Out of nowhere, the teams working on Battlefield over at EA have dropped a bunch of high-level details on a new entry in the series, which is expected to launch in the next year or two. The headlines here are that DICE & co. are "getting back to the core of Battlefield" with a modern setting - and direct inspiration from some of the series' biggest hits.
Those hits are primarily Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, which new head of the franchise Vince Zampella has shouted out in a revealing interview with IGN. Here's where Vince mentions these two ever-popular BF titles, and how they're directly influencing the next Battlefield game.
"I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it's that Battlefield 3... Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we'll see where it goes from there.
But I think for me, it's that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days. So I think it's nostalgic for players, for me, for the teams even. Those are kind of the heyday...although I would say 1942 also."
As part of this interview, the team has also revealed the first piece of concept art for the game, which you can view in the tweet down below. The image appears to depict a European city of some sort, half on fire; an element that has the potential for some 'levolution' style impact much like the BF4 days.
In closing, Vince is hesitant to give any hints at the development timeline for this future Battlefield game, but the lead does announce that some sort of pre-launch community program is being worked on - to be "announced next year".
"We have a program that we're going to announce next year around getting more community in, because that's kind of the core of what we have to do — get the community back on our side, get that trust back."
The rest of the interview is rather cagey, but the conversation does lead to chatter about Battlefield 2042 and the team's learnings from that game, alongside some other hints at classic BF features returning in this next series entry.

Yes yes yes yes and more yes. I still enjoyed BF2042, but my fav moments are from BF3 and BF4. I hope it's done right. I cannot wait!
I'd agree that BF3/4 was the 'pinnacle' of the Battlefield franchise in terms of setting and game-play. Hardline was too much of departure with BF1/5 not delivering on the 'Modern' and 2042 quite a departure on the Game-play too with Specialists and Large 'empty' maps.
I think most long term BF fans would want a Modern era and a return to the classic Battlefield squads and classes and this seems to be what we'll be getting....
Yeah, my trust in Dice to deliver on this promise is close to zero. I wonder if they finally managed to figure out what made Bad Company such a beloved part of the Battlefield franchise… 😂
BF4 is the only game I still play on my PC regularly. I think it's finally time to get a new computer
I will definitely be keeping tabs on this. I have very fond memories of BF4 (back on the PS4). Hopefully it goes to EA Play on day one too... 😁
They can’t have another shocker like they did with BF2042. Modern setting would be epic but still has to be done right. Anyways, BF3 was absolute peak for me. For some reason could never get into BF4 to be honest but it was still good.
Battlefield needs to get back to having engaging and purposeful "levolution" to their maps once again. That feature alone and how it integrated into each match in different ways is what made Battlefield 4 an amazing game to play for hours and hours in just one day. The way a map altered differently during each match, made every game a different experience every time. The monotonous play of a shooter game was not there. It was awesome!
Plus Battlefield needs to get back to how the gameplay mode rules were and how squads worked together is what I found missing in any game since 3 and 4.
Honestly if they just remade Battlefield 3 and 4 with about another 8-10 amazingly made new maps and brought over majority of maps from 3 and 4 it would sell ton of copies and rejuvenate the franchise.
Would go back to being my go to game.
I was hoping for a Bad Company 2 style game.
Ironic that one of the creators of CoD is now working on Battlefield.
My trust is very low but i'm excited. Hope they can pull it off and redeem the franchise
