Avowed launches in early access later today, and while developer Obsidian has detailed how Xbox Series X should perform, it hasn't really showcased that in gameplay - or given us proper details on the Xbox Series S version. Well, we've now got a bunch of early gameplay rolling in from both machines, including some quick frame rate tests.
Courtesy of YouTube channel The Xbox Tester, we can now take a look at how Avowed is performing on Xbox Series X and Series S. One interesting nugget of info we can gleam from these tests is that Xbox Series S also contains that coveted 40FPS mode, for folks who have a 120Hz TV at their disposal.

We'll throw both the Series X and Series S performance tests down below:
All in all, Avowed is looking very solid across all of its gameplay modes, and we're especially pleased to see that 40FPS gameplay also extends to Xbox Series S. As for 60FPS, that mode is exclusive to Xbox Series X at launch, and it seems to be running rather well on Microsoft's more powerful machine.
It's all shaping up pretty well so far, then, and it does feel like Obsidian has made great use of the extra development time that last year's delay afforded them. And that doesn't just feed into frame rates either - the whole experience has been very enjoyable for us so far, which you can read all about in our Pure Xbox review down below.
Thoughts on these performance clips, Avowed aficionados? Tell us if you're excited to go hands on down in the comments.

Apologies if you're seeing a placeholder image for the second video in this article (it should look fine on mobile devices).
We've kept it in anyway as it's well worth watching - just hit the play button and it'll show up!
Definitely will be playing this, but on PC. 60 fps is pretty important for me personally, so yeah, wish they had the option on console as well.
Edit: oh wait there's a 60fps mode. I'm dumb lol.
I'm glad to read that the 60fps is running rather well on Series X at launch.
@FraserG Thanks man!!
This game looks amazing. It might just be (behind DOOM) one of my GotY.
granted this might be a personal pet peeve but It does bother me when a performance mode doesn't tell you exactly what you are giving up.
So as I have a 120HTZ TV, @Kezelpaso, should I be looking to play it at 60FPS or 40FPS on my Series X...? Thanks...
@Fiendish-Beaver Hey! It totally depends on your preference, we'd recommend trying both to see what you think.
Typically, these 40FPS modes give you 30FPS graphics with smoother visuals and better response times, so they can strike a nice balance. If you want all-out fluidity then 60 should be the way to go! Both seem like viable options for Avowed.
@abe_hikura I have no idea about Avowed, but this generation is typically the 120fps mode (when available) the only video mode that makes noticeable graphical sacrifices. I'm going to try the 40 and 60fps modes in Avowed and stick to the one that performs best, maybe 40 is enough since my TV supports VRR. When it's either 30 or 60fps, I haven't found a case this generation where 60fps was not worth the minimal downgrade.
@Fiendish-Beaver try them both in first and third person perspective. I find 40fps to be fine in first person if you want the nicest looking game and a relatively smooth experience (tested in Avatar FOP). Third person you might prefer 60 fps performance mode however as 40 just didn't feel smooth enough in this perspective for me (tested in Hogwarts Legacy).
@Fiendish-Beaver I'm a big fan of 40fps as you get all the bells and whistles of quality mode at a much more smoother frame rate than you would expect from an additional 10 frames.
Thank god for the 60fps mode.
Just what I wanted,, now I can play and enjoy.
@OldGamer999 digital foundry recommend the 40fps mode but, if i remember correctly, you have a vrr tv so you should be golden.
@Weebleman
Yes I have the 120hz VRR TV.
Shall try both 40 and 60 but with every game on any console always gone 60.
@OldGamer999 you should be good with 60 in vrr. They said performance mode has some cut backs visually (things like lumin reflections, foliage, etc...) but it didn't seem to be anything that would put me off if I'm honest.
Performance is up and down at 60 but no issues with vrr
@Weebleman
Just trying to resist the devil’s temptation of early access on GPU 🤣
The series S version looks to be running pretty well. The 40hz mode is handy for those that have the right monitor.
