As part of an update on the future of Microsoft's 'Age' series, Xbox has confirmed that Age Of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold are both heading to PS5 in 2025. These are the latest Xbox Game Studios titles to be announced for the Sony platform, following the reveal of a Forza Horizon 5 port last week.
Age of Mythology: Retold will be the first to move over - that one is heading to PlayStation 5 in just a few weeks' time on March 4th. Pre-orders for the PS5 version of Retold are now live, and Premium Edition purchasers can play the game early from February 27th. The main launch is set to coincide with the next major expansion - Immortal Pillars.
As for Age of Empires 2, we don't have a date for that PS5 port just yet. The development team at World's Edge says "we’re keeping some details under wraps until spring" in regards to AoE2's future, so we can probably expect a more solid launch window for that one in the coming weeks.
Both of these PlayStation versions of Age will be completely crossplay enabled with Xbox and PC - hugely expanding the overall playerbase for Microsoft's premiere strategy series. Here's what the team had to say on this move:
"Playing across all platforms is a game-changer for our franchise, and it’s all about bringing our community together. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about growing and strengthening the Age community. With cross-play, we’re creating one global battlefield where every strategy, every empire, and every player matters."
Thoughts on this latest move from Microsoft? Talk to us about it all down below.

Today it was announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a new season with Sarah Michelle Gellar. No one is going to ruin this day for me, so I'll just sit this one out and watch with popcorn.
I'll say what I've said a thousand times. It's not the end of the world. It's not the end of Xbox. Quite the contrary, actually.
Is a new age upon us or exactly what they stated years ago, some games ported to other consoles on a case-by-case basis? They mentioned PS and Nintendo back then. Maybe Nintendo added a mouse to Switch 2 for Age of Empires 😁 and its power will hopefully be more suitable for third-party and Xbox games. The only reason why PS5 got Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush and Switch didn't is because of the weak hardware, that's for certain.
Age of Full Slate
@Kaloudz wtf is the Buffy thing really true???
@Krzzystuff Yep 😊 Deadline reported on it this afternoon. Hopefully that raises interest in the OG games getting a remaster 😍
I'd take them over Age games any day.
It’s all cool, the biggest publisher in world will share games and distribute as it wishes.
As long they are on GPU day one and we have another Xbox console super powerful after series x that’s fine.
@OldGamer999 completely agree with this take.
Noooooo!! Not Age of Mythology! That’s it! I’m selling my Xbox and becoming a Swiftie 😜 let others have their fun with those. Now, has Avowed launched yet?
It confirms the lessons they learned from Sea of Thieves. The only game from 4 (SOT, grounded, pentiment, hifi rush) that really succeeded on PlayStation, it is an old service game (GAAS), and forza horizon 5 follows the same logic, another old GAAS. It makes total sense for these games to be multiplatform, mainly after many years !
It clarifies Xbox's multiplatform strategy, which is much more nuanced than some might think, case by case.
Afterward, I would avoid the usual extrapolations from media hungry for clickbait
I think it’s safe to say everything is coming to PS5 and (probably) the Nintendo Switch 2 at this point.
@jFug 100%
I would like to see Halo: Infinite next.. That game could do with a breath of new life tbh. Should sell well and populate the servers.
@Isolte
Being honest I think Xbox should have fought more with all the studios they have now, especially in the console market and console GPU.
But it is my red circle, I cannot do anything about it.
So I just now chill and enjoy series x and GPU and all the great future games day one and there seem to be plenty coming after last years Indy and COD. Just look at the first 6 months of this year.
Let Microsoft make more money and give me more great games on Xbox consoles and GPU.
I would actually like to see these games on the switch 2. If the mouse joy-con is a thing that is.
@gollumb82 ironically, the best console version of Avowed will be released on PS5 Pro (inevitable)
@jfug: absolutely not ! Case by case, not all games are worth it for Xbox. The choice of games like Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 5, or Age of Empires is not insignificant; they are all old GAAS, and it makes total sense. I'm not saying this will be the only type of game, but it's clearly a profile of games that are more likely to be ported to other platforms, but not all games.
