Four years on from Battlefield 2042, EA has finally showcased a sliver of gameplay from its next Battlefield title. Not officially Battlefield 6 just yet but certainly the next mainline release, the game is now in the pre-alpha stage and is welcoming public playtesters in the coming months.
That public playtesting loop will take place under 'Battlefield Labs', a new program that aims to bring players into the development process much earlier than previous Battlefield titles. It sounds much like an early access program, but it remains quite closed off for now - you have to sign up to be in with a chance of playing early.
"Battlefield Labs is a place for us to test concepts and experiences weβre excited about with you, our players. We want our community to play a key role in the future of Battlefield and this is an opportunity for many of you to do just that.
Even in pre-alpha, we are proud of where the game is at. We tirelessly playtest, but your feedback will supercharge our development as we strive to hit that perfect note between form, function, and feel.
This is an unprecedented moment for Battlefield."
The good news is that if you do get in, you can do your early playtesting on Xbox. EA has announced that Battlefield Labs will be available on Xbox Series X|S as well and PS5 and PC, and you'll need at least Xbox Game Pass Core to get stuck in on the Microsoft console platform.
We don't have any timing details on this testing program yet, but EA has previously said that BF6 community testing will start in early 2025, so we reckon it'll be right around the corner after today's announcement. Battlefield Labs is set to expand over time to "tens of thousands" of players, with testers getting to try out "Conquest and Breakthrough, the heart and soul of our all-out warfare experience".
Finally, as we highlighted in the heading, this introduction to BF Labs does contain a tiny slice of actual gameplay from the next Battlefield title. It's all looking very Battlefield 3-esque, and you can check it for yourself in the short clip below.
Battlefield fans, what do we think? Talk to us about this early look at BF6 & Labs down below.

2042 became a great game but everyone had written it off by then. Hopefully the next one hits. I love battlefield.
More destructible environments! That is what I was hoping for with next-gen. Hopefully these aren't all just pre-scripted.
@themightyant I feel like I've been expecting that since the jump from Xbox 360 lol.
Itβs BAAACK!!! Sign me up. When Battlefield is good, I can grind on it for months on end. I think this one should be really good with all the work and effect going into making sure it launches right. I will for sure be watching this one unfold all along the way. Exciting times.
Time to buy a new PC.
By the way the far cry new dawn 60fps 4K update is now out and looks amazing on series x.
Show how and like now, how current generation is needed to show older last generation games at their intended console best.
Same will happen with this generations games pushing things to hard on current generation consoles and they will look and play better next generation.
OK! So first impressions on the gameplay trailer is... WOW!!! π
I love the Battlefield series. There's nothing else like it when it comes to online gaming, in my opinion of course π
Online battles can feel and look epic. I'm really excited about this.
I'm having a lot of fun still with BO6, but I think that by the time Battlefield releases, BO6 will be taking a back seat.
Do we know if it's a Game Pass release?
To this day I will stand on this hill....
Battlefield 3 and 4 were the height and pinnacle of multiplayer awesomeness for this franchise. There's a reason Battlefield 4 is still played by many on Xbox, even to this day.
The new game needs to bring back to the roots of Battlefield 3 and 4 to restore the glory days. Fully destructable environments, classes that complement the squad, events that transform the action and flow of a map so every game feels little different and more variety.
I can go on forever. But any fan of 3 or 4 will know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.
