguard mission “Grunt Work” and it has all climbed to a 9 for me. Great mission. Great game.
I have two recommendations to do with what you will:
-I strongly suggest sticking to the main path until completing the mission “Into the Unknown.” It is tempting to wander and explore, but the missions up to that point are good at giving players the basics for exploring fun.
-Seriously: When you are ready to explore, go to New Atlantis and start the UC Vanguard quest line. I have played all the Bethesda games (minus 76), and “Grunt Work” is one of my favorite quests of theirs ever.
@Spider-Kev Sounds to me like you are part of the pet master race lol.
I'd give this game a 10 out of 10 for sheer gaming fun. Great graphics, the best voice acting in a game in quite a while with great expressive facial animations, and you can really get sunk into so many mini games like ship building, lock picking and base building. Those earlier in likely haven't had enough time to gather resources for an Outpost and build up enough credits to make whatever space ship you want, but once you do it can be quite addicting and the more you upgrade, the better resources and equipment you get to take things to the next level. There are a TON of side stories and content so I can do whatever I want on my own schedule and there's also some light romance options to the game and some tough choices to make. I'm over 80 hours in and absolutely hooked. Progressing the story in various quests and now they're all pointing toward Neon so looking forward to diving deeper there and polishing off more quests while exploring the cyber punk landscape. The detail on fabrics and small details with legible text on almost every item are insane. I can look at plants or rocjs or signs on walls or details on buildings and really get lost. It's like Oblivion on 360 with all of the great attention to detail in environments (looking at grass, leaves, trees, rocks, mundane things) and the great physics from trying different things out. Of course there are some issues but the complexity of making a product like this is not lost on me, have you every had issues with basic phone apps? This game has hundreds of systems and the fact they are almost working properly over 95% of the time is not lost on me. Many companies struggle with tech and Bethesda has knocked it out of the park. To me, the sheer amount of content and quality IS game changing for the industry whether people recognize it or not. It has the Bethesda flavor but after spending so much time in week one in game, I'm confident in a 10. The best game of the generation is Elder Ring imo and Star Field is right behind at number 2 (but they are VERY different games from a story telling perspective and they both serve the purpose of their games). So happy single player games are taking the cake this Gen, although else ring does have multiplayer...
In short, looking forward to the rest of the next months and years with this masterpiece. Given Bethesda's record, they will release more content and performance patches so not worried at all about the current launch state which has been superb imo compared to other game launches like Red fall or Battlefield for example. Also the weapons you get past level 25 are killer, no spoilers!
@PixelDragon You played it? Or are you just regurgitating the same crap found in online discourse?
I'm 9 hours in and found the beginning a slow burn. I'd say 8/10 so far. I just wish navigating through the starmap wasn't so cumbersome.
@pip_muzz absolutely agree with that, I'm roleplaying as a Space Scoundrel so just getting immersed in "that character" rather than treat this like a linear give-me-my-ending experience. It's an RPG! Can't expect a quick in and out with games in the genre, it's not an action game you can finish in under 10 hours, you need to lean into the role you wish to follow.
I've been playing a little bit here and there. I have about 15hrs in, I can say with a doubt the game just feels like a 7. The combat just feels like I am playing a ps3 game, it lacks that true fps feel to it when you go first person. In 3rd person it feels solid, I do like the mystery of the story but it is just not hooking me in. 30fps on a OLED is a huge buzz kill. Would like to play this on a computer.
6/10 for me. Just doesn't hit like ES or Fallout games. Being 25 years in development, I guess I was expecting something better.
I have 26 hrs into Starfield and I am loving it I would give it a 9.5/10 right now. The story I love! The exploration and all the small details. Fantastic game
I'm about 20 hours in and I'd give it a 7.5 so far. It does take me back to the first time I played the first Mass Effect and in many ways the bland and lifeless looking planets and moons you land on remind me a lot of that. I think for the most part the overall drab look of the game kind of takes me out of it. Not saying their aren't any good looking areas but the amount of grey at times hurts my eyes. Other than that it is essentially Fallout in space.
@PixelDragon funny thing is, I have never been able to get into any Bethesda games. I tried this because the setting seemed more appealing to me.
The thing that I have found is that I actually agree with all of your criticisms, but am somehow always itching to get back to it.