Phil Spencer said it during the Destin's interviews, not all games, and he repeated several times the case-by-case strategy. There are some trolls and certain media outlets that try to create clickbait by making people believe otherwise.
@ZAHMED
The more money Xbox make selling games to Sony and Nintendo the more great games I get for XSX and GPU day one.
As for console exclusives there are still some on day of release like Avowed and south of midnight if that helps anyone.
To me it’s about the console and eco system where you want to play the games and Xbox series x and GPU eco system is the place for me.
And now and again maybe the odd game purchased from a third party, maybe like the new assassins creed in March.
A couple of great games. There aren't a lot of rts games available on ps5 hopefully these games thrive there.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Dr_ENT
Nah,that will be the PC version. This kind of stuff (getting worked up about frame pacing, which game has a more upscaled resolution or slightly more fps etc) is something I want no part in. Pretty sure it will look and play great on XSX.
@fatpunkslim so are you just ignoring the fact that recently MS have said no red lines on games, 2 announcement in a week of games moving?
Oh and Indy, doom and outer worlds.
It’s all going, no one is believing your argument.
I think what is actually crazy is we are getting an article for each of these. And then we are going to get them again when they flood the Switch 2 with these games.
Great news. Age of mythology needs more audience. Such a great game and very good remaster! Was a fan during my childhood. WOuld be cool to have xbox+PS crossplay using controller.
@Isolte
Think I shall always buy new consoles and games and maybe some subscription service until the day I die.
I think I have at least another ten years in my gaming bones yet. 🤣
Honestly it’s just funny how poorly Phil’s quote about the dam not opening has aged in less than a year. That quote is ageing like milk.
@x3King84 I agree! Halo The MCC definitely deserves a revival 😏
@Isolte
Well you are 3 years younger than me so I might get to retirement a little before you 🤣
Removed - flaming/arguing
@PsBoxSwitchOwner absolutely right based on what they have said most recently it’s going to be almost all games getting ported to other consoles.
And why wouldn’t they? In December Microsoft made 64% of their gaming revenue on PlayStation, that’s effectively twice as much as on Xbox, PC, Mobile, Cloud and Switch combined.
@OldGamer999 in a perfect world I totally agree with you, more games on more platforms is only a good thing now that Microsoft is such a large publisher. So long as Day 1 games keep coming to Game Passalong with Xbox console hardware it’s all good.
My only concern is what would happen to Xbox hardware if less players buy the console? Potentially third parties could stop developing for Xbox as much and it could easily get out of Microsoft’s control and spiral.
@themightyant they didn’t become a $3trillion behemoth by leaving money on the table.
Putting games elsewhere makes that line go up and shareholders happy.
As you say, they have the figures that show it works for them. So whether it’s good, bad, or bit of both, it’s happening.
@themightyant
Xbox hardware is always the issue, well not currently with series x, and I think they produce another home console under the tv full power and of course Sony PS6, maybe 2027/2028
After that it’s anyone’s guess for either company being about 2034/2035 at end of life for PS6 and Xbox prime.
Pretty sure everything recent and upcoming will be brought over at this point. XBOX is still doing well, but they fumbled too hard in terms of console sales. They’re basically a “glorified” third-party at this point… which, while weird, doesn’t bother me as long as their game output is good.
1 step closer to Halo!
Again I think it's great for 'Xbox' and expanding their IP's. On Xbox, we've had the opportunity to buy and even 'play' with the Stagnating community that still 'play' those games as 'newer' games release. It's a great way to inject life into these Great IP's we've had the opportunity to play 'exclusively' for quite some time!
Also still remain 'free' on Game Pass and if that hasn't 'grown' the community with the market 'limited' by platform choice, as in anyone that really wanted to play these would likely have bought Xbox or just 'prefer' to play on Playstation regardless...
