We're exactly two weeks out from Microsoft's South of Midnight hitting Xbox Game Pass on April 8th, but folks who are keen to play this one ASAP can grab the game early - at a pretty decent price compared to recent releases.
Yep, just like Xbox's biggest games of the last few years, South of Midnight has an early access DLC pack; which would pair up well with an Xbox Game Pass subscription for access to the main game. The South of Midnight 'Premium Upgrade Edition' will set you back £9 / $9 - and it grants players five days early access, alongside some other digital goodies. Keep in mind that the base version is not part of this DLC, hence why it's targeted at Game Pass members.
Here's everything included in the DLC pack:
- 5 Days Early Access
- South of Midnight Artbook
- Original Soundtrack composed by Olivier Deriviere
- The Boo-Hag Comic book by Rob Guillory
- Music Video: Songs & Tales of South of Midnight
- Documentary: Weaving Hazel’s Journey, Director’s Cut
While there's no major story add-on included in these extras, this DLC still seems like a pretty good deal to us, especially when you factor in that generous early access window. For comparison, February's Avowed release also had an early access DLC pack coming in at £17.99 / $22.49 - and that didn't contain a major story DLC either.
Anyway, we're by no means advocating this recent trend of paid early access DLC, but if it's reasonably priced when you factor everything else in, we can't complain too much. South of Midnight's standard edition hits Xbox Game Pass on April 8th - or April 3rd when paired up with this Premium Upgrade DLC.
Excited for this one to come out, folks? Talk to us about SOM and its DLC down below.

Nope. But you do you.
While it is cheaper we're getting ripped off kinda in UK paying same amount of pounds as US does dollars 🤣
@Decimateh Yeah, why is that? I've noticed over the years that we're getting closer to the same £/$ price point, even though they don't have the same values.
On topic of the article, I don't see an issue with this practice. Early access is exactly that, early access. It's not that big a deal and its a practice that's been going on for a long, long time.
I'll patiently wait but I don't think that's a bad deal for what you're getting. If I wasn't preoccupied with other games at the moment, I think I would consider this one.
I think it's a dreadful grift on top of a £180 per year service, but I know people bend over backwards to defend it.
I would never ever pay money to access a game on the real day 1 when I was promised that with my subscription, but I guess we all make our own choices..
£9 may be more reasonable buy I still dislike this faux early access fomo model which has no impact on the final product. If you want to do early access then do it properly like POE2 or BG3 where you get a very substanial portion of the game, for a long period and use the feedback to actually improve the final product.
It should be day 1 (-5) to everyone with the extra just covering the digital goodies if people want to buy them.
This is the most blatant nickel and diming in the industry, and the fact that some defend it is insane.
Edit: talking about the early access garbage not the other stuff. The other bonuses I don't have an issue with.
Being able to play 5 days early means I can play over my weekend off instead of having a much more limited time on tuesday after work. Plus $9 is less than me getting Chipotle or lunch somewhere else.
South of Midnight has been on my radar since being announced in 2023. It looks like Compulsion games is really coming into their own, I very much enjoyed Contrast. Shifting between a 3D world and 2D shadows resulted in a unique gameplay that was fun.
We happy few was on another level, it's unique art style with it's retro futuristic aesthetic, made it stand out amongst its peers. The games 1960s dystopian England was captivating but more than anything it was the games narrative that really shines. Citizens forced to take a happiness drugs really captured my imagination. The idea of society masking it's dark reality with forced joyous optimism created a sense of unease and wonder.
I'm definitely looking forward to jumping into South of midnight day one. It's aesthetic and overall artistic nature looks absolutely stunning and I'm looking forward to exploring the deep souths mythical creatures.
@Kaloudz think they just like ripping us off 🤣 more money for them 😥
@Decimateh Lmao you're probably right :/
I am playing Atomfall right now and for me it was worth the price of admission for early access for that game (probably wont for South of Midnight though.)
Early access is just an option that folks can use or not as they see fit.
Yawn - backlog way too big to even contemplate…

Reminds me of how cheap Recore was.
Perhaps Microsoft doesn't think it will sell that well. Because this game is clearly not meant to sell games.
@xboxjapanfan recore was garbage imo.
Instead of early access, I would prefer a disc release... 😑
