This week marks the arrival of A Minecraft Movie after a long wait, and although many had predicted that it would fare poorly with the critics, quite a few early reviews have actually been very positive for it so far.
Here are some of the reviews and impressions we've spotted for A Minecraft Movie:
Chris Killian (ComicBook)
I'm not a Minecraft player, but I am a Jared Hess guy—and A Minecraft Movie is like a weird, quirky, what-the-hell fever dream. Jack Black is as unhinged as you'd expect, but Jason Momoa is hilarious as a washed-up gamer who takes himself too seriously.
Zach Pope
A Minecraft Movie is destined to be a cult classic just as Napoleon Dynamite & Nacho Libre have become. Jared Hess infuses his zany, weird, over the top, random, stupid, & overall dumb creativeness into Minecraft. It might not be a good movie… but it’s a fun movie.
Chris Gallardo
A Minecraft Movie is INSANELY BONKERS and is 100% what you'd expect in *this* big-screen MINECRAFT movie. Jack Black and Jason Momoa carry the comedy and its Jumanji-esque story. Visuals are perfectly translated and it's got some fun references from the game (and cameos) too!
Patrick Beatty (ABC4)
A Minecraft Movie is Mine-Blowing! Didn’t have the highest expectations but man this is just the kind of movie that people need right now in theaters. Lots of laughs and great performances by Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
A great start, then! Or is it? Not everyone shares the same praise for A Minecraft Movie, with some suggesting that it's as big a disappointment as the Borderlands movie was, and one of the worst films they've seen in ages!
For balance, here are a few early reviews that are critical of A Minecraft Movie so far:
Jasmine Valentine (Dexerto)
A Minecraft Movie is easily the worst movie I have seen in years. Not one iota of it is entertaining aside from Jennifer Coolidge, whose back must be breaking from having to hold up this mess. Appalling storyline and script, if you can call them that.
Jeff Ewing
A Minecraft Movie: A lot of it feels muddled, and it’s unclear what audience it’s actually aiming for. A few jokes really work, but a lot of the humor is crass or doesn’t land. Black and Momoa are clearly having fun, but other characters are given nothing to do.
Jonathan Sim
A Minecraft Movie is the most obnoxious, insufferable video game movie since Borderlands. It desperately wants to be funny and entertaining, but it suffers under bland cinematography and an unfunny script.
It's really hard to know what to make of this right now! I assume it's going to be one of those situations where you either love it or hate it, and it'll be interesting to see how the Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes scores ultimately fare.
Of course, you can make your own mind up when A Minecraft Movie arrives in cinemas across the world this week, with the film actually premiering in certain countries today - and arriving in the likes of the UK and US on April 4th.

Can't wait to watch this with my kids!!
I'm sold. The trailers alone show off the tone of the movie and that alone convinced me. Course, I have to wait for digital release but still, it's on my list!
A must see for me. Jack Black as Steve? Hilarious!
Nothing worse than movie critics...
I'll wait to see what the Nerds think
Why is there a movie called Minecraft?
Didn’t think it looked great from the trailers - but I’m really not it’s demographic. I’m sure the younger minecraft playerbase will get a lot of enjoyment from seeing their favourite game realised on the big screen.
My son is badgering me that he wants to see this ever since the film was announced, so bar a cataclysmic event, we are going to see it on the big screen this weekend.
I’m not a Minecraft fan and the trailers did nothing for me, but my son is really excited to see it and I’m excited to spend the time with him. If nothing else I’ll enjoy the time with him.
