In recent months, we've seen that Ubisoft is still seeking investment from somewhere as it wrangles with game delays and general management difficulties - and a new bit of information has come to light today that suggests Microsoft has held discussions with the company over the future of its gaming IP.
In an article shared by IGN, one disgruntled Ubisoft shareholder has started spilling some information about what's going on over there right now. Juraj Krúpa, CEO of AJ Investments (the shareholder in question), claims that the Assassin's Creed maker failed to disclose "discussions between Microsoft, EA, and others that are interested in acquiring IPs from Ubisoft".
Krúpa apparently mentioned that these discussions were shared in "a restricted article published by business investment platform MergerMarket", and that neither Ubisoft investors nor the public were informed of them by the French game maker.
In its defense, Ubisoft has shared a statement with IGN as part of today's article - a statement that's filled with plenty of business jargon; the sort of language that makes your brain melt when reading it. Anyway, from what we can parse, Ubisoft is basically saying that it's exploring different options for the future of its IP - and we'll only find out more if and when any of those options turns into an actual deal.
"As we mentioned during our Q3 sales, the review of various transformational strategic and capitalistic options is ongoing. The Board has established an ad-hoc independent Committee to oversee this formal and competitive process, so as to extract the best value from Ubisoft’s assets and franchises for all stakeholders. Ubisoft will inform the market in accordance with applicable regulations if and once a transaction materialises."
Unfortunately, there's no hints as to which IP Microsoft (or EA for that matter) is interested in acquiring from the company, but it's safe to say that Ubisoft's asking price would probably factor heavily. The team has lots of lucrative game series under its belt - game series that the likes of Xbox and EA would be glad to scoop up at the right price.

Rayman please.
I'm not sure I want that. Microsoft already have enough IP. What are they going to do, get Bethesda to work on an Assassin's Creed RPG, what does that do to their own IP? Push them all back? No thanks.
@species8472 Rumour is most of the PoP: Lost Crown team are working on Rayman, if true that's awesome.
I just want new remaster of Far Cry Instincts.
Edit: I'm dreading Push Square posting their own article. The comments are going to be a ***** show.
If AC Shadows isn’t a gigantic hit that somehow digs out Ubisoft from the ground (90% chance that even if successful it won’t be enough) there’s a good chance this ends up happening as no company wants to buy Ubisoft as a whole.
For what is worth I wouldn’t like it either way as both Microsoft and EA have more than enough IPs in their graveyard already…
Nintendo should buy Beyond Good & Evil and make the straightforward Zelda-like sequel it should have always been. Oh and Rayman too. Cuz platformers
The best thing that could happen for the AC IP is for another company to take the reigns and divorce it from ALL of the current management.
Shadows is (whether you agree with the reasons or not) so tainted in many folks’ eyes that even if it breaks even (which it may not, given delays and Ubisoft continually Ubisofting) it won’t do much for the compaly’s bottom line at this point.
@RZ-Atom You'd think they wouldn't care now that Team Green's porting everything to PS & Switch 2, but bruh, those comments have such massive hate boners for anything Microsoft it's childish.
Ubisoft's IPs are worth more than the company while costing less, which is why you hear companies talking about wanting to buy the IPs and not Ubisoft itself. I don't really care who gets Assassin's Creed as long as they change it back to what it used to be, instead of another generic Open World grind game. Rayman would be a good fit for Nintendo, because every game could be the wackiness of Mario Wonder and more difficult than Donkey Kong making it stand out from their other Platformers.
I'd be more than happy if they nabbed Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, Rayman, or Splinter Cell.
@UnusedBabyWipes I worked 18 years, 2003-2011, at EBGames Canada and you would not, well you probably would, believe how toxic the PlayStation user base was compared to every other player base combined.
When kids-adults would ask me what I thought was better I always said "As long as you're having fun, that's all that maters." When they followed up asking what I was playing right now I would normally answer with the 'Sword of the Berserk; Guts Rage' on Dreamcast, because come 'on it's Berserk.
PlayStation fans are only happy when others fan groups are miserable.

There are a ton of great IP under ubisoft and they are likely going to be laser focused on assassins creed and to a lesser extent far cry until better times return.
Its improbable but I would like to see them wrestle the Tom Clancy rights away from Ubisoft.
Prince of persia seems like a redundant IP for them too. Any potential new prince of persia game could easily be rebranded as assassins creed and probably sell better.
Realistically they probably won't get any IP or it will be smaller stuff like child of light or something.
Ubisoft aren’t going to give up their Crown Jewels (Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry). And I struggle to see Xbox being the saviour of say… Beyond Good & Evil, Child of Light, Rayman when they apparently don’t think Banjo-Kazooie is worth pursuing and when they already have Crash Bandicoot and Spyro to work with.
@themightyant I doubt Ubisoft would sell Assassin Creed, but a Rainbow Six game made by one of the billion CoD studios that Microsoft owns would be interesting… or maybe buy splinter cell and let a 3rd party company on the IP.
Imagine a new splinter cell game made by one of the activision teams
@RZ-Atom Sword of the Berserk; Guts Rage
That's a great game. The fountains of blood in that (for its time) was epic. That, Nightmare Creatures, Hunter the Reckoning, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are games I would love NightDive or Aspyr to bring back to life.
I would love if Xbox bought Beyond Good and Evil and then completely erased the second game from existence, while working on rebooting the series. But I don't think it will ever happen.
EA probably want The Crew. They have a habit of shutting down racers. I could also see them picking up Assassins Creed & turning it into a live service.
