Unfortunately, we haven't had enough time with Assassin's Creed Shadows to put a definitive score on a review - this is a game with a world that's bigger than Origins, after all - but I've personally been using every spare second to jump in and explore where I can over the past week or so.
What's struck me most in the opening hours is just how much more cinematic, how very dark and atmospheric this 14th (!) main instalment in the franchise feels. Right from the get-go, Ubisoft's incredible depiction of a huge slice of 16th century Japan is a strictly adult one. Fujibayashi Naoe, the awesome young female shinobi who you control in the earlier hours of the tale, is new to murder, and the game wants you to recognise and understand the impact that her first kill has. She doesn't just strike her first victim down and walk away. She feels the shift, embraces revenge, and is an immediately intriguing prospect as a protagonist, thanks to a backstory that doesn't hold back on the grisly murders or grief.
There's a whole lot of Kill Bill, Ghost of Tsushima and Tomb Raider reboot vibes in these opening hours, then. Naoe is sleek and cool to control, she's got bloody murder on her mind, and even the soundtrack hits out in surprising directions in some sequences where you get used to the much-improved core combat against low-level grunts.
In action, I'm not sure I've seen a better-looking game this gen, either. The incredible lighting, mixed with the ridiculous amount of detail on foes as you battle them; the dirt and blood, shining armour than glistens dynamically in the sun, and the changing expression on their faces as they strain to defeat you. Even the actual shadows in this game may be the best I've seen in a console game. Could that be why it's called Assassin's Creed Shadows? No, no it couldn't.
The world itself, in the hours I've played so far, depicts a Japan of dense forests, thick fog, wetlands, mud and danger. Large settlements exist - and are jaw-dropping when you first clap eyes on them - but I've been most wowed by the wilderness. You also can quite keenly feel the push from Ubisoft, to direct players more towards an unguided playstyle in this entry. Switching off unnecessary aids, using scouts to survey areas before moving in, and reading clues rather than following big waypoints are all things that make this franchise a better experience, in my opinion. It works really well in this setting, too, to switch off the guides and get lost in a slice of Japan that's as haunting as it is beautiful.
In terms of combat, Shadows retains the basic layout of previous titles in the series since Assassin's Creed went RPG-lite. You've got a dodge, light and heavy attacks, and two slots to equip weapons. The basics are easy to pick up for series fans, then. But it all feels so much better to actually dig into and play this time around. Much more fluid animations, combined with some incredibly cool sword moves and bow shots, make for fights that are absolutely the most engaging I've seen from AC.
Add in the ability to go prone, use a little reed to breathe in shallow water, and even hook-shot around trees - and this is all before you even start unlocking special moves - and you've got a protagonist who pairs well with a world that's been designed with stealth in mind, I'd say slightly moreso than it does straight-up massive battles. I should note, I've yet to reach the point of switching to Yasuke for an extended period of time, but expect he'll bring much more in the way of melee-based scraps to the table.
There are a few niggles early doors, too. It's not all plain sailing. I'm not sure we needed a world as big as Origins, for starters - I really would love to see these things scaled back and more manageable. A personal gripe. More irksome, however, is the base-building, which this particular writer just curls up into a frozen ball at the prospect of. Please stop putting base-building in every game. Thank you.
Overall though, and those small few niggles aside, this is proving to be an incredibly atmospheric, and deliciously dark slice of Assassin's Creed. I've been very pleasantly surprised, to be quite honest, with how all the little changes across the board add up to make for a game that does feel like a notable advance, after quite a few very samey experiences. The world feels more alive with nature and life than we've seen thus far from the franchise, it's still packed full of the insane levels of historical accuracy and details as the rest of these newer AC titles, and I can see myself keeping at it, even though I'm pretty burnt out on the franchise, just on the strength of how well they've nailed the story, the amazing setting and the immaculate vibes in the opening chapters.
Also, when big Oda Nobunaga picks a fight, when that dirtbag shows up and starts throwing his weight around? We're always up for giving that lad a doing.
Are you picking up Assassin's Creed Shadows this week? Tell us down in the comments below.