Bottom line for me is that so many things could, and should, have been done better for a modern game, but yet it is still so engrossing, expansive, and just...fun.
That's a testament of a great game in there. If you can get past some of the superficial issues, there's a really fun game in there with a lot to do.
As a non Bethesda fan, and someone easily bored with new games, this is a huge accomplishment to keep my interest in spite of the many issues I have with it.
TLDR, I have a lot of issues with it, but it still keeps me wanting more and I am just scratching the surface. Haven't really dug into ship or base building much, which is something I will likely enjoy. 8.5 out of 10 for me simply due to the sheer fun I have had.
If it was built to modern standards in every way, including clever ways to disguise load screens to feel seemless, I would give it a 10.
3-5 hour ballpark and I'd give it a 7 so far.
The fiction hasn't grabbed me one bit unfortunately.
The character backgrounds/perks are great.
The music is good but perhaps not as good as Skyrims or Fallouts (could change in a few years when I'm looking back however)
Space travel doesn't really feel exciting to me, especially after No Man's Sky and Outer Wilds.
Combat is solid.
I’m relatively early on (about 10 hours in) and SO FAR probably a 7 or 8. (Voted 8) There’s plenty to love, but there are a lot of small annoyances that add up. E.g.
That said the last few hours have been MUCH better, the writing is good and atmosphere is great. I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface and want to play more. Most reviews say it gets better and better as it goes on. If true it could still be a 9 by the end, but I imagine all the small annoyances will prevent it ever being a 10 for me.
In short a little underwhelmed so far considering how much I’ve loved BGS games.
Its no more than a 5/10 for me. The game simply doesnt deserve the hype. Instead of fallout 4 x 1000 , its more like fallout 4 over a few planets, all of which are incredibly boring to look at, and the fact missions are on other planets is more annoying than amazing. The game talks about exploring, but gives you little to explore, you cant ride a dirt bike in some alien mountain, or gaze upon incredible vistas, or find some secret hidden away. Visually , and thematically its less interesting than the fallout series, which at least had kooky appeal. The main story is fine, but the last mission is a big jump in difficulty with little to no payoff except newgame+ (with the loss of every item youve collected). I encountered a few bugs , the enemy AI is plain awful, the crafting is dull, the ship builder was ok but nothing to get excited about since the module/weapons list is limited. In my view, bg3 destroys starfield on every level and its a shame because the potential for a great game is there, theres just not enough variety, theres nothing truly alien or wondrous, not enough exploration. 5/10 from me, do better Bethesda
Played around 45 to 50 hours of it and cant put it down. Its very addictive. It isnt perfect and wont win game of the year, but we got exactly what they advertised. Havent encountered a single bug or glitch in my game yet. Some minor annoyance s like a missing map in cities and a vehicle on planets would be nice. But it runs stable even on my series s and having a lot of fun. A solid 9 out of 10 for me
@Kilamanjaro no way! I'm a space scoundrel too! The Han Solo link was too hard for me to pass up.
8.5....if you like fallout and Elder scroll you will love this...doesnt reinvent the wheel(fine by me)..defo got that addictiveness to go off and do side quests etc and leave the main story
I haven't been able to put much time in yet, but I'm pleasantly surprised! I'll definitely buy it once the game pass sub lapses in a month. My only real complaint so far, like many others have stated, is the overcomplicated UI/menus.
I am leaning towards the 10. Its not perfect by any means, and I did ponder 9 because of its imperfections, but due to the sheer scope of it, I am leaning towards a 10 due to longevity and immersiveness. They created a new world where I can sink hundreds of hours in and I think that's worth a big score jump. I will need more time before I commit to a 9 or 10.
Also, surprisingly I'm actually quite enjoying the lack of maps. Sure it would have been nice to have, but it's forced me to learn the area and feel more immersed. Reminds me of the game Outward where you didn't have an icon on the map and had to navigate it yourself, which really helped with the immersion
Here it is why it is a 10 for me. I am a huge Penn State football fan. The game started at noon. I have not missed watching or seeing a game ever in my life. I was playing this morning and got lost in the RPG goodness surveying a planet, finding new bases, caves etc. I went to get a shower at 1 PM and realized I completely forgot that Penn State was on. The first time in my life. My comment may seem dramatic but that is how engrossed I am in this game.