Microsoft picking up Far Cry & letting Bethesda loose on it to turn it into a tropical Fallout, then also the Tom Clancy series & letting Activision Codify it.
But the one I really want is Microsoft to take Driver and give it Turn 10 or Playground. Remasters of the first two & also San Fran.
The only IP I would be interested in MS getting from Ubisoft would be the Heroes of Might and Magic IP. I think it would fit in with MS perfectly they could even maybe give it to Blizzard to work make a new one.
Honestly the moment the IPs change hands is the moment I stop caring about them.
Prince of Persia plz.
@themightyant I think we need another Rayman, it's been long enough.
Child of Light.
A man can dream.
While Rayman/Rabbids are a nice & easy pick, my pipe dream is that Xbox nabs the Grow games. Port Grow Home and make a 3rd entry.
Hopefully if they do buy any IP's off them they get rid ubisoft blandness from the games I couldn't be arsed either way if they buy them or not🤷
@species8472 I agree I want a new Rayman, as I said there’s already one reportedly in development at Ubisoft
@themightyant I did not know, that's good to hear.
@species8472 here’s an IGN article about it, which was a follow up to rumours the Prince of Persia: Lost Crown team were working on it. Fingers crossed.
@species8472 a new Rayman on Game Pass day 1 would be amazing
Microsoft doesn’t want to buy any company as it would trigger more antitrust issues. They could buy a IP though or sign a deal to allow all Ubi games onto game pass…
I don't see Ubisoft selling the Tom Clancy name, or Assassins Creed. Far Cry is a MAYBE. My blood would run cold if they bought Rayman just to chokeslam him right into the dusty storage bin next to Crash, Spyro, and Banjo. Prince of Persia is a maybe... but why would Microsoft want that? Call of Juarez, Driver, Might and Magic, Brothers In Arms...
They already have too many IPs they're sitting on, it's like a fetish for them to hoard but do nothing with them. The Smiling Friends episode about Gwimbly was a bang-on parody of most modern publishers (including Xbox) for a reason.
Maybe they're looking to grab the rights to some old licensed games like Ubisoft's old TMNT games? This one is REALLY far fetched, but being able to just have the rights to the games published under one roof would make it easier when trying to renew deals with the IP holder. (This one is like 0.000001% likely I'm just spitballing but with them still wanting to preserve their history, these are a few of the 360 games still lost to time)
First of all, if MS acquires anything, it will be to bolster their mobile goals.
It makes sense that companies don't want to take on Ubisoft as it's massively bloated with too many employees who have far too many rights for American or Chinese mega corps to want to deal with. Just buying IP and letting Ubisoft die and its tens of thousands of employees become unemployed circumvents all that.
Hopefully if any IP is bought it will be used.
Please all rainbow six and assassin
Microsoft should just buy the whole company. Quit screwing around with buying only certain IPs.
Please far cry or Tom clancy
My guess is MS is looking at titles that are multiplayer focused or titles that could work on mobile. There are plenty of older titles MS could easily revive if they had the IP. Just my guess.
If Ubisoft had any sense they'd fire almost 10k people and close half their studios then maybe they could survive and there would be no need to sell IP's.
They are like twice the size of EA and have more studios than Xbox, Bethesda and ABK combined. Honestly the higher ups have they've lost their minds.
The only thing I care about rescuing from Ubisoft would be the Tom Clancy license. Rainbow, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, EndWar, and HAWX all deserve to be rescued from that dumpster fire and I believe studios within Microsoft could be a good for for them
The only other series of theirs that I care about is Beyond Good & Evil, but unless Rare or Double Fine took the reigns on it (which I don't either of them would want to) it wouldn't be a good fit for MS to own.
The rest of Ubisoft's IP can be left to sink with the ship.
@NeoRatt If they hadn't bought Activision, it could have been possible. Not too likely now, considering how scrutinized that deal was and how it changed them overall.
@Elbow
I think MS has been very clear that they are trying to sell there games to as many gamers as possible regardless of platform. This was one of the pillars of opposition to MS buying ABK. The other pillar of the opposition was their lay-offs right after the acquisition. But, as they stated that was a norm at the time through the industry.
I think it would be difficult especially with a Republican president for the USA regulators to stop another big deal. Other countries would have difficulty justifying opposition with the way MS has behaved since the acquisition of ABK.
Weeelll, I hope whatever happens doesn’t result in layoffs but other than that I am not impacted. Ubisoft has closed internal studios that I liked and the last franchise I was invested in, I will be departing after the new game hits my mailbox. Most of the franchises I love lost their original creators so I don’t expect sequels to be good if they happen. I have a ton of Ubisoft games to replay and beat. Super excited for AC shadows but that’s it.
@IOI even if it is a 10/10 game it's going to fail. If the crowd starts hating something it's really hard to turn things around and anything that comes from Ubisoft, EA or Xbox already has a 20% hate boost from the start 🤣
If true, I hope is or will the include Beyond Good and Evil IP and possibly Far Cry or even the RS or Ghost Recon. With Microsoft new multiplatform strategy people should be able to play these games regardless of platforms. I just want someone to make BGE, dammit.
I would like something to happen that allows us to get an Immortals Fenyx rising sequel.
Loved that game.
I could see Xbox buying the rights to The Division. And hopefully they would just take Massive with it.
A New 3D Rayman is all I want.
Microsoft should utilize the IPs they're already squatting on. Where's Banjo-Threeie?
Driver San Fran please