I am 1000000% okay with this, given the setting.

Cannot wait. I'm so excited!
Hell yeah, I'm picking it up. I won't be playing anything else.
Perfect setting for me.
A big fan of most of Nobunaga's versions too.
As long as reviewers don’t use the phrase “a return to form for Ubisoft,” then maybe things will be okay.
Awesome! Nice to see good impressions and reviews. I figured it would land about where it has and am buying now!
I look forward to playing this sometime soon. I stopped pre ordering Ubisoft games because the last 3 dropped 50% within 3 months.
Can’t wait though - looks amazing!!
Maybe this could be the one to bring me back to the franchise and ubisoft games in general 🤔
Wow the media will love this DIE game, who saw that coming
@Kaloudz Check out the digital foundry video if you haven't it's certainly one pretty looking game my god!!
@Valhura Why are you so triggered by this game? Just don’t play it when you’ve ill intent, the rest of us can go on enjoying it.
Hello there fellow gamers.
Yeah, I can´t wait to play this on my Series X.
I´ve always wanted to play an AC game in Feudal Japan and it feels like Ubi has done it very well.
It´s gonna be great exploring the beautiful landscapes with Yasuke and the imposing castles very stealthy with Naoe.
Only two more days to go.
Cheers and happy gaming everyone
@RaZieLDaNtE Hope you enjoy it mate by the looks of it I'll have to play it at some point aswell I'm surprised because I haven't been more than uninterested in any assassin's creed game since black flag until this one it looks like a must play so far ✌️👍
@Ricky-Spanish I might just do that. Are there any spoilers in it?
Sounds good thus far.
Judging by the YT reviews thus far, it’s looking like another Marmite game. Was thinking of trying it via Ubisoft+ but not sure I’m feeling it right now. Recently stepped back into Black Flag so that might keep my focus for a while… or it may not…
Is it time yet!? I swear it has been a bit since I have been this excited for an assassin’s creed game as valhalla did absolutely nothing for me. Anyway. Mine just shipped and should arrive on release day. Work is insane so I can’t play until the weekend. Gonna get some snacks, order a pizza and become one with the couch. Been slamming chores after work so I can do nothing this weekend. Between this and xenoblade I should really be set until august or so. Hope that by then ghost of yotei will be out. Will probably cancel gamepass for a few months. (Will have to buy coral island though).
The setting, characters and brotherhood type aspects means this is likely gonna be my favorite modern AC. (1 is still my favorite in the series overall).
Not to knock or compare but I think that this game will better explore themes with Naoe that I wished had been done with the blade twins in rise of the ronin.
Edit: I am so stoked at what sounds like a real return to the option of stealth gameplay. I plan on doing a playthrough as each character but I am looking forward to becoming a deadly shadow with Naoe.
Interesting.
Still not buying it.
Can't wait to play it in 2027, when all the bugs are fixed and the GOTY version is under £20.
Due to the stupid backlog, I defo won't be buying any games this year. Even cancelled UGP it is so ridiculous
Currently playing AC Odyssey again at the moment (determined to finish it and all of its DLC) and loving it. Cannot believe it is 7 years old - it looks brilliant. Mind you, I have a better PC than in 2008....
Then its:
AC Valhalla (if finishing Odyssey)
Legions on PC
Last of us 1 and 2 on PC (again)
Red dead Redemption 1 and 2 on PC
Starfield on XBX
Cyberpunk on XBX
Halo (all of them) on XBX
Star Wars Outlaws on PC
Alien dark descent on PC
etc etc etc ... about 20 others on the list
Then might reinstate UGP for Indiana Jones, Avowed, Atomfall, and whatever else floats my boat.
Might not even live on long enough for Shadows....
@Kaloudz No just gameplay and talking about the effects lighting and graphics looks so good!
@Ricky-Spanish Thanks my man, I'll go and check it out shortly. Are you picking it up?
Really looking forward to playing this!
I know that many people have tried of open worlds with tons to do, but I'm certainly not one of them, and this game will offer most of the things I've always enjoyed about AC in a great setting.