Personally, I wasn't enjoying it at all when I first started. I think I put 6-7 hours (maybe idk) into the game and I felt really disconnected from what I felt Starfield was trying to be. I had no issue with performance or the classic charm of a Bethesda bug (or hundreds of bugs), I just felt like I wasn't the target audience, or I was, but It wasn't hitting in the right way. But I stuck with it (mainly for review footage) and after another 5ish hours though... that's when it kicked in. I started to get it. I love the freedom to meander, gallivant or plod about the universe to my heart's content. I could be a space pirate, a smuggler, or simply an average human coffee goer. The role-playing aspect is an absolute joy. If I were to score Starfield after those first 6-7 hours, I'd have settled around a 7 too. Like I get that point of view. But now? If I'm being completely honest, I'd score it somewhere between a 9 and a 10. It was a slow burner for me, but now I've arrived in the land of loving Starfield, I do think it'll creep into a solid 10.
Solid 8.5-9 I'd say.
I played for less than an hour. It's not my type of game, so of course, I didn't get into it. Just thought I'd give it a try.
Voted 8/10 I'm loving the game but the crashes are getting more regular the longer i play it's crashed multiple times every day for the last 3 days there's also far too many loading screens.
9/10 for me. Has a few niggles holding it back from a 10 but despite that its still one of the highlights of this stacked year.
I'm about 18 hours in and I'd be lying if I said I didn't think this was Bethesda's best game. I'm a solid 9.5/10 on this one so far. As someone that has tolerated far more annoying stuff from Bethesda over the years, it's hard for me to really cut this down too many notches, because the annoying aspects were basically within what my expectations already were.
For those complaining about the loading screens, what are you playing it on?
I'm on a Series X. Yes it has loading screens, but they don't last longer than like 5 seconds.
@Dan1283 it could really do with a mini map of sorts in cities ,I mean I cant find shops or somewhere to sleep ,and can I not just wait instead of finding a chair to sit on first.
with the main quesy, 3/10. without the main quest 9/10.
@Spider-Kev the loading screens are dreadful unless you fast travel the right way ,enter a city loading screen, leave city, loading screen, enter ship, loading screen, take off, loading screen, goto planet ,loading screen, land on planet ,loading screen, ridiculous and should be optimised better for series x,if this was a first party game for ps it would get ripped apart ,I love the game, I haven't played anything else since early access, but come on,this is bethesda and ms two massive companies, not some guy in his bedroom.
I'm tracking at an 8.5 right now with about 23 hours invested. From upgrading my character and my ship to what I hear about the main story and some of the side quests, that score could easily increase.
@tallythwack it's a stupid decision to not include a proper map it needs one desperately hopefully one will get patched in soon?
Can't say loading screens have bothered me....and the reason I stopped playing fallout 4 was loading screens. ...this games fine in that regard
I'm falling in love with this silly game. It has terrible inventory management. The lack of Cartography is baffling. I dislike the ground traversal greatly...buuuut...this is a stupidly deep game.
I just ran across a random ship infested with giant bugs. To find the entire crew slaughtered save for the idiot Captain who took the contract for live recovery and had no idea what to do with the bodies of her presumed dead crew...let's just say she took a short walk out the airlock. I've never wanted to Space someone so badly.
9/10- This game is like old lady cross stitching for me. Super relaxing. And I feel like Bilbo Baggins going on a grand adventure...but in space.
Between general annoyance at the menus & the glitches, 7 is as high as I can go right now. I'm still early on, but it's just Fallout 4 in space so far as I've experienced. And I had my fill of Fallout 4 so, IDK if I'll be able to play this more than twice a week instead of wanting to do something else.
9/10 for me. Finished the main quest and on new gane +. Nearly 60 hours in. Some minor quibbles, but it’s a great game.
9/10 for me. Wonderful to go off the beaten path with random encounters that turn into 10 hour side missions and a bunch of activities and once more down the bethedsa rabbit hole.
At first the loading screens etc and lack of mini map were frustrating, but with a little adoption a lot of screens can be by passed and the absence of mini map is a design choice and given the scanner it's not necessarily required. Quick travel complaints I hear, but given the amount of time I'd never walk to destinations in FO or ES it's hardly warranted.