I'm still likely to buy the next Xbox because of Game Pass and my growing Digital Library - regardless of whether MS releases Some/All games on Playstation and I still expect 'some' games will be 'exclusive' for some time before release rather than have to wait months/years...
The money they can make from 'selling' on Playstation let alone Nintendo too (especially 'older' games) may mean they can take more of a hit on 'Hardware' price next gen...
I wish they would stop this drip feed of titles. We know they know that we know that they are going to release the entire Xbox 1st party library to all other platforms going forward so just break the dam and let the flood of Microsoft IP’s flow out into the gaming landscape already.
@Kaloudz now THIS is big news. Loved that show as a kid.
@TanaDax yea it would be better if it was all in one go, but I do think some are being saved for Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct in April - I think that is where they say Halo is going.
Half expecting phil to rock up at the rumoured playstation showcase (or whatever they call it) in Feb to announce the upcoming releases for PS5. All of these ports weren't developed over night. They've been ticking along all the time folks argue that it's only 4 games.
Good for age of empires. Hopefully people stop playing clash of clans and enjoy these masterpieces more than all the mobile clones
It would probably be better to just give the dates for all the games coming instead of drip feeding. They are basically giving the games media and players a continuous wave of negative announcements instead of just the one 😐
Microsoft - the multi-trillion dollar company that has a gaming division that's broke.
Doesn't concern me really. I'll still play whatever I want to play on whatever platform I choose, PS, Xbox, Switch, Doesn't matter really. I think most people own multiplatform anyways. Let people play where they wanna play.
'We wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do. And we wanna get loaded. And we wanna have a good time...' (sic).
@Juanalf I think MS wants some level of confusion on foreign consoles. You don't want them taking ports for granted. There could be new Xboxes in a couple years. Sony habitually obfuscates the exclusivity period of third-party deals.
@gollumb82 I clearly specified and said "console version". Ofcourse 4090 or the new 50 series are way powerful than PS5 Pro.
You dont need to write any articles about games porting to ps5 any longer i think..
Were all good and get the strategy by now..
@Dr_ENT
I got you the first time. I clearly specified I’m in no way affected by playing a slightly inferior version graphics-wise. If I was into this whole graphical prowess arms race I’d be gaming on a PC. This is not what console gaming used to be about, but I get that some console gamers expect their games to be played with all the bells and whistles. I go all the way back to Commodore 64 so this might be why I’m indifferent to this, though.
Halo & Gears are next
@Kaloudz OMFG I just hit Google at 1,000mph to fact check that. Can't believe it! I'm so stoked. Buffy back, after a literal age! 😆
Thank you for the heads up!
@Isolte Yeah, I have an expensive PC that I barely ever game on too... I can't stand windows, multiple game front ends, driver issues etc, just want to sit on a sofa, turn the controller on and play.
Sad to see you losing the taste for modern gaming too mate, I've never been more invested in gaming myself and loving every minute despite being over 60, but we are all different and I hope you enjoy your gaming through the past years. There's so much rich gaming in our past, if I could ever stop playing the new releases 😄👍
As for this news, we all know all titles will release everywhere they can now, they have been saying this for sometime. Anyone suggesting that some titles will remain exclusive are deluding themselves and should look at what Phil has quite clearly spelt out. There will be some older titles I'm sure where it is assessed the porting work Vs potential new sales makes it not worth the effort, but everything else will be ported wherever it can be sold.
...and Buffy's back! Happy day 😄
@Kaloudz Good man she was it for me as a teenager my god👹🙆
@Isolte Ah, I see. My issues with PC are different then - for me its too much like work 😁
Whilst I absolutely love modern gaming and cant enough AAA titles that have evolved game concepts and pushed tech boundaries, I can definitely share your thoughts on the merits of good couch co op, and I prefer this too over online play most of the time. Except for Helldivers 2, that was a riot!
Have a great day mate..
@x3King84 Yes, absolutely! I imagine the multiplayer games, Xbox team against PS team! It would really make sense, players would really have fun at this war!