I have a few things to finish first, so not jumping in immediately, but I'm really looking forward to when I do.
I am sooo hyped about this game. Will buy it when i received my salary lol.
@Kaloudz Not on release anyways but it looks very good I haven't been into assassin's creed since black flag.
I might pick up assassin's creed unity though while it's cheap have you played that one I know it's old but the setting has always interested me and I can buy it with reward points for nothing.
Pre-installed, ready to go.
@Rob3008 not triggered by the game at all, I just hate DIE immersion breaking, pandering forced and shoehorned into my entertainment, it's bad enough I have to deal with this crap in the work place or worry about how it will negatively effect my kids in their education and careers, I now cannot escape it in my escapism entertainment.
I have no problem playing as a black protagonist, or any race that is not my own or a female, I have done so many times in many games and will do so again, the difference was those characters were not created to achieve some BS ESG score. But again if this is the future you want for gaming, by all means support it with your hard earned cash
Assassin's Creed lost me when they turned into a BS RPG.
This has nothing to bring me back.
@Ricky-Spanish Hey there friend, thanks.
There is a friend of mine that also stoped playing AC games since AC3, wich he didn´t like that much, but seeing many people, including myself praise AC Origins he decided to give it a go.
And he really enjoyed it. Sometimes, you just have to give certain games a chance.
This is why Gamepass and PS Plus can be so usefull to do exactly that. Try different games and see if you like them.
Let me know if you eventualy get to play it.
Cheers
Brb… off to New Zealand 🙂
@RaZieLDaNtE I will indeed bud thanks for the info I did try odyssey a while back on gamepass but couldn't get into it.
Assassin's creed shadows looks more my type of game i hear most of the RPG ones are very long games I wouldn't be into putting that much time in.
Have you played ac unity I know it's old but I never played that one I might pick that one up.
@Ricky-Spanish The cinematic trailer for Unity is the best trailer ever made, bar none, imo. It's outstanding. Yeah I'm not buying Shadows. I'm gunna pick up Ubisoft Plus Premium tomorrow (£14.99) which includes access to AC Shadows Digital Deluxe. One month should be plenty of time to complete it.
@Kaloudz Down there for dancing!
Smart thinking I'm gonna pick up unity checked up on it sounds like I'll enjoy it and it's basically for free with reward points!
Enjoy shadows mate!!✌️
Not for me and I played ALL the assassins...
I saw the first review from independent journalists: it's the same old , same old.
It's full of FEDEX middle missions, the story is boring and the journalist finished with "ghost of Tsushima did a better AC shadow in the end" . Life is short, with real things to do. Ubisoft ' s model is now VERY old. Maybe it's time to sell this licence to another company? Look at Tomb Raider : Crystal Dynamics refreshed completely the Tomb raider licence!! Time to do something new Ubisoft !!!
@Ricky-Spanish I did played and enjoyed AC Unity.
There is a really good youtube chanel named "The Spaniard" wich have a lot of videos about AC games, but specially Unity wich does have a great time period setting, a compeling main character, a very fun sandbox of how you, the player choose how to take out each target and the BEST parkour system.
That would be my recomendation, to check "The Spaniard" out.
@RaZieLDaNtE Thanks buddy I'll definitely check out his videos on unity tonight before I pick it up looking forward to giving it a go now ha ✌️
As much as I have a soft spot for the AC series…I’ll be waiting at least 6 months to play this like I do with all Ubisoft games in order to get it with a nice discount (tbh I’ll prob wait longer cause I like buying complete editions that include all DLC)
@Ricky-Spanish Unity was great imo. It sure got a lot of hate for its bugs but they're nonexistent now. For the most part at least. Hope you enjoy it brother.
@Valhura yeah, what a bummer the game includes a black person. I mean, black people didn't even exist yet, right?
Please crawl back under your rock.
@Kaloudz I friend requested you on Xbox bud✌️
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Ricky-Spanish Accepted my good man!
Can't wait to play the game! I hope the many people who brought the game enjoy it!
Hyped! Favorite series of the HD era of gaming.
