Today we have a major Xbox Game Pass update for you all! After years of anticipation, Obsidian's Avowed hits the library later today - playable for all Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members thanks to Microsoft's acquisition of the studio.
We're sure that most of you have seen plenty of online chatter about this game already, and it's been available in early access since last week - but later today, the standard edition will go live for all GPU players.
Here's what to expect from Avowed on Xbox Game Pass:
Avowed (Xbox Series X|S, PC, Cloud) - 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT
"Avowed is a first-person fantasy RPG set in the world of Eora, where your choices carve a path through war, intrigue, and ancient mysteries. Navigate a land in turmoil, forge powerful alliances or deadly rivalries, and wield magic and steel to shape the fate of the Living Lands—and your own destiny."

don't get me wrong, I get why but it does bother me that I have to wait till 6 PM to play the digital copy, particularly since there doesn't seem to be a physical copy of it
Looking forward to giving it a go tonight hopefully it's good enough to keep me from the backlog of games I've been working on!
Im looking forward to jumping in. Shame I have to wait till 6pm that’s annoying.
Diving straight in tonight, really looking forward to it
Jumping in tonight, for sure! Just finished my Legend run on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth last night just in time!
Waiting to try it!
Hope folks have as much fun as I did with Avowed.
Just for reference it took me just shy of 40 hours to complete the main story. I did skip a few fetch quest things in the last couple of zones to focus the main story.
Only issues I had using performance mode on Series X were some cut scene stutters when a particular character was in them. Other than that I didn't notice anything that impacted my gaming.
Will be doing another play through for sure but I am kind of wanting to play the first two Pillars of Eternity games before I go back to Avowed.
Cant wait. Reviews and word of mouth has been amazing so far. Very much looking forward to getting stuck in!
@RiverGenie That's a very decent play time. How much close to max completion did you get and how did you play? Relaxed? Focused? Rushed? Etc...
number of Avowed ads on this site is too damn high!
Well I did manage to hold off on the early access in the end, so will be on it tonight with GPU.
@Kaloudz It was a fairly relaxed play through & you could probably shave a few hours off the total time if you don't do as much exploring to uncover areas.
I am pretty sure I got most of the side quests & bounties but did skip on a couple of find & fetch quests in the last couple of area as i didn't need what they provided for my character. In terms of achievements I still have a load of things I could go for but I rarely chase achievements these days in any game (finished 16 / 50.)
@abe_hikura The main reason why it is 6pm is because digital players use the NZ trick which is technically not allowed. I do think they have gone the right way about it though by closing the loophole rather than banning players who exploited it. I think 6pm is a decent time for most in the UK who work or study. I do feel bad for those that took the day off to play the game although I would imagine someone that invested in the game would have got the early access. I got the early access on Friday at 6pm and I've really enjoyed the 20 hours or so I've played so far.
@RiverGenie Thanks so much! Sounds like you play the same sort of way that I do. I cant wait to get in on the fun! Not long to go until it unlocks for me
I like the gameplay I've seen on YT, and will download it later and give it a shot.
But I'm a wuss when it comes to spiders and this game has a lot, so how well I deal with that will decide whether I keep playing.
Been looking forwards to this a lot and for a long time.
The good thing about waiting a while to play it after 'early access' is that you get a good picture of its strengths and weaknesses, so you can adjust your mind-set and enjoy it for what it is. As such I'm not looking for choices with consequences, or likeable side-kicks, but I am looking forwards to great combat and stunning environments. I'll be booting this up at 6pm and I hope to enjoy it lots.
@Titntin in the main quest your choices will influence how others see you as you progress through the game, change some quite serious story plot points & the final ending itself. I think you would need multiple play throughs to cover all the choices available.
The side quests will also change who will help you in the main story climax. Its not a deep story as such but it was interesting enough to keep me engaged.
The companions are a bit one dimensional but there is still fun to be had by engaging with them. One i found to be pretty funny but she is the last one you meet up with.
@Darylb88 for me I think they should release at midnight in the US, would mean morning in Europe and evening in Asia.
@RiverGenie Thanks for the update mate! As I say, given the reactions of people whose opinions I know I value, I thought it better to dial down my expectations in this area to ensure I love it over all. I had heard you could treat your companions any way at all and it would make no difference to how they interact with you?
If it ends up being better in these areas than I expect, then so much the better
@Titntin I would say the companions are probably the weakest part of the game. Still fun can be had & I had a few laugh out loud conversations with them over the course of my play through.