@Kaloudz
Wow, they really are bringing back Buffy! Will it work now? Or is it too 'of it's time'? Really hoping it will be like the old days.
At this point it's clear that all games will be on PS5 and this site continually mentioning it seems to indicate an intention to be multiformat anyway. That's fine, it's a great site and I play on all consoles, but the constant articles may be annoying some users... I guess that's good for engagement.
@Juanalf Yeah I agree. We spend more time discussing PlayStation than actual Xbox these days and that’s because Microsoft is too chicken to come clean with their customers. We can all see where this is inevitably going. Just announce all games for all franchises going forwards will arrive day and date with PS5 and get it over with already. Death by 1000 cuts is far worse than just being honest, transparent, and upfront.
@Isolte The blonde hair and blues eyes just melted me ha but definitely wouldnt say no to faith hahaha plus had a thing for willow aswell haha 😂
Well I'm 61, @Isolte & @OldGamer999, and already retired and living off my Police pension. I smashed my back some years ago, and now live on a diet of close to 50 tablets a day to ward off the pain and resulting affects. My wife died a few years ago, and so retirement has meant plenty of time to indulge in my favourite pastime. I still buy games; most likely one or two a month. I usually manage between 4 and 6 hours of gaming a day, which suits me just fine... 😊
Thank you, @Isolte, but now you have made me feel really old! I have two grandchildren aged 10 and 12, so not much younger than your children... 🤣
@Isolte Loved it back in the day have to say!
@Isolte Not to sure of it working especially with the original cast back probably better a straight reboot but I could be wrong!
I won't be watching the new one anyway probably wouldn't be into now
@Fiendish-Beaver
Dude - sorry to hear you have back pain and have lost your wife.
I have had back pain for 15 years myself (along with all my other issues) and it's no fun. Respect for your service in the force, one of my best mates was a serving cop for 20 years before he joined me helping the homeless. I've met a lot of solid decent people who served in the force.
I'm about to 'medically retired' myself, so no doubt I'll get a good 4 to 6 hours of games in a day too - I'm almost managing that now while I'm working
Have a great one.
@Kaloudz it’s kind of a reboot, but it’s not as she’s still being Buffy and it’s a new Slayer. I’m here for it. Funny my ex and I went through and watched it then jumped to Angel cause I liked that show better haha.
@fatpunkslim sorry, but in a few years time, there will be no Xbox console exclusives and all XGS, ABK and Bethesda games will launch simultaneously on whatever will run them. You can quote me on that.
Microsoft wants gaming to stay profitable for it as a company, and clearly Game Pass and console exclusives alone aren't cutting it; nor have they been for about a decade.
It's not a bad thing. Only die hard fanboy idiots would see it that way. More games in more places is a good thing.
How many years have we been hearing that Xbox is going to stop making consoles, that Xbox is going to die? Yet they've never been doing so well. Sorry, only trolls say that, or those who don't understand Xbox's strategy. No need to mention you, you've already lost, Xbox is not going to stop making consoles or exclusive games; if it happens, it will be the same for PlayStation. We're talking about old games and service games here; Sea of Thieves is the only game that really worked on PS5, so it's normal they prioritize these types of games, and it's the same for FH5 and Age of Empires. It's logical for Xbox to seek money elsewhere after several years. Don't talk to me about Doom, which is already a multiplatform game, or Indiana Jones, which is a Disney license already signed before the acquisition.
Xbox is on a case-by-case strategy and temporary exclusivity for the games they decide to port, as the facts show. Why aren't Avowed or South of Midnight coming out day one on PS5? Because it's not their strategy! You can continue to repeat the same things based on speculations, but it doesn't make business sense what you're saying:
80% of Game Pass subscribers are on console.
Why continue to sign third-party exclusives (Stalker 2, Ark 2, etc.) if they don't care about exclusives?
Why not announce Avowed and South of Midnight directly on PS5? Maybe they'll come out in 3-4 years, but who wants to play a game 4 years later? A temporary exclusive is still an exclusive.
