With press now going hands-on with Assassin's Creed Shadows, the folks over at Digital Foundry have had time to pick apart Ubisoft's latest open-world title - and it sounds like an ambitious but mixed experience on Xbox Series X and S.
Let's get to the good news first, shall we? The team offers up a true next-gen experience with the Xbox Series X version - DF says that AC Shadows "marks a sea change from the cross-gen AC titles that came before it".
"Assassin's Creed Shadows marks a series milestone as the first entry developed with a total focus on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It's a bold transition with a clear pay-off in its technology, as last-gen PS4 and Xbox One machines are left behind to ensure the core gameplay incorporates the latest features of Ubisoft's Anvil engine.
That includes ray-traced global illumination, procedural weather simulation and world destruction physics - all exciting additions that help elevate its feudal era Japan setting, in ways not possible in 2023's Assassin's Creed Mirage."
Those Xbox Series X and PS5 versions offer multiple gameplay modes alongside all of this new tech, which we've detailed elsewhere at Pure Xbox if you'd like to see what's on offer. However, Xbox Series S delivers just one 30FPS mode - and it sounds like Microsoft's all-digital console has had to make quite a few cutbacks even for that to work.
"The Series S version presents the least stable 30fps mode. Despite its many cutbacks to RTGI, hair physics and resolution, it's not quite as watertight as you might hope. Frame-rate dips are noticeably more common than on Series X or PS5 in their equivalent 30fps options, with battles and cutscenes being the most frequent cause of disruption as resolution bottoms out at 720p."
The analysis goes on to say that Xbox Series S players "don't truly get the generational leap that Shadows is offering elsewhere", which is a bit of a shame really. Still, we suppose Microsoft's entry-level console exists simply to provide cheaper access to the current-generation - and it's still doing its job in that regard.
Switching back to Series X for a moment, it sounds like the DF team recommends the game's 40FPS mode if you have a 120Hz TV to support it, as it strikes a nice balance between performance and new visual features. Unsurprisingly the PS5 Pro sounds like the place to play the game, if you have that option, which definitely makes me look forward to seeing what Microsoft cook up with their next under the TV (or beside it if it's too big!) console...
Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Having played the last several AC games on the S, I've not had a single issue so far, and this game looks and sounds amazing. Tomorrow can't come quickly enough.
@Fiendish-Beaver It does, if you have that option, but the Series X and base-PS5 are still lovely looking games that perform well.
40fps FTW too.
Absolutely no regrets in selling my Series S and moving up to Series X. I couldn’t live with such deep compromises.
Absolutely agree, @themightyant. Have to say though, that this is the first game that has even remotely tempted me to buy a Pro. If it weren't for the fact that the last game I played on my PS5 was Stellar Blade, which I finished in May last year, I might seriously consider getting a Pro. However, when you only play one game a year on a console (and that game is one that has an ending (so not Live Service)), then any temptation is quickly tempered.
I'm also fortunate enough to have a 120HTZ television, so will be opting for 40FPS when I get round to playing the game. I have the Collector's Edition of the game pre-ordered, but have no idea when that'll be turning up...
@Cakefish Holding out for the Series X was a great decision for me. I went from the Xbox One S to the Series X in 2021 and I've loved my Series X and what it can do. The 65" 4K tv helps too! I just wish it had 120hz capabilities. Still amazing, though.
Feels like there should be an additional mode where you can turn off ray tracing in favour of higher and more stable frame rate.
@FarmDog08 I only had XSS briefly for a few months back in 2021. It was the fact it could only play One S versions and not One X that was more important back then and was the main driving force for my decision. I had no idea how bad the situation would get over the following years, but the current status quo where XSS is more of a 30fps last-generation machine definitely reinforces that it was a wise decision to upgrade when I did. Each to their own, some are very happy with XSS performance and that’s great - it’s certainly not for me though.
@Kaloudz
Same here, man! Already playing from New Zealand! 🤭
It would be nice if UPS would show up early… lol. Anyway, my series x is ready to go!
@Lup I sadly have to wait until tomorrow or I'd have been in NZ with you matey.
That RTGI in quality mode looks too good to ignore. The difference on the DF video is night and day. Series X and quality mode for me.
@Fiendish-Beaver haha - come to the dark side......
I don't blame you for not getting a pro if you so rarely use the platform. For me it's my preferred platform and I've been delighted with the pro, so much so that we will upgrade our 2nd PS5 to a pro model soon as well - Im finally out of debt next month, yey!
