After hearing about some of the Xbox Series X performance modes in Assassin's Creed Shadows earlier this week, Ubisoft has revealed the game's full console spec sheet - featuring a bonus Series X mode and details on the Xbox Series S version of AC Shadows.
Over on Xbox Series X, we have a 60FPS performance mode, a 30FPS Fidelity mode, and a 40FPS Balanced mode - the latter of which only works with 120Hz displays. Xbox Series S players get just the one 30FPS Fidelity mode at launch.

As you can see in the above chart, all of the Series X gameplay modes are upscaled to 4K in the visual department - and they're likely using dynamic resolution scaling which should hit higher figures if you choose a lower frame rate target. Over on Series S, Microsoft's all-digital console is upscaling its 30FPS Fidelity mode to 1620p - and both consoles get ray tracing support in some form.
After multiple delays that shifted the game out of 2024 entirely, Assassin's Creed Shadows is finally set to release for Xbox on March 20th. The game is set to last roughly 30-40 hours for the main campaign, and is Ubisoft's first current-gen-only release for the Assassin's Creed series.

Say what you want about Ubisoft, but they really understand that people want to choose themselves between Performance and Quality.
This Assassin's Creed Shadow looks great. I recently finished Mirage and really enjoyed it, even though, inevitably, the gameplay mechanics repeat a bit (as they do in most games).
It's not a bad thing that the open worlds are smaller and the story more condensed. I loved Assassin's Creed Odyssey, but it was sometimes a bit too long.
I notice that the PS5 Pro doesn't bring much more to the table apart from slightly better ray tracing, which confirms that this mid-gen upgrade is unnecessary.
Shame we don’t know the base resolutions for each of the six prior to upscaling and the upscaler being used. Makes a massive difference for the upscaler, the higher the base resolution the better to start with.
Probably FSR.
Always go 60fps the most smooth and less blur when panning experience. Never thought much of 40fps balanced, doesn’t improve much on the 30fps panning blur, but 60fps does.
And I have A95L so we not messing about here.
I bet we could get native 4K 60fps on the series x if we took that pain the arse ray tracing out of the equation.
This generation is obviously pushing consoles too hard and really requiring upscalers all the time.
@fatpunkslim “which confirms that this mid-gen upgrade is unnecessary.”
What if you’re upgrading from a PS4/PS4 Pro though, as many millions still game on those consoles. What you call unnecessary, i call choices. It all depends on where you’re upgrading from. The Pro is not solely marketed to current PS5 owners, many haven’t upgraded yet from older consoles.
For example, is the Iphone 16 Pro unnecessary? If you’re upgrading from a 15 Pro maybe, but maybe not if you’re upgrading from an Iphone 11. And even then, is it truly ‘necessary’? Even that is still a perfectly usable phone. I mean, are $1000 phones necessary in the first place? I’d argue not much in the luxury gadget space is actually necessary. People just buy what they want.
I’d bet some PC players would argue that buying a new graphics card and other components to go from 30 to 60 fps and a little more ray tracing or graphical fidelity is important to them. Necessary? Probably not, but people like to spend on their hobbies if they feel it’s worth it.
Also with AC: Shadows, the Pro version apparently offers the base PS5 Fidelity mode with 60fps in stead of 30 fps. Which doesn't seem that marginal. People buy whole new cards or CPUs to get double the frames with the same fidelity. Seems pretty much in line with a small card upgrade or ‘mid gen upgrade’
See the pro in performance mode 60fps gets a little ray trace uptick to standard instead of selective. Might also included a bit more LOD.
Then again depending on the base resolution before pathetic upscaling PSSR can make images a little soft over the ps5 and series x.
Obviously we are pushing these consoles FSR to hard with level of detail and ray tracing and keep requiring lower resolutions with upscaling.
What happened to the good old days of staying within a consoles limit and sticking with a good resolution and no upscaling.
Oh nice looks like "balanced" mode is starting to be a thing. I played Avowed and Fallout 4 in their 40FPS mode and it was great.
@LogicStrikesAgain If you're upgrading from the PS4/PS4 Pro, in terms of value for money, it's better to upgrade to a standard PS5 or an Xbox Series X. Considering the price of the PS5 Pro, the flawed technologies like PSSR, and the minor performance gap, it's not worth it in my opinion!
If your budget is unlimited, go for it! But, even in this case, if you have an unlimited budget and really want the best, then go for a PC instead ! For the same price, you can get a better PC, and if you push a bit further, you'll have a real gaming PC
So, given all of this, yes, I firmly believe that this mid-gen upgrade is totally unnecessary.
@LogicStrikesAgain Was it "necessary" for such a long condescending response to another person's point of view??
Probably not🤗🕺
Really looking forward to this game, looks really great. Will play it on the PS5 pro though, not the Series S (obviously perhaps given the choice, had it been on game pass I would have given the S version a try)
@Ricky-Spanish He confirms this mid gen upgrade is unnecessary, thats not an opinion. I am merely bringing nuance to his statement. But if you don’t like nuance in a debate feel free to think in black and white.
I’m not being condescending, i am being critical, but doing my best in presenting a reasonable and nuanced response and comparison. If i come across as condescending to the poster, i apologize. @fatpunkslim
By the way, no comment here is really necessary, these are all thoughts and reactions from people to the article and each other
@LogicStrikesAgain I think in ebony and ivory sir!!
Living together in perfect harmony!!
And he is just confirming his beliefs that ps5 pro was unnecessary to him it doesn't make what he says fact because obviously you feel the opposite and everyone who bought one does aswell you see what I'm saying??
@fatpunkslim Some people might find it necessary to upgrade from their PS4 and are happy with the different choices they now get to have. Maybe some do want to play AC Shadows with 60fps in fidelity mode.
But you’ve changed your stance in saying you believe it’s unnecessary, which i totally respect. It isn’t for everyone
@Ricky-Spanish If you read his comment correctly he did actually say “which confirms that this mid-gen upgrade is unnecessary.”
In his follow up post he says “I firmly believe”. Which i totally respect
And of course i see what you’re saying, because that was basically what i was arguing
What does his confirmation mean to anyone else but him in reality is what I'm saying I don't think push square will be reporting this one person's thoughts about the ps pro as fact now because he confirmed his opinion because that's all it will ever be at the end of the day like your confirmed opinion is the opposite 🤷
@Ricky-Spanish Dude, i’m just reacting to him, this comment section is about giving opinions. If some people say this upgrade is unnecessary thats fine. But i will bring nuance to it, because some would like to play AC Shadows in fidelity mode with 60fps in stead of 30fps. Lets move one
@LogicStrikesAgain No worries bud 👍 it's all good ✌️
@Ricky-Spanish Hehe, all good bro! 🙏🏼💛
Btw, i appreciate the call out on my tone, i’m trying not to come across as too dismissive. Thanks for keeping it respectful 😉
This will be our ghost of Tsushima
I'm hyped beyond belief for this one. But I don't want to watch any more stuff. We're so close already.
I'm going aa blind as I can.
@LogicStrikesAgain Of course, we're here to give our opinion. We can try to argue to make our point understood and possibly convince those who have reasonable doubts. I'm capable of changing my mind if I see that the arguments are relevant, but in this case, I remain convinced of my opinion, just as you remain convinced of yours, despite my arguments apparently not being sufficient. It remains a cordial discussion, and I respect that. Everything's good, bro!
Got my “you better have my money” email from GameStop today. Can’t wait!
In my opinion overall that Pro really ain’t worth the dough.
Then Sony stitched us up, adding another 1tb memory ssd to make you pay an extra £100.
When the pro could have been £600 not £700 which sounds a little better in the pocket.
Then took the hard drive away claiming to give you choice.
Well why not leave the memory at 1tb and also give the choice to upgrade if you wish later.
It was a terrible kiss my arse corporate greed and lies.