I'm not saying this as a fanboy, but simply with common sense and based on the facts.
You must be quite young or have a short memory then, some people were saying the same thing at the time of the Xbox One. When Xbox put its games on PC, for example, knowing that the PC market is very different and Microsoft has always made games for Windows.
Are we not almost at the point where these aren't headline articles now?
The metrics are there. MS know how much money is being made moving titles over I'm not sure it's big news anymore.
@Jaxx420 Xbox mostly knows the types of games that bring in the most money, the service games: Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 5, Age of Empires and Retold. Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment didn't do well on PS.
In any case, siphoning the wallets of PlayStation players means more games in Game Pass and more exclusive games, even if some are just temporary.
@fatpunkslim Maybe and I don't disagree with where you are coming from. But it isn't just service games they know will bring the money in otherwise the new Doom wouldn't be day one on PS5. They know mainstream games will bring the cash in too.
@Isolte @Titntin Im in a similar boat of having a good pc, but find myself gravitating more and more to the console. For me its the C3 OLED thats making the difference as it really changes games up in such a major way.
Currently replaying TLoU Part 1 and the dark areas on an OLED panel make the whole experience so much better. If steam make a nice small PC console that I can stick under the TV then that will probably be the best of both worlds.
@Jaxx420 Doom, like outerworlds, call of duty were already multiplatform, and Xbox committed not to make games that were already multiplatform exclusive, so it's a different logic, these are not formerly exclusive games. but in any case, it will also bring them money.
@Ilyn Yeah - seeing dark details properly really changes things up!
A PC console is top of my wish list, either the rumoured steam one, or the next MS console - whoever does it, give it to me! 😊
@fatpunkslim No it doesn't detract from them already being multiplat but also similarly can't argue this is a big step up from Xbox when it comes to marketing their games and it certainly won't be just service games.
@OldGamer999 exactly 💯
Removed - flaming/arguing
@fatpunkslim I speak from speculation and you speak from facts.
Okay big call but let's see it. Send me those facts and I'll retract what I said and say it's fine as facts have corrected me.
But you won't be able to do that. You are as in the dark and speculating as the rest of us.
@Jaxx420 I have already given the facts, look back through the discussion. The facts are simply to look at the types of games that are being ported and that they clearly prioritize service games. There will be other types of games, but we remain on a case-by-case basis and temporary exclusivity. The facts are also that Xbox continues to make exclusive games and announce exclusive games and sign contracts for exclusive games with third parties, which also proves that keeping some exclusive games remains important, even if for some games, it's temporary.
but I understand that it's not easy to see clearly in the midst of media confusion eager for clickbait, and PlayStation trolls who come to reassure themselves
@Fiendish-Beaver
Sorry to hear about your wife and the back pain issues.
Well I have had two knee operations and a good ole hernia operation, but luckily me back is in a good state.
I have a grandchild age 4, so not in your league just yet 🤣
@NeutronBomb You're more than welcome buddy! I had to double take when I saw the news. I knew they did a canon season 8 (audible only) last year, but this is an actual fully fledged season. Hopefully it leads to the re-release of those two games
@NintendoByNature Me too! I had all the DVDs, the CDs, the comics, and everything when I was a teen and this was on lol.
@Ricky-Spanish Same here brother! I had everything in my teenage room Buffy-themed lol!
@JetmanUK I'll watch it no matter how good or bad it is. I absolutely adored the series (and the spin offs). God knows whether it will work though. How will they write out or write in Angel and Spike, who are now 60+? Who will return? How will it fit in and will it retcon all the canon comics and such that has been released since?...
@IssaBrvndo Yeah the writer's room is soon to be setup and I think we will have the series in the middle of next year. I read that Buffy will be in it as a reoccurring main character, but it will focus on a new slayer. I'm down with that as there was so many unanswered questions at the end of the cancelled Angel season 5 :/ Time will tell!
On topic, are these games even worth playing for someone like myself? I don't do well with tactical games, but are they easy to jump in and out of or do you have to sell your soul to the game to enjoy it/them?