Got it downloading so will play tonight… a lot of people bought early access as Avowed already #15 on most played games last week- even more than are playing KCD2
@RiverGenie Good to hear my friend, I'm actively looking to enjoy this, so I should hopefully feel the same way
@Ricky-Spanish
15 minutes to go, downloaded and ready.
Enjoy.
@OldGamer999 Thanks buddy just have to let my daughter play some Roblox before bed then I'm on that hope you enjoy mate👍💪
@Ricky-Spanish
So far about 30 minutes in absolutely great.
Tight control as well.
Already removed it. A big meh.
It's good but needs some tweaks. I don't like the 3rd person camera is half baked. It's 1st person first which is fine, but Borderlands 2 on 360 had better. Why this point at things, why not area magnetism. Do they only allow triggers of in area stuff for cutscenes. Why? Just have an area & highlight, or pick up all via menu to select from in area. I can come up with those in a few seconds.
Via an update sure but why not launch?
Fair dialogue history/lore option. Even Visual Novels did this. Or a glossary menu even. Terms/cutscene refresher.
Cross hair is too thin of lines & in sun invisible, too thin. No colour settings, no more designs, no thickness why?
If dual wielding & balancing of stats happens like Halo did I will find dual wielding pointless.
Compass/icons are too small. Developers & their screens/internet speeds are so comfortable yet forget people would like to see or not have to deal with things developers don't have because they are in the city with big monitors/TVs & good internet.
Like seriously console or PC, PC is worse for HUD scaling. With console/PC versions so similar these days it's even more annoying they go the PC HUD/DPI route and it's so stupid or don't offer scaling at all. Allow us to move HUD elements and scale them come on.
Why are they so incompetent at HUD size or text size at what 24 or something. Steam Deck/Portal it will be tiny by default with what on a TV around 8 or 11. Come on. No colourblind settings I could see either I think, why is the quality of life/accessibility not here. It's silly.
I want games to be more refined not 360 but too 360. Why waste 20+ years progress cough what progress as I go back and forth and find none has happened but visuals and we get oh it's being true to that.
I didn't play Spyro Reignited for it to be PS1 but I prefer the PS1 feel but in remake it's so heavy why? Jumps sucked and many other quality of life was just later abilities given early and for other games. Not replaced, what a waste. When PS1 feels better then a heavy garbage feeling why is floaty ignored. I hate heavy characters.
Besides racing even then I hate the physics in many these days but besides that the weight is handled well every other game has bad character feel.
Obsidian is great and I respect them and can get games out quick, but the polish and this budget/time it needs a bit more
I had updates as excuses.
Audiences don't care & want a game, not suggest anything or Devs too busy, may consider it/stuck up. Obsidian I assume are great but I'd like to see a few things implemented if possible.
I play 360 games still to this day, so to me I don't go oh it should feel like such & nostalgia over it. I don't nostalgia I want quality/ideas. Something this industry fails at.
It can have elements from that era but it shouldn't be close enough to it.
I hate history repeating & nostalgia garbage by Indies too nostalgic/inspired & lack prototyping potential to try out with no brains to make it better they don't have a brain, yet someone NOT making games can think things up in seconds & thinks games. I expect better but it's always visuals/garbage feel & game design.
Tell programmers/animations to get their butts into gear. I can to play a game not a art piece that moves for some.casuals that don't notice/care. I want quality & I see less quality every year & play retro games with their quality limitations in mind & go yep modern gaming hasn't changed in 20 years, complacent people/execs.
Wanted to like it but can’t get on with it.
Biggest gripe is the floaty controls/movement - feels like it’s an early prototype built by devs to demonstrate the basic gameplay to senior bods. Both 1st and 3rd person are equally awful.
Combat feels more basic and clunky than games from 20 years ago. Magic is dull and uninspiring.
Characters, dialogue and voice work aren’t doing it for me either.
All in all it’s completely meh.
I hoped this would get me away from Veilguard with its exploration and allegedly best in class combat, but instead I’m going to uninstall it. Veilguard has its shortcomings, but it feels and plays with real fluidity that encourages immersion. Avowed feels awful in comparison.
2 hours in and am enjoying it so far. Graphics are good. I am running it in Balance mode as i have a LG C3 Oled. Runs it really well and i do stop to take in the art from time to time. I like the heavy weight feels to the attacks. Can’t wait to dive in more and see more of the world.
Combat and movement feel floaty but I am hoping I get used to it. I have to break Bethesda habits as I am disappointed I can’t pick up everything and loot bodies like a graverobber. This is a personal gripe but the reactions to the godlike really, really annoy me. I’m not invested in the story yet as it feels like a retread of GreedFall. The world is pretty though. Not sold on this game but grateful to play on gamepass.