The deeper you go the better it is and while growth is slow it feels adequately scaled with the game to ensure you're not too OP, unless you play on easy.
Only two bugs in 20 hours so a much more stable game than previous games and none of them game breaking. A quick restart fixed them.
One complaint would be compulsory dialogue that makes negative effect on companions travelling with you.
Like a lot of people I'd go for a 9 so far. I'm about 30 hours in and I haven't even got to Akila City or Neon yet so very early in the story! It would be a 10 if the tutorials were stronger, cities had mini maps and there were less load screens/reduced loading times. If the story and NG+ are exceptional I could go up to a 10 or if they are weak down to a 7 or 8.
In the first 20 hours around 7,5- 8 (now 8,5) but the more I play this, the more I enjoy the scale of the game & discover stuff I didn't know was there.
Not matter what the scores are & why they were given, this game has taken over so many people's lives, it's crazy.
About 11 hours in and it’s a ten from me. It’s huge and really getting going now.
6/10 - I gave it a go but the story and setting were not enough for me to put up with 30 fps shooting. You lose so much precision.
@BBB Yes, that's how I found out about them...after I ignored a few during my game time and couldn't find them again because hovering over them didn't give any indication of what they did.
So while it was nice to find out about their function...it was a little late and I could have been collecting them to begin with.
It just would have been nice to have a little blurb about their function right off the bat just like food, healing items, and crafting items rather than finding out about them at the very moment they would have been useful.
I am a bit on the fence after 15h+. The game has been very very buggy in my experience and so far I prefer Skyrim
46 hours. it's a good 7 /10. You don't get the "wow!" effect anymore, since it's a mixture with The outer world / no man sky...
Space fighting is pretty bad (it's not chorus ), the Interface is really bad and the romance is "meh"..
BUT... you play a Bethesda game for the story of course.
I enjoy the side quests !! The big plus with this game, ON XBOX serie X : no freeze or big bugs ! Alleluia ! Bethesda is getting better with day one release. I know it's not the case with the PC version.
A classic A RPG from bethesda but in space. If you liked Fallout, skyrim ,etc; this game is a good one for you.
As an RPG with fair shooting, quests/writing, loading screens everywhere, fair artstyle/graphics to be nasapunk/realistic. It's passable. It has some quality of life areas missing but it's fine. If like Bethesda but on a different scale due to being space and planets then an open world Earth mix of towns/cities of the others.
I'd say it's a 5-6/10.
If your looking for something competing with survival games (than RPGs) or games on a hardware level I mean with the amount of load screens it's not worth it to judge as it doesn't come close at all. Which is the literal only reason I cared about it. I wasn't going to play it. Doesn't mean I can't see what elements have some appeal and others a bit unfortunate. Marketing aside as well.
Honestly Mass Effect/Ratchet Crack in Time I felt have better/more interesting systems (the galaxy maps, the moons to go to, NPCs, the planets as load screens there of course, but also rifts that meant something was part of that game, something Rift Apart can't even do right cough) and space travel and they came out on 7th gen.
Not saying it had to compete with No Man's Sky or other games as much, besides the writing and Bethesda aspects are something people can get over survival games usually not having stories they are gameplay focused games anyways.
But I'd have preferred a key planets to have stories of factions/resistance/whatever other politics or just the key characters going places for whatever reasons kind of game then planets with only some much to do. There is stuff to do but they do feel like you go there to do quests then to just waste your time exploring for much gain. You can get resources and do stuff with it but it's not like a survival game so don't think of it like one just the focus RPGs or shooters with open world RPG focus have.
The ship building and outposts parts are fine but the planets aren't much. The quests are fine, the writing is good but is it the most exciting level design not really.
Nothing wrong with something being grounded but it can be a bit bland at times.
You should treat it like a shooter with some RPG elements doing quests then other RPGs on the market.
It's not game of the year. It's a fair game but I mean I don't play games for writing, I can play anything for that. I play games for gameplay and if the gameplay is middling I don't count it high. I'm just being fair saying it has some fair elements to it. It functions and feels modern enough while still old school Bethesda then other old school modernised games.
It's not perfect. I think Baulder's Gate or others are more interesting for this year. Forza Motorsport isn't going to be appealing to me but people will give it 10s even though seen the decline of the series and found better racing games past or present.