@fatpunkslim I'm assuming the message directly under mine is directed at me? You didn't "reply" to my comment so there's no real way to know, but:
I never once mentioned that Xbox would stop making consoles or that they were going to die. What I said was that the model of relying on the combo of console-exclusive games and Game Pass subscribers isn't enough to gain the profits the company wants to achieve. Their consoles are selling drastically lower numbers than Sony, and guess what: if 80% of Game Pass subscribers are on console and hardly anyone's buying those consoles, Game Pass subscribers won't increase. They'll stagnate. 80% of not much is still not much. Microsoft clearly sees this, or else they wouldn't release games on competitors' platforms. Sony begrudgingly sees this; they're releasing games on PC and will eventually cave in and release games on competitors' platforms.
What?
Correct.
Incorrect.
Correct. They should be squeezing any money they can from the increased player bases gained by putting existing live-service games on PlayStation. Other games - non-live-service games - will follow suit. Eventually they'll all release day and date on PlayStation.
I mentioned none of these.
@fatpunkslim
Not yet it isn't, but it will be. This case-by-case strategy you keep mentioning? Funny how it disregards the many times Spencer has said there are no red lines in regards to what they'd release on competitors' platforms; no games that they wouldn't consider bringing over.
I only made one post.
Yes. And how many consoles have they sold? What's 80% of bugger all?
Because they're trying to up the perceived value of Game Pass, even more so after several price hikes and forcing people into Ultimate if they want day one releases.
Because vocal fanboys are getting vocally butthurt about their precious box's games being available on another person's different precious box. They're being eased into it. Think of this slow and measured approach as lube for fanboys.
Never called you a fanboy. I said fanboys are the only ones upset about Xbox games coming to rival consoles.
Debatable.
Good chat.
@Markatron84 To keep it short: I think Xbox's strategy is much more subtle than some think. Sending all Xbox games to other platforms is definitely not their strategy. The "no red lines" simply means they allow themselves to judge any game as potentially multiplatform, but that doesn't mean they will port everything to other platforms; it's a very simplistic interpretation.
Furthermore, during the interview with Destin, Phil clearly said no to the question if all games were going to PlayStation.
Interestingly, the media prefer to only highlight the excerpts that fit their narrative, ignoring those that contradict it.
Xbox's strategy is much more nuanced than an all-or-nothing approach; it will be somewhere in between because they know very well the value of keeping some exclusive games. They will stop doing it when all competitors stop making exclusive games, but not before.
In the end, it wasn't very short after all.
Good talk
@fatpunkslim we'll agree to disagree then. But I truly think that Xbox's strategy, nuanced as it may be right now, will end in no console exclusive games.
Cracking conversation.
@Markatron84 I will believe it when I see it, but I think it will be the case when no one makes exclusive games anymore, not before. In the meantime, if we look at the 2025 Xbox lineup, it has more exclusive games than PlayStation (not difficult at the same time when the guy next door makes almost no first-party games except for remakes).
The big advantage of Xbox is that it does not depend on third-party publishers; they have the choice to port a game or not to other platforms, unlike PlayStation, whose 80% of exclusive games are from third-party publishers. And unfortnately for them, few anf few thirs party publishers want make exclusive games like square, capcom and almost everyone.
Xbox has once again acquired a former PlayStation-exclusive franchise: Onimusha.
@fatpunkslim What you gave are opinions not facts but that's fine that's what we all chat on here to do. Facts would involve posting a link to data to back it up - don't see it.
If you see it as facts that's fine, that's your opinion. But as you speak facts. Xbox didn't acquire Onimusha. The original went multiplat back in 2002 here's a link . https://amzn.eu/d/bxxg3UC you speak only in facts I'd maybe have fact checked that first.
I like this so I liked this.
Oh snap new content!!!!!
