There's been a lot of debate around Black Myth: Wukong and exactly why it's failed to arrive on Xbox consoles almost a year since it was first delayed - and certain Xbox fans still believe it's got something to do with Sony.
We did hear from the game's director in January who suggested the Xbox Series S was to blame, but Microsoft has confused things in the past by stating "the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us".
So, what about this new comment from Sony? Basically, in an interview with Phil Rosenberg (SVP of Global Partner Development and Relations at Sony Interactive Entertainment), he namedrops Black Myth: Wukong as a game that Sony has given support to. He doesn't say anything about exclusivity, but people are drawing their own conclusions.
SIE.blog: How does your team work together to identify great new franchises and titles? There are so many great games that come from seemingly out of nowhere. What’s in the “secret sauce” to make successful IP happen?
We have for instance in GPDR, the Content Ventures team led by Christian Svensson. There’s nobody better in the world than Christian and Shawne Benson at finding hidden gems and nurturing up-and-coming companies that are probably off the radar for most of us. They get tons of support from the third-party account management team and the partner development team, who are often the very first points of contact.
[This team worked with] Annapurna Games very early on games like Stray. The same approach also led our support of Genshin Impact, Black Myth: Wukong and Stellar Blade for example.
That's what he said, and now here's a sample of the reaction we've spotted online:
There are a lot of people summing up the situation on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and beyond, but ultimately nobody knows for sure - as one person mentioned, it might even be a combination of multiple things.
Does it even matter at this point though? All I want to see is Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as soon as possible. I trust the developer when they say the Xbox Series S version is holding a port back (even despite Microsoft's strange comments about it), and here's hoping we'll finally see it within the next few months.
Any thoughts on this situation, or are you as fed up as us about it now? Comment down below!

And what’s the controversy exactly?
Sony helped the team to get the game running on PS5, as they’ve done with other games, exclusive and non-exclusive.
If the game isn’t on Xbox it’s because devs are having a hard time downscaling the game to a Series S, they themselves have said as much. This is such a nothing burger.
Black Myth: Wukong don't introduce something special, played on ps5 of my coworker. Last time we played Lies of p on my xbox, now he is playing with shield build on ng+2 on his ps5
My problem with this theory that Sony had some secret deal has always been - why is it secret?
I can't think of a single other time there has been a secret exclusivity deal, in fact usually part of going into these deals is to shout them from the roof tops.
The only thing that would change that would be if there is something dodgy going on i.e. the dev is effectively breaking their agreement with Xbox, with the implication that Sony have paid them to do so.
But that's a pretty serious allegation and one there is no evidence of.
@Medic_alert I don't think there's an exclusivity deal - they probably just realised the Series S version was struggling and decided to lean into the PS5 release instead.
Maybe. I don't know. Who cares 😅 I just want the game on Xbox!
I just hope with the next "most powerful console ever" they don't shoot it in the leg with a weaker variant that holds it back. Series S has been great for Xbox growth & casual gamers being the most sold console of the two but it's also made getting the more expensive version a little bit moot, I benefit from 4k and 120fps but it's on just a handful of titles. If I get another Xbox at all it'll be their cheapest version, no more huge spend for something they hardly support. Still wanna build a PC since Microsoft is moving everything over there anyway
@FraserG I don't think so either. It would be very weird if it turns out there was something underhand going on in the background.
The main reason Sony have games like Genshin Impact and Black Myth Wukong on PlayStation is that they were pro-active about going over to China and courting devs years ago and supporting them to get their games onto their platform.
It doesn't help that Xbox has virtually no footprint in China, but Xbox needs to do better.
@Kaelliellie Okay.
I’m sure other XBox owners would like to find that out for themselves though, regardless of what your opinion of the game is and what other games someone else is currently playing.
Does it even matter at this point though?
Well you know....just, #&@# it at this point.
How about Shenmue III though, I really wish to finish the trilogy on Xbox 😁.
Edit: As inconsequential as my opinion is, I totally believe there is nothing fishy going on here, nothing at all 😉😉...
@Sol4ris
"Finish" is a strong word. 😭
I'd be more excited for a Dave the Diver release
@M20B25 Dave the Diver deserves a release on EVERY platform for sure!
Game is mediocre/good at best (I played it on PS5 PRO for good 15hrs and dropped). More like 8/10.
I wouldnt lose sleep if I couldn't play it.
@Millionski
More like 8/10.
That's hardly a mediocre/ good at best rating, though 😉.
@Millionski Honestly I didn’t like it either and found it immensely overhyped, good thing that I got it on disc so I can sell it later.
