Compulsion Games has today announced the launch date for South of Midnight, its upcoming southern folklore inspired adventure for Xbox Series X|S. We're finally getting hands on with this one on April 8th, 2025, and we're glad - because it looks bloody beautiful!
As part of the team's extended deep dive at Dev Direct, we've got another good look at the team's gorgeous stop-motion world here. This one looks like a rather unique action-adventure title for Xbox, and something we can all jump into day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
"In our story trailer, protagonist Hazel and her mother are preparing for the impending hurricane. The storm proves massive, causing catastrophic flooding-and causing their own home to be swept down river with her mother in it. Its aftermath shows the fictional town of Prospero, located in the southern United States, eerily calm while irrevocably changed from the hurricane’s destruction.
Here, Hazel undertakes a journey in search of her mother, while finding out more about herself and her family’s lineage in the process."
While this first-party Xbox title is releasing on XGP as usual, the team has also announced a paid early access option alongside today's fresh gameplay. The South of Midnight Premium Edition grants players early access from April 3rd - with the team also bundling in a bunch of digital extras with this early access version of the title.

Excited for SoM, Xbox fans? Talk to us about it down below.

That looks really cool, I’ll be playing that on GP day one!

This looks fantastic. Thought this was going to be later in the year so chuffed that it's a spring time release. The art style is brilliant.
This won't be for everyone but damn it's for me. It looks SO good!
I love the environmental design and the boss design, but not sold on stop motion. Someone said you could disable it? Nevertheless, I'll certainly give this a go.
@HonestHick I’m assuming you’re referring to Push Square as the other website? Funny, how your first thought is to mention Playstation after an Xbox showcase.
There may have been many cancellations, however don’t worry, Playstation gamers have been eating good every year since the console came out. Last year alone had Stellar Blade, Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, Helldivers 2, Silent Hill and Astro Bot to name a few.
I dont understand what you mean by seeing the difference?
@HonestHick three of them are coming to PS anyway, so aren’t exactly missing out?
Couldn’t you just be happy that it was a great show for Xbox? No need for console wars after that.

Can't believe I'm saying this...but why is the Base Game only 40$ US? It looks fabulous!
Game of the show for me.
@HonestHick
See the difference?
Yes Sir, I can see the difference. There are four more great looking games coming day one to GamePass. That's what you meant right?😉
This is the first sign of life I've seen that this console generation isn't dead. Pre-ordered, with the silly Premium content. 50$ well spent.
There's a typo in the trailer. It says "play day one on Game Pass".
@Xbox_Dashboard I wondered this as well! $40/£35 seems like a low price for this.