You can't deny Ubisoft optimise console games well. One of the few developers that gets Raytracing on the Series S.
I’m not gonna lie as much as I dislike modern day Ubisoft I do have a soft spot for the AC series…also more games should offer 40 FPS balanced mode it’s a good middle ground
@LogicStrikesAgain It's all good mate 👍 respectful is the way to be we are all just here because we enjoy Xbox and sometimes it's good to call someone out on something that you don't agree with your a good dude hope you have a enjoyable gaming weekend and overall of course 🙆👏✌️
That's absolutely fine by me! Not long to go now! Do we know when the embargoes lift for this game?
@OldGamer999 yeah I wish I could make more use of 40fps modes, but even though it is literally half way between 30 and 60 my eyes don’t perceive it that way and to me it looks closer to 30fps (or maybe more accurate to say it doesn’t cross the threshold for what I would call smooth motion). I always go for 60fps targets for that reason.
@Cakefish
We must have the same eye set, 40fps really doesn’t do it for me either.
Then switch to 60fps and my eyes are in heaven 🤣
The Series S is truly a disappointment. It was promised to do everything the Series X could, just at a lower resolution. But time and time again, we only get 30 FPS modes. It’s a disaster for developers and a burden to consider, as it holds back both the Series X and PS5 when games have to accommodate the Series S. I never understood the point of the Series S from the start…
@BossBE I can only see two valid reasons: most affordable current-gen console (albeit with lots of visual compromises) and being primarily a GP machine.
Have seen the improved gameplay, this game looks amazing!! Day one for me. Deserves every penny.
I'm buying it. But can't afford to buy it at launch. So will wait a while before buying it.