Non issue … if it comes to Xbox or not … not a big deal except we would all like to play all the games day 1.
"All I want to see is Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as soon as possible" No, absolutely not !
No need for a game from a small studio that lied. So many games to play on Xbox and via GamePass, I have to finish Stalker 2, Avowed and Atomfall already then will follow South of Midnight, expedition 33, Doom Dark Ages, I am playing 33 Immortals, and Towerborne at the same time. So much games, much more interessting that this overhyped game
@fatpunkslim Call me crazy, but I believe small studio that said something similar to Larian Studios regarding BG3 and the series S more than massive faceless corporation trying to cover itself and its lower-powered console they demand all games also support.
Sony helping a team to get the game running on there system is suspicious? Lmfao 😂. So why isn't the Callisto protocol exclusive then? And so many other games Sony helped working on? Stupid discussion...
I tried the demo on my PS5 and the dialoug and voice acting was so painful I didn't make it through the Demo
I agree with Digital Foundry that some sort of agreement was made, just not a typical one.
For the most part exclusive game deals from third party developers are usually time limited and they bar the developer from releasing the game on a rival console. After the lock in time that is were it gets murky. Often there are hidden sales numbers that if they exceed them they might pay the developer and that might not be in the contract. The console developer might also agree sometimes to keep paying to keep the game on there console only, no payment developer is free to release for other consoles. Then there is the most tricky issue is were the console has bought the IP from the developer and they now have complete control over the game now and in the future. Then of course you have developers who simply decide on only releasing games on the console platforms they want to.
This is a non story, we already knew Sony helped them get the game running on PS5. If there was a exclusivity deal Sony would have Sindel shouted it into our brains just like they do with every other exclusive deal they make.
As much as I’ll be happy to see my Xbox friends get to play it, I already caved and bought it for PS5 over the summer and thoroughly enjoyed it..I will say that I do think Microsoft needs to drop the parity clause and allow certain games to release on the X if all avenues have been exhausted trying to get it to work on the S
Doesn't really bother me all that much, and as far as I know, MS already said it wasn't a hardware issue... I'd side with them over a dev that's been relatively quiet on the matter.
Either way, it's not up my alley and there's far too many things on the horizon for me to get eaten up over not being able to play this.
There was a deal. It's what Sony always does as a tactic. Deals with third party devs for exclusivity / timed exclusivity, especially to block them on Xbox, which they see them as direct competitor and Switch not. Try to not be surprised if the game releases on Xbox on 20th of August 2025, exactly one year after its release on PS5/PC. Also, try not to be surprised if the new Xbox supports multiple storefronts (also Steam), that they will try also to block their games on it through Steam (it's another topic if they will succeed in this case)
@Kaloudz To be fair the dev has not been quiet on the issue and they gave a very definitive answer that it was a memory issue because the SS has a very small memory pool (10GB) compared to other platforms. People love to mention the Steam Deck as a counter point, but like the SX and the PS5 its running 16GB, and the game still doesn't run great on PS, Deck or PC either.
Not bashing the SS as its a great little machine but there is no denying that the lower memory has caused some issues for devs.
@IOI it's running on steam deck which is an even weaker machine... And no, before you come up with the usual excuse, steam deck doesn't have more RAM because it's also using RAM memory for VRAM. BMW can't run with the base VRAM steam deck has.
@Ilyn Ah right thanks bud I must have missed that. So perhaps it's parity clause that's the issue? God knows but either way it's not for me personally. The whole planet of the apes look just doesn't get me going.
@GeorgeKal The steam deck does use unified RAM but a lot of people are playing BMW at low resolutions like 640p with up to 60% FSR in order to lower the VRAM requirements. The scalabilty of PC settings simply allowed for crowdsourced settings to make the game "Playable" despite it not being officially compatible.
Also as the game is not offically supported on SD it has no QC, infact SD has no QC at all as games are not made to specifically target the platform. That would not be the case for the SS version as it would be expected to perform at 1080 / 30fps as a minimum or you would have another Cyberpunk situation.
@Ilyn many re playing at 640p but not everyone so that says nothing. Also who is stopping them from having lower resolution on series s? Nobody... Not to mention that CPU and GPU are way more important aspects and Series S is more powerful on both areas. If they wanted to they could easily make the game run on series s. It's not even a big deal that they made a deal with sony, not the first or last 3rd party exclusive. The problem is they don't confirm that it's an exclusive so they can keep saying their bs about series s
I deeply believe $ony-buy-exclusive from start. No need he say.