Granted I don't play the big hits of the year but when I see some I go hmm what do they offer regardless of them not being for me and I go yeah they do some fair things I see the appeal still.
I’m about 30 hours in and I’m loving the variety of quests. And while the system took some getting used to, I enjoy that it feels organic. Like my character is actually learning rather than just increasing damage. They also stepped up the interactions with the companion characters such that I feel bad trying to game an outcome with them. The little swath of the galaxy is fun to explore and doesn’t make me sigh in exasperation as I had expected (I don’t like scifi due to my educational background). I will certainly be playing until the new TES game comes out at this rate. That being said it is still a bethesda game. If that team’s world building doesn’t appeal to you I don’t think it will win new fans unless they really like the theme.
I'm about 12 hrs in, I think the initial wonder has worn off, the AI is bad, I went to explore the New Atlantis country side,my god the textures are so bad.Its jarring textures from my ship to the planet. The menus are beyond terrible, good grief they are bad. I'm really disappointed so far.
Bouncing on the moon was a blast!
7/10 right now.
@Spider-Kev, I agree 100% as long as the frame rate is consistent. Bad frame pacing at 30fps is extremely noticeable. Played through cyberpunk at 30fps with no problems, and so far StarField is good. I’ll choose graphics over fps every time for rpg’s or open world games.
Great game just an improvement on fallout 4 and Skyrim not any better than I thought it would be but taught it would be great and it is glad it's on Xbox typical Bethesda RPG game and the shooting is much better than fallout 4
Im now 15 hours in (Im working past my motion sickness issues) and its a great game, if I were scoring it would get 8/10.
There is much to love about this game and I expect to play it for a long time, but there are a lot of issues are also very disspointing to me and stop it being the masterpiece we were hoping for.
As with all bethusda games its the intertwined stories and missions that keep you coming back for more, and spaceship combat and design are also great. Shout out to ID too as the gunplay is a cut above whats normally served up and I suspect thats down to the ID help in this system.
I dont feel like im exploring space much, im exploring little pieces of settlement in space, which is fine once you make the mental adjustment.
The areas which drag it down for me:
Really poor UI design thats almost baffling in many of its design choices and makes a lot of interaction in the game unpleasent. and hard work.
Space travel. Its should feel as fluid as Mass effect, but instead just feels like navigating more poorly designed screens with loading screens. Big shame.
Zero accesabilty options, a big backwards step.
Loading screens. What happened to the ssd?
I hope no one thinks im ragging on the title, I really enjoy it. But theres some obvious jank and poor design choices that stop this game reaching its full potential for me, which is a big shame.
Its still a great title which will go on for years.
9/10. Best game I've played since Cyberpunk 2077.
I'm at 125h now Level 37, I give this game 10/10.
Starfield was never in my Radar, I don't like post apocalyptic setting and space setting in games. Avowed was my most anticipated ip till now for this generation. Yet here we are!
I started as early access playing the game buying the Premium Update 32€.
I had low expectations for this game truly and I was surprised from the outcome!
+
Amazing worlds and gfx, Lighting effects are astonishing!
Amazing Music
Amazing Story line and side quests, fractions quests are near perfect!
Gunplay is dope and low gravity combat is sick!
Unlimited space suits and clothes with sick variety and details in textures, same with guns and all the endless items in the world!
Amazing space combat and ship building is on another level, you can spent ours building your ship!
I like a lot the skill tree and the outcome.
Hi level animations and Physics
Facial animations and NPC's are in very hi level from other BGS games!
Enemy AI is pretty good (playing at hard from the beginning) They constantly change positions so it gets harder to hit them and many times they try to surrounding you, it's not perfect but it's pretty good!
-
Some minor crashes
Companion AI some times doesn't work as expected, in battles companion gets in the line of fire
I have experience only one major Bug till now at Ruyjin faction last mission, waiting for a fix.
I believe the game is on a very Hi polished state and modders will have a very low work to do. Textures are amazing, All the details in Space suits, clothes, guns, items are on a very hi level! UI for me is good with fast travel and shortcuts to go around fast. And all those little details the game trows at you like to hide/show customs and space suit in settlements, selling your items in vendors from the spaceship, space ship cargo and many many more!
