Xbox first-party title State of Decay 3 finally reemerged at the Xbox Games Showcase last year for the first time since 2020, and following the event, we started to hear it could perhaps even be targeting a launch at some point in 2025.
That seems unlikely to be the case now though, as Windows Central reporter Jez Corden has suggested it's probably going to arrive in early 2026 instead - in fact, he even says he'd bet money on it arriving next year.
Here's what Jez mentioned during a recent chat on the Xbox Two podcast:
"[Microsoft] were considering State of Decay 3 for 2025 as well, it's closer to being finished than you would think, but I think they are going to let that one slip to 2026. I'd bet money that's a 2026 game - like, early 2026."
It's definitely surprising to us that State of Decay 3 could be in a state to launch this time in 2026, as we've really not seen anywhere near enough from the game to raise our hype levels in recent years.
That said, we're expecting to see more at this year's Xbox Games Showcase in June, and here's hoping we might learn of a release date at the same time. Early 2026 sounds good to us - next year's shaping up well already!

I reckon we see it at the summer showcase for 2026, and Dev Direct 2026 for Q1-2. Man I can't wait for this game.
I really, really, really, want a mode, where I can just play the game with regular shuffling zombies. No special zombies at all.
Be sooooooo much more enjoyable for me.
@GuyinPA75 You didn't like the special zombies? Did you not think they added a sense of uncertainty to the mix? I think just regular zombies would make it too easy - unless they up the difficulty of hordes.
@Kaloudz Good question. I did enjoy special zombies for breaking up the gameplay variety. Absolutely that was nice.
But state of decay, for me at least, the core of that game is be a walking dead simulator. Find people. Incorporate people into your group. Try to keep them alive, etc.
When I watched the walking dead, never had, "Carl! Carl! Watch out for that Vibratior Zombie. She's got fresh D cells leaking battery acid from her....her...you know! Carl! Carl! Carl look out!". 😁
If that makes sense for kind of game I'm going for. If looking for crazy zombie games, other games fill that role, much, much better. Dead Island 2 prefect example how do a special zombie game. They did EVERYTHING right in that game. Especially comparing it to the prior horrible Dead Island games. Hopefully Dead Island 3 just as awesome.
@GuyinPA75 You have a good point. I'm all for special zombies myself, but I agree, some of them are plain stupid. Juggernaut for instance is just a bullet sponge insta-killing slop. I'd certainly be open to the idea of walker-only worlds (assuming SoD 3 has more than one world) but they'd definitely need to make hordes more dangerous.
SoD 2 let's you get by any walker with any vehicle with ease. So I'd definitely like to see more dangers to standard zombies in the sequel. Plague Hearts too. Cool as they are, I feel more variety would be amazing rather than just "kill 5 of these things to escape".
Lmao @ Carl comments. He (in fact all kids in any series) ruins the whole show imo. They're just instantly annoying.
I hope this gets the full AAA Microsoft budget treatment and we get something very cool.
I didn't play much of the other two but I think there is a really good base to both that could be turned into something amazing.
With that said, so far we have seen a cgi trailer of an angry dear and nothing else so can only reserve judgement right now.
I've been a die hard SOD fan since 2015 when I discovered the first game. I am more than ready for SOD3 to come out. When it does, it's going to be something magical.
I love the XBOX community! That's the only place where people respectfully agree to disagree, having great arguments. Awesome thread @kaloudz @GuyinPA75 !!!
About time. I really liked SoD2, never played the first. My biggest hope is the net code is significantly better.
@Misternobody Best way to do it I don't frequent other places (aside from N4G a long time ago - and that was toxic as hell) but I assume there's a lot of scraps elsewhere?
@Jenkinss Man do not bother with the first. Like you I loved SoD2 and wanted more, so I went to SoD 1 and it's absolute pants. The mechanics are trash and the zombies run after you like they're dancing to the YMCA... No joke!
@Kaloudz Also the map for the first one is included in SOD2 so no need to do it. Having said that, I was very fond of the first game before the sequel bested it.
@Dalamar73 It was only "janky" at launch. It has been updated many times and runs smooth
I liked SoD1. SoD2 felt more like a fetch quest, baby sitting, chore sim. SoD3 needs to be more isolated, or smaller group management, temporary tent camps instead of base building, the other survivor groups need not be easily or if ever trusted, and hostile, just moment to moment survival.
@BrandNewOldSchool Ah that much is true, I totally forgot that they added that to the sequel. I do wonder what the third game will be like. Will they have multiple worlds again? Will it be one large world (which I think I'd prefer)? Will there be an in-depth story mode? Etc... I cant wait to find out more!
This game is so far away from the release of the excellent State of Decay 2, is the genre even relevant anymore? Did they grow the audience base? Not holding my breath for this one but will give it a go when it drops on Gamepass assuming it's before my sub runs out in November
@Medic_alert this is like a B franchise at best given the size of the studio & based on their previous work. High quality cut scenes would be welcome to match the graphics from the 2020 trailer
Closer then I think would be anytime this year. So anytime next year is about where I expect it to release.
@Kaloudz N4G just bans anyone who is not a Pony, they keep a few Xbox fanboys there to make it seem like it's not just ponies posting. But it got so bad I stopped using it, it's just a xbox boo his Siny circle perk now, filled with the most uninformed fanboys
@Valhura It really is isn't it? The guy that runs it (Chris) is pure stupid. He attacked someone once for a positive Xbox comment and I called him out on it - got myself a permanent ban...
