One of the major development teams working on Xbox's Perfect Dark reboot has laid off multiple employees this week, the studio has confirmed on social media.
Crystal Dynamics, the Tomb Raider developer which has also been drafted in to work with Xbox on Perfect Dark, has let go of 17 workers in total. The team goes on to say that "this change does not alter our current project plans".
Here's their full statement:
This morning, Crystal Dynamics made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 17 talented team members. We did not make this decision lightly. Ultimately, this step was necessary to better align our current business needs and the studio’s future success. It is not a reflection of the dedication or ability of those affected.
We recognize how painful this outcome is for those impacted and we are supporting them with transition packages and opportunity outreach.
Crystal Dynamics remains committed to pushing the boundaries of making great games. This change does not alter our current project plans.
At the time of posting, Xbox's main Perfect Dark developer The Initiative hasn't announced any such layoffs, and we're assuming that the two teams are still working to bring the reboot together. Perfect Dark for Xbox Series X|S doesn't have a release date at this stage.
We did finally see the game in action last summer though, and the likes of Digital Foundry came away very impressed by Xbox's showing. If you want to take another look at last year's Perfect Dark footage for a quick refresher, we'll throw a link to that down below.

Not surprised where is there next tomb raider game 🤔 reboot trilogy was amazing imo. Pretty sure this game was announced in 2018 by the Initiative and now it’s 2025 shocking it’s not out yet 😮.
So they aren't even waiting until the game is out the door to layoff developers anymore. Sheesh.
What is rare even working on if they’re outsourcing for perfect dark? 🙄
@jesse_dylan everwild and sot honestly I miss old rare they haven’t made anything good in the last 20 years for Microsoft imo.
@Residentsteven I wasn't into Rare in their Nintendo days even. I always thought the Donkey Kong stuff was highly overrated (except the great soundtracks in DKC). They got lucky with Goldeneye It seems like their older stuff from back when was pretty interesting, though, judging by the Rare retro compilation.
Man, it says a lot when a company like this have to let 17 people go, but I daresay that saves them a good 2/3 of a million a year in wages.
@jesse_dylan donkey kong was my favourite of there’s even banjo kazooie. Loved goldeneye but that’s aged horribly now. Was excited when Microsoft bought them they imo could of been Microsoft’s naughty dog but after over 20 years of waiting I couldn’t care less about rare anymore.
Ugh, waiting for Perfect Dark is such a slog. I wish she wasn't revealed so long ago.
Something I'm really happy about "current" Xbox is that they understand not to show a game to early in development, and even shadow dropping games. Other companies should take notice and do the same (looking at you Metroid Prime 4, and everything Sony).
@Kaloudz
The game pass effect?
@Utena-mobile
Yeah perfect dark is my 2nd most wanted game to play in development
Can you guys go ahead and polish off this game? Greeeeat. Yeah, now I'm gonna need you to clean out your desk and leave.
@TheGiraffe Eh? Crystal Dynamics isn't run by MS. If they've had to let anyone go it will be down to their own output. If they listened to their fans, they'd have remade Soul Reaver. That said, they do have a TR game on the horizon, but the dev time has been insane.
@Kaloudz
I meant spending too much money support game pass game Perfect Dark so had to batten the financial hatches? Just a theory, the Game Pass $ effect