I believe it's a masterpiece I really can't put the gamepad down, even at work I'm thinking returning home and continue playing!
7 for sure. I stopped playing it after around the 10 hour mark. It's just not exciting at all. I mean, I'm playing F.E.A.R. right now instead of Starfield. F.E.A.R. came out in 2005.
@Romans12
Damn and that game was terrible back then sucks to be you buddy I'm about 12 hours in still loving it you couldn't pay me to play fear again omg would rather just bounce a ball or something ha
8/10 for me. That might go up with more play time.
I'd have given Skyrim a solid 10/10 back when it was newly released, and Fallout New Vegas (fully patched) 9/10.
I'm hooked, Todd did it again. The scope is ridiculous and the polish really did live up to expectation after the delay. I'd round up to a well earned 10, when I'm not playing Starfield, I'm thinking about Starfield.
10/10 from me. But I am unabashedly a huge fan of Bethesda games. Totally understand it won't be a 10/10 for many. But I am savoring every moment I play, and will be playing this for a very, very long time. After 50 plus hours, I can say it is my favorite Bethesda game, and I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan. It's my favorite game, full stop. Everything I could have hoped for.
Just finished the main story, also completed all of the main faction side stuff. I didn’t do anything with ship building or outposts, but did so some random side quests along the way.
There were large chunks of time where I was having a lot of fun and could understand the addiction people speak of. There were other times where I was very annoyed with things like large amounts of loading screens, bad stealth mission, a ridiculous space fight and individual system hopping to get to my objective.
Overall the game is quite good but not in the elite level of games for me. I’d rate it 7.75.
@ebony-shabba It sucks to be me? How so? Because I don't prefer playing a specific video game that you do? Lol. And according to Metacritic, F.E.A.R. has a score of 88, Starfield has an 85. So, according to Metacritic, SUCKS TO BE YOU! Lol.
About six hours in and I cant give it more than 6/10; it is so weak compared with Skyrim, Oblivion, or Fallout 3. No maps, weak combat, ten years of development and still incredibly glitchy… I have read it gets better and I very much hope so because, right now, its pretty ‘meh’…
I'd say about an 8. It's great, but sterile and kinda lifeless. I was playing Everspace 2 up until Starfield released and it had better space travel, combat, and better starports. The story is awfully weak. My eyes rolled so hard when I found the major Skyrim parallel. And the characters suck. I don't like anyone I've met do far. They are painfully characters instead of people. Met lots of peopley-people in Fallout and TES. None here, except maybe Sona. I'd rank this below Fallout 4, Skyrim, and New Vegas, but better than Oblivion. All that said, I'm 30+ hours in and keep coming back for more. I love how episodic it can be. I can play through an entire quest line in 90 minutes or so and then put it down and go to bed without FOMO.
9/10
A few updates and mods and we could be talking 10/10
Truly a fantastic game, most fun I've had in a long time!
Disappointed with two things. Space exploration which is basically a point&click fast travel simulator. Even with keeping this system it could be handled much better, I mean why I can't click on planet I am seeing in front of me to fast travel there but have to open the map and fast travel from there? I don't see a point in making 700 planets, maybe it would be better to place the game in one solar system with 2 or 3 habitable planets and dozen of moons with stations and similar on others?
Secondly, how locations feel too big, it's almost like it is an MMORPG. New Atlantis looks like a city from MMORPG especially. Think it would serve the game better if they lowered the scale but filled it with more condensed content. It looks like a step backwards similar to the one taken by Bethesda with Oblivion after Morrowind and then corrected by Skyrim. Here they gave us another Oblivion in that matter, too much randomly generated landscapes and areas.
@pip_muzz haha! I'm like a Han Solo but rocking Boba Fett armor 😂
I'm around 80hrs in I think. I'll give it a 7/10. I really like the world building and the cities and little quests are awesome, but the user-unfriendly ship-builder, planetary exploriation, constant quicktravelling and horrible menus are really annoying.
Also I have constant crashing on Series S even with all those workarounds floating around (deleting savegames locally and synch them again worked once for several hours, but not again). Maybe today's patch fixed at least a l'ill bit of that, but tbh I'm too old now for another Fallout 3 oder Skyrim situation on PS3.
