Yesterday, Assassin's Creed Shadows was delayed again to March 2025, and it's unlikely that this ongoing uncertainty around Ubisoft is helping development matters. In a new press release that arrived alongside the delay, the Assassin's Creed maker has once again mentioned that it's looking for extra investment in the company as it heads into 2025.
Of course, there's plenty of corporate jargon tucked into this company update, but the long and short of it is that Ubisoft wants to trim down its operations and get extra investment to keep "the group" afloat in difficult times. Here's some of what was said in the new press release:
"Following the strategic and execution reviews initiated by the Executive Committee a few months ago, Ubisoft is taking decisive steps to reshape the Group in order to deliver best-in-class player experiences, enhance operational efficiency and maximize value creation.
Ubisoft announced today that it has appointed leading advisors to review and pursue various transformational strategic and capitalistic options to extract the best value for stakeholders. This process will be overseen by the independent members of the Board of Directors. Ubisoft will inform the market in accordance with applicable regulations if and once a transaction materializes."
That quote would suggest that nothing is in place just yet in terms of a potential buyout, but clearly, major changes are afoot when it comes to the future of Ubisoft. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has also added that Ubi CEO Yves Guillemot was reluctant to give any extra information on the future when talking to investors this week.
We first heard strong reports of Ubisoft's new direction back in October, when Bloomberg outed plans for a buyout at the Assassin's Creed maker. Reuters then followed up with similar reporting last month, adding that discussions had taken place about "how to structure a possible buyout". Time will tell what happens here, but we'll certainly be following this story at Pure Xbox.

They could always sell off some IP instead of the whole company. Splinter Cell? Rayman?
I guess that wouldn’t be enough to save them.
“We really need to get this done before Shadows sinks us, and we’re being very aggressive in escaping this sinking ship with SOMETHING.”
AC Shadows is looking worse and worse with each passing video they load on social media.
Just wait a year, and they can buy it for 50-75% off.
I would love for Microsoft to buy Ubisoft. I could only imagine what all the help from other studios how Division 3 would turn out. Plus with Microsoft becoming multiplatform all Ubisofts games on game pass is a win for gamers
I’m not really a big AC fan, but Shadows looks alright. What will kill it in the end is the worst possible timing of releasing in the same year as Ghost of Yotei. Take a look at the two side by side and it’s clearly Ghost of Yotei, and ‘We have Ghost of Yotei at home’. I suppose Ubisoft didn’t have any choice left but to ‘Break Glass for Assasin’s Creed in Japan’, but the timing couldn’t be worse.
It's a daunting task for any potential buyer. The number of studios and employees is a huge expense and assassins creed is the only real profitable ip. It would need scaling back in size or an embracer-like willingness to spend money on a gamble that it would turn around as it is.
Come on Phil, get that check book out yet again.
I think Microsoft buying Ubisoft would be great as they are lacking IPs that are open-world third person, they usually always opt for first person but we have enough of them.
@MaccaMUFC they won’t be able to, because of the Ubisoft/MS deal that was made to get the Abk deal through.
But seriously who would want to buy Ubi? Lots of staff, some good IP but dated for many of them.
Got some franchise's I have really enjoyed...Loved the ghost recon advance warfighter games, rainbow six Vegas games....far cry and Splinter cell ..the best ones for me off the top of my head
Always wanted a advanced warfighter reboot
@Deshalu agreed. MS buying them keeps it multiplatform (and MS regains the regional cloud rights to Activision titles) offers the greatest chance of making that money back.
Theres not really a while lot of options from within gaming. Sony or Nintendo buying them means making them exclusives and Ubisoft, who needs to rally, really needs a wide net to recoup all those dev costs.
EA, Valve and Epic are all doing their own thing. Take Two has GTA coming so isn't spending elsewhere. Bandai/Square have been slimming down.
Just sell the assassin's creed IP they have done a terrible job with the games since the 360 days!
Total reboot needed and don't just kill off Desmond just to milk the franchise to death!
Damn how quickly they fell. It takes just couple of years of mismanagement and mediocre/failure releases for a publisher company to start sinking.
The last successful non-niche game was AC valhalla.
AC mirage, avatar, FC7, watch dogs legion were at best mediocre financially and as games.
Xdefiant, skull and bones were failures.
The only decent was prince of persia metroidvania but its niche and despite high scores they cancelled sequiel already.
Live services like divnity and rainbow six were also losing players.
They also have insane headcount of nearly 20k employees across the world (maybe less now as they fired a lot).
Unless its another move by Geillemos brothers to sink the company and buy more shares, we are looking at a buyout. And i would not expect things to get better if its Tencent.
I feel like they have to close half of studious and focus on couple of successfull IPs like rainbow and AC.
Did i forget something?
It must be a hell of a gamble to invest in Ubisoft right now. Assassin’s Creed still sells, but Far Cry, Star Wars, Avatar, Splinter Cell and all the other Tom Clancy games, The Crew etc etc have either been dormant so long they no longer have the selling power they once did, or have been meh at best.
@K1LLEGAL i dont think it costs much unfortunately. Those are old school titles for older fans. They need cash cows like AC or rainbow as company is too big
@Millionski you forgot to tell me you were typing all that and making the same point I was, but making it so much more clearly than I managed!
@MaccaMUFC I would probably not want industry to consolidate further.
I dont like the idea of Tencent buying them either - prob more mobile games with those IPs.
Ideally if someone just invested more money into them and fully restructure the company. Its too big ship now, they cant handle it. It should be way smaller with focus on just several IPs
@ChopperCampbell lol yeah. I forgot the crew and SW outlaws.
But seems like they just cant handle so much staff and projects
@Balaam_ ghost of yotei prob later in the year as we dont have release date. I agree if both releasing in same month that would be bad. If its months apart then should be fine. Also it works the other way around - sony also does not want unneded competition with AC. Despite all the ubiquitous problems, AC is a very strong brand.
I'll buy them for a dollar.
MS can't buy them, but they could do a partnership, couldn't they? Offer to fund or publish a few games in exchange for permanent gamepass inclusion.
I dont want anyone buying Ubisoft if possible, but trying to think of best case scenarios outside of that.
Wait....what?! You mean their ridiculously overpriced subscription service isn't paying the bills? 😂
I don't think it would be a good idea if Microsoft bought them. They'd probably just shut down all the studios and keep the IPs. Then what after that? Who's going to make AC, splinter cell and all those other dead franchises?
U never top black flag ever Ubisoft period
I'm sure if Xbox didn't buy Activision/Blizzard they would be the #1 buyer.
If Sony bought they just make games exclusive, Nintendo doesn't make sense with their hardware class, and someone like Valve doesn't align too much.
I think EA and Ubisoft together could be "better" situation than most if Ubisoft needs to be purchased. The best case is someone completely a private buyer if it has to happen.
