It's been a while since the last development update on State of Decay 3, and now, in a new announcement on the game's website, Undead Labs has revealed it's shifting its "focus and resources" to the development of the third game.
"We know you love this world we’ve created and the amazing community you’ve helped build. While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise! Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise, and to do so, we’ll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3."
As part of this, the team has announced the "final content update" for State of Decay 2 will be coming "later this year".
'Update 38' for State of Decay 2 will fix some longstanding issues, implement more QoL improvements, and unlock some previously-gated content like winter outfits and the wizard van. The team has also shared an FAQ addressing State of Decay 2's end of life.
As for the release date of State of Decay 3, Undead Labs says it will have more information to share about this "at a later time". Rumours dating back to July of this year suggest it won't be arriving until at least 2025, which seems like a pretty safe guess at this point.
If we hear any significant updates, we'll let you know.

I like that they are giving 2 one final pass (they've done a lot to it over the years) and unlocking the gated content.
I'll be very suprised is 3 hits before 2026.
I find this a little surprising as I thought their focus HAD been on SoD3 for a while, as it was announced in 2020. I guess this might explain why it’s taken so long. Microsoft really need to STOP announcing so many games 4-5, or more, years before release
@themightyant Microsoft studios need to start announcing games when they actually have games to show. Perfect Dark, Everwild, The Outer Worlds 2, Fable, State of Decay 3 and probably Gears of War E-Day (and I bet there are more I'm forgetting) were all announced way too early. They even made a joke about it in the announcement trailer for TOW2.
@Markatron84 Hellblade 2 also took 4.5 years from announcement. I don't mind them having one or two to look forward to in the longer future but when it's most of your big hitters you have a problem. TOW2 announcement was brilliant though!
@themightyant not strictly a XGS game, but published by XGS, Contraband. Hell, you could even argue that Halo Infinite was announced way, way too early, given they ended up having to delay it by a whole year and it still launched with no Forge or campaign co-op.
@themightyant the issue they had at the time, nothing was close to release. So they had to show further into the future.
But now they have games coming at a steady release hopefully they don’t need to show things so far away.
It doesn't bother me, but it's better to reveal games when they are almost ready because development is longer and more complicated than it used to be. I get the feeling that most of the internet users complaining about any game that is delayed are just being edgy. You can't be impatient about every single game, there are so many games to play and you can't possibly wish for every game to be rushed because it was announced a little too soon, especially if you really care about the game as much as you pretend.
State of Decay 2 was one of those games that launched prematurely and although I didn't expect it, it became one of the best games in recent years. They got most of the gameplay elements right and the graphics and performance became impressive. I hope that 3 is just bigger, better and with less radio communication.
......they're only just now doing this? Didn't they announce this game like 5 years ago?
@themightyant Nintendo usually does this perfectly. Most of the time, big games are announced less than a year before release. Microsoft seems to announce their games right after the pitch meeting 😆
@Banjo- I think that it's different for XGS though, because the games they're announcing are the ones that are supposed to lure people in to the platform. If you're announcing 6 or 7 games that are ostensibly supposed to entice people over to Xbox and people bought into that notion, you're going to piss people off.
Although that might become a moot point over the next few years given the direction Microsoft's strategy seems to be going, that wasn't the case when all these games were initially announced.
@Markatron84 I agree with that, especially at a time when people wanted to know what they were planning because they just had a few studios before that, around the time when Fable 4 was announced. Since Game Pass is their main focus now, the strategy is basically the same, though.
@Banjo- like you said, there's always plenty of stuff to play and there's no point in getting impatient about every new game that's announced or delayed. I imagine, though, that a fair few people who bought a Series X|S off the back of the announcement of any combination of Fable, State of Decay 3, Everwild, Halo Infinite, Perfect Dark, etc, are a bit miffed.
@Markatron84 Yes, that authenticity is easy to identify because they sound genuine and not complaining every day about anything related to Xbox, yet don't even play the games they are complaining about. 😁
@armondo36 No, they have been focused on 3, off course. The last SoD2 updates came from an auxiliary studio: Wushu.
They just are moving some last resources to the next installment. We don't know what kind of resources are those, and we don't know in which phase of development they are.
I enjoyed 1 it was decent 2 is really good I'm excited for 3 even if it was announced to early. like others have mentioned I understand why they needed to announce games earlier. Now I think they need to wait till the last couple of months when fallout 4 was showcased or was released within 6 months I think and that was perfect.
Fable my fave Xbox series was announced way to early. I did enjoy the giant commercial they did that was very fable esc humor.
Would be crazy if the graphics look the same after showing this trailer
@fbnaulin you sure? Because they announced it 5 years ago, all we've seen is 1 trailer that MIGHT have been gameplay and nothing close to a solid release date.
@armondo36 sure. They were using a very small team with trainees and external assistances. Now these trainees have been promoted to tasks in SoD3. It’s that.
Look, Concord took 8 years on the making. State of Decay 3 is on the way to be a real game, it takes time.
Wasn't this game announced 5-6 years ago? And hardly any video or talk about it?
That really has me feeling concerned game is not going along good at all.