However, PS5 and Series X owners still get a great looking game, and I'd suspect %80 of people wouldn't really notice or value the differences. I do though 👍
My PS5 is definitely my secondary console, @Titntin. I only play the occasional exclusive on it. Truthfully, I I've played just 8 games on my PS5, and I got it day one! I've played both Horizon games, both the Last of Us games, both Spiderman games, Returnal and Stellar Blade, and that's my lot. I will be playing the Ghost game, but until then, my PS5 will remain off. Honestly, it really is a waste of money in many regards, but I knew it would be like this because I played about the same number of games on my PS3 and PS4 too. Indeed, I played most of the above games on my PS4 before the PS5 came out, but I'm a sucker for a remaster, and I have a shocking memory, which is why I tend to replay the games that come before the remaster too.
My weakness for liking to have the most current tech is what leads me to think I'll probably buy the Prime even though I have huge reservations about doing so. I know for a fact that I'll be buying the PS6 though...
Wait?!?
Series S has yet another game with performance issues? I'm shocked. Oh my! Say it isn't so.
I really hope Microsoft next gen does not make same mistake of releasing 2 consoles again. Especially with how Series S continues be mistake that should never been released.
@Fiendish-Beaver Yes mate, its all about where you own your games. My Xboxes have all been for GP. Outside of that I've rarely bought a game on the system (I did by FH4 recently though). My wife wont play Xbox and cant stand the controllers, and I own several hundred titles on PS, so it's a no brainer for me.
For this particular game though, having a pro is genuinely transformative as you get RTGI @60hz which is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxzpAluabec
It's a pretty game anyway, and no doubt excellent on the base machines, but that type of lighting increases immersion for me, so I'm happy I made the investment.
I hope everyone enjoys the game!
@Fiendish-Beaver I got into hype and also got the PS5 PRO. After 2 months I sold it. I tested bunch of games and whilst they looked good, I couldn't tell much difference with the base ps5.
Improvements are only noticeable if you sit close to a screen and if you can compare the versions. I play on the couch and has a 85inc TV with all the bells and whistles and yet I realized the improvement is so small and unnoticeable that I would be good with base ps5.
Its very weird feeling like you are trying to see that difference to justify the $700 but I stopped lying to myself and realized its just sony beta-testing PSSR that will be fully cooked in ps6 anyways which is coming soon.
If you mainly play on other platforms and have a base ps5 => there is no need for a PRO imo.
If you play only on PS and want latest and greatest maybe its an option.
Does anyone know whether Game are still sending out the Collector's Edition of Shadows in the UK? I have an email confirming that I pre-ordered it back in June last year, but have heard noting from Game since then. If I go to Bandai's website, the CE link takes me to Game, but the CE isn't shown as being on sale.
I have tried to use the automated Customer Service on Game, but because my order number is so old (they have a new system, apparently) I cannot get an automated response to my query. To top it off, I cannot find a contact number for Customer Services, so I have no idea whether my order still stands, or whether I need to look elsewhere, but then where would I look because Bandai tell me it's only Game.
If anyone has a contact number I'd be grateful...
That is my thinking, @Millionski. I don't really need it, I would just like to have it! Anyway, I have shocking, old persons, eyesight, and despite sitting just 10 feet away from a 70 inch top-notch TV, I don't think I would notice the difference... 🤣
You can't tempt me, @Titntin. I will stay strong...!
I wonder how much it would cost to get my eyesight sorted so that I could actually see the difference... 🤪😂
@Millionski I certainly can't argue with what you can or cannot see, and if I had the experience you describe I would have done the same.
However, to me the differences are clear and very obvious. That's absolutely as a result of 2 decades of technical pipeline development for AAA games, noticing and striving for such improvements were my living. I cannot change the way I see and analyse an image in my head, and to me, the differences are very clear.
I have always stated an upgrade is only worth it if you notice the differences, and I suspect that's maybe only %10 of players at most.
However, with this particular game you would genuinely need to be blind to not see the rtao, it completely changes the presentation.
I'm glad we can all enjoy the experience no matter where we play.
@Fiendish-Beaver I wouldn't bother mate, it would only lead to more expense!

That would be surprising since the best place to play is a PC with a ~4060 Ti or better.
What a surprise... Series S is just a weak system and it gets harder for developers porting their heavy games to that thing.
Buying the Series S is definitely stinginess on the wrong end, besides you only want to play very simple games like Among Us and you're a casual gamer.
I don't know anything about Shadows, but Hogwards Legacy Series X/S version runs well on the series S, but it obvious to me the game is maxing out the system capabilities.