Regardless of how much money ms is making I think it's sad that the xbox brand as a console is slowly dying and many are cheering it on because of profits?? Sure are a lot of shareholders on here
@Isolte you beat me to that one 🤣
@Kaloudz Do you recall the awful CGI when vamps changed faces? I think if they CGI de-aged Spike & Angel now, oddly enough it would look and feel in keeping with the original.
Couldn’t care less as long as they keep up there new games output
@Jaxx420 I didn't mean "acquire" in that sense, of course. I meant that it was a PlayStation exclusive now available on Xbox, like many others (Sifu, Kena, Forspoken, Death Stranding, MLB The Show, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, etc.). These are third-party games, but since 80% of PlayStation exclusives are third-party games, it's still relevant. At this rate, PlayStation will have far fewer exclusives than Xbox, even with Xbox porting some old games
@NeutronBomb That's actually a very good point - I forgot they could de-age people. And yeah I remember those awful CGI 🤣 all the craze back then though. Man, what a show. Glory was my fave villain, followed by Angelus! Aw man I want to play those two games now!! Did you ever play them? I believe they were on OG Xbox.
@fatpunkslim
Thats only true if Xbox doesnt port all of their games to Playstation and/or Switch 2 in the future, in which case Xbox has no exclusives and Sony and Nintendo have all the exclusives. Doesnt mean Xbox wont have games though, and Gamepass will remain good value for many.
We’ll find out pretty soon, probably within months, what Microsoft intends I think.
Edit - and of course if Sony doesnt change strategy and start releasing first party games on Xbox
@mac_da_man Of course, Xbox is not going to port all their games to other consoles; nothing allows us to say that today, it wouldn't make sense from a business perspective for many reasons. Many people get carried away by media extrapolations. The multiplatform strategy is primarily aimed at growing markets, that is, PC and cloud gaming.
And the big advantage is that Xbox has the choice, as most of their exclusives are first-party. This is not the case for PlayStation, which does not have this luxury; they largely depend on third-party publishers for their exclusives.
@Isolte One could ask you and others the same question. As a gamer, yes, I prefer all games to be available everywhere, which is also why I prefer Xbox, with play anywhere, own games on cloud, its backward compatibility policy, cross-save, cloud gaming, etc...
But from a business perspective and with a realistic view of the industry, I don't see Xbox jumping headfirst into multiplatform without at least keeping temporary exclusives, because I think it would be too disruptive to switch too quickly to full multiplatform given the current industry landscape, and from what I understand, that's not what they're doing.
It may be the case in the future, but it will be in a gaming landscape very different from today, where almost no one will make exclusive games anymore, but I don't see that happening for another two console generations.
After all, this is the subject of the article at the same time, so it's normal that I respond to this topic.
@fatpunkslim
You say Xbox wont port all their games as its a fact, but Phil said no red lines so we dont know to what extent Xbox will release their first party games on other consoles yet. They might or they might not. Their actions suggest they will, but time will tell and thats my point. Their strategy is not a full known fact yet.
@mac_da_man "No red lines" doesn't mean anything; it's a very bad interpretation. It just means they allow themselves the choice to port or not any game according to different criteria, but it doesn't mean all games! It's a very big shortcut to think that! Their actions suggest they will not. Sorry, I only see some timed exclusives from old games, and I still see exclusive games, so no, nobody can say this is the direction they take.
I think the real test will be Forza Horizon 6 or the next big Xbox exclusive. If it comes out day one on PS5, then you would be right, otherwise, we are indeed looking at a case-by-case strategy and timed exclusives.
@Isolte We agree, I also prefer a world without exclusive games, as I've said before. But you say this as a PC gamer. As an Xbox and PC gamer, I have a slightly different view of what's good for Xbox, and I don't think the complete end of exclusive games is a good thing, at least not in the short/mid-term. In the long term, if the gaming landscape is different from today, I wouldn't say no!
But I think Xbox is well aware of all this, and as I mentioned, they have a much more subtle approach than some might think.
There is my gamer point of view, which is totally in agreement with you, and my point of view of what I think is good for Xbox, which is a bit different.
