Remember the Minecraft movie that's coming out next year? Warner Bros. has just revealed the first teaser trailer for it, which you can watch up above. Even if you're not interested in the film, we're curious what your thoughts are here!
It feels like this could go either way in terms of whether it's good or not. The animation looks great, the cast features some famous names such as Jason Momoa and Jack Black, and we're loving the use of Beatles music in this trailer. That said, we're already seeing concerns online that suggest going fully animated might have been a better option.
The reality is that it's very early days and we have no idea how this one is going to pan out. Here's hoping it's a lot more reminiscent of the Super Mario Bros. Movie than something like Borderlands... we'll just have to wait and see!
Here's a bit more information about the plot behind the film ahead of its cinema release in April 2025:
"Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world."

It makes Borderlands look like The Shawshank Redemption.
I mostly lurk and don't often comment... But I suddenly felt the need to comment... And I just don't know what to say.
After watching the teaser, I thought that they're pulling a 'Jumanji Movie' genderswap for Mamoa's character. but reading the plot and seeing that he's "The Garbage Man", kinda creepy 1st impression for the Minecraft film. Plus swearing in the line is indeed a choice.
Good lord....
Can we go back to the world where it was "uncool" to be a gamer? Would avoid trash like this being made
Tool bag... didn't know this was used in that way.. this guy is such a tool yes, but.... I wonder if they used Gen AI to generate the script?
@ZeD they could've used this money to overcome their ray tracing and 4k challenges for the game but yeah, guess they need to lose money for once instead of print it
Alright, Didn’t know this was going to be a thing but it’s cringe.
I think it looks funny ha
Well um it's got to be better than Borderlands right, right?
I think it looks a bit goofy but probably a good laugh. Another movie to munch on your popcorn and come away vaguely entertained while not having to think too deeply about the plot.
@RiverGenie ...Or just munch on your popcorn and ignore that there isn't a plot, it's just a bunch of random CGI monstrosities that make you really thankful they've not gone full realism on the actual game.
I think this movie should have the sonic treatment.
Steve was essentially a blocky Tommy Vercetti, so that is a very interesting pick to personify him lol.
Wow, those animals look bad. The visuals in this movie actually look like those old creepypastas of someone playing a SNES "and then Mario fell down the hole and SUPER REALISTIC BLOOD SPRAYED ALL OVER MY SCREEN".
Hopefully this gets the Sonic treatment, because those visuals are uuugggllllyyyy. It looks like a Disney Channel original series parody of what video games are.
...It looks like the CGI in an insurance commercial. (I can keep going.)
The movie should be just Minecraft like the mario and sonic movie's but as soon as jack black appeared it definitely popped the illusion bubble of imagination via dopamine.
The movie industry is hilariously creatively bankrupt to a degree that's staggering.
Got to love the "creatives" that take a brilliant idea and " make it their own" to disastrous results...
@Kilamanjaro obviously its not the same company making the movie and the game, so they couldn't do that
I hope Warner Bros Discovery implodes and takes this movie down with it.
Well I hope Xbox makes more movies and less shows with it’s ip
It’s the worst thing since Minecraft Legends.
@VoidPunk Which means Legends is in the top 3 best (still legally available) Minecraft products available! LEGENDS BROS WE DID IT
@demian brand rights, doesn't matter what company they give the license too in order to produce it, they invest money into it for the brand and profits. They can invest that money into games, books, movies, TV shows, toys etc. If anyone those flop it hurts the brand owner. If Microsoft owns Mojang then it doesn't matter if Warner Bros makes the movie or Apple, the ROI is the most important part of this. If it flops at least they get some marketing to audiences unfamiliar with Minecraft