@PsBoxSwitchOwner its not console wars i make enough money to own all 3 and do so to fully support the industry and this hobby. However all the sites that bash Xbox and say they kill studios and don’t have vision etc etc. eat a little crow today. This was a great showing and we still have the big blockbuster June event to go. What is Sony going to show? Other than they can’t make a live service game and certain studios of theirs won’t be seen until PS6, so maybe one of us has to say who is ruining their studio’s with their agendas now? Someone outside of me and @Banjo has to stick up for Xbox a little bit especially after the month Sony has had. Hey it’s all in fun, we all own multiple consoles. Speaking for myself i want them all to be good, but this site rarely bashes their competition. Can you safely say that for the other website?
@Sol4ris absolutely, all the GP hate, Xbox is dead hate. Look at week Sony has had. 3 cancelled games. There are studios of PS’s now that we will very very likely not see until PS6. All the websites saying MS was foolish for spending 100 billion on all those studios etc etc. look at their ROADMAP for GP growing and growing by each show and again they still have the blockbuster June showcase to go. Owning all those studios year after year after year, GP is going to be a major industry force. But it takes time to grow. But the other websites now writes more articles on full price ports of games that Xbox players can get on a subscription than they do their own 1st party games cause Sony asked Bluepoint of all studios to make a GOW live service game. Then had a Sony ex say if you want more single player games than buy more remakes and remasters. Call me names if anyone on here wants to but i see a big DIFFERENCE starting. anyone else seeing better Value in Sony’s service plan?
@HonestHick I don't get the point. Playstation is always secretive about their roadmap, but end of the day they delivered more than 10 exclusives last year. Saying some didn't sell so well, is in my opinion a bit nitpicky. And may i say, quite ironic in a discussion between xbox and ps games.
It’s only natural for Xbox output to grow substantially after acquiring two of the biggest publishers in the world, not a real surprise there.
However i agree, i wish Playstation was more transparent with their roadmap, cause this doesnt work for me either. But even though Playstation has less studios, it hasn’t prevented them from delivering a good amount of games. Just as Astro bot was announced like two months before it came out, this year might still have many announcements waiting for us.
@LogicStrikesAgain I am not trying to be hard on you, but i disagree PS is always secretive with their roadmap. PS4 announced games 2-4 years before we ever got to play them. They are now cause they have nothing in pipeline ready to show. Saying they didn’t sell well is a direct reply to Xbox gamers don’t buy games, which sometimes isn’t a lie, but how is 1.5 million for Astro bot and other titles they bought such as stellar Blade a better example? As for the it’s only natural for Xbox to grow its pipeline and it not being a surprise, i totally agree, it’s what we all been saying since they did it. However that didn’t stop countless people talking mess about it. Today and i would imagine in June is going to further show how important and necessary a move it was. I don’t believe you will get a roadmap for PS cause they have countless studios starting over. We will see Wolverine and GOT at some point, other than that????????
@HonestHick Oh no, i didn't think you were. I’m truly just trying to understand the points you’re making so i can give a well thought out response.
I guess your main gripe is the future roadmap of only first party games right? (3rd party exclusives don't count?)
Well i have to agree with you, as of now, we don’t have a lot of release dates for first party ps games. But to be fair, before today those xbox games didn't have any release dates as well. So maybe wait till the next state of play and im sure their roadmap will be revealed a bit more.
What Playstation does is complement their ‘lack’ of first party games with 3rd party exclusives. So end of the day they still deliver in terms of games. I dont think people playing Helldivers 2, Stellar blade, Rebirth or Silent hill care if it’s first party or not, they’re just great games.
This looks really, really good. Looking forward to playing it day one!
I think this looks good but I really think if they add a early access a dlc should be added like the other early access they have been doing
@LogicStrikesAgain so spend money on games to take games away from other platforms only to sell less than what they dev could have made on PS, Xbox and PC? How long will that last. Well Square Enix say’s no longer. How much money does Sony have left to burn on titles that don’t perform. Remember before this it was Ghostwire Tokyo and deathloop. I think that is going to dry up, as Dev’s see more money being everywhere. What games does Sony have? Most of their big studio have all had games cancelled, sure we have intergalactic, thats a 2026 titles at the earliest. I stick to Wolverine and GOT. What else is there? Hoping MS gives them a ton of newer games for their players to spend $70 dollars on while GP players eat. Maybe buy a $700 dollar Pro console to get 3-5 more FPS on Doom? I mean look i love my PS5, this is just me being honest with where Sony is cause that story isn’t all that much told online seeing as they sell a lot of hardware units. Have a great past with PS4. Cool, i get it. But they have been a mess these last 2 years. They are lost on how to make a game that has reoccurring cash flows. Give them credit for trying but Bluepoint making a GOW live service is embarrassingly bad. While MS shows off ton’s of nice games with loads more waiting to reveal more footage in June! Just seems like this month was a start of a major flip. Don’t forget, if you want more PS single player game to buy your remasters and remakes. That is tight up there with if you don’t have internet just buy a 360!
@HonestHick
absolutely, all the GP hate, Xbox is dead hate. Look at week Sony has had. 3 cancelled games
I see your points, and what I find most peculiar is that the vast majority of GP hate /Xbox hate comes from a particular subset of [****] fan(boys)...Perhaps that's how they cope with it, the better GP becomes the more vitriolic the attacks, be it here or as you put it the other website.😅
@HonestHick I agree with you (and I stick up for Xbox too!).
Imagine if Xbox wasn’t mentioned on PushSquare. It would actually be crickets. But it is. All of the industry conversation seems to involve Xbox. But if you mention Playstation out of place people get a little upset.
There has to be concern at Playstation (and its shareholders) looking at this green tidal wave heading towards them. Since every Playstation player seems to want to play Xbox games on their “Pro” that they all seem to have; will they have any money left for actual Playstation Studios games? Indiana Jones, Ninja Gaiden 4, The Outer Worlds 2, Doom The Dark Ages, COD, etc it all adds up.
Either way what an awesome showcase (as usual!). I’ve been so interested in South of Midnight since that first trailer. Can’t wait!
The comments in every article of late really just devolves into people telling each other xbox is doing awesome (which it clearly isn't looking at sales data and that it was reported the whole division nearly got wrapped up) or people saying Sony have nothing to worry about (despite it sinking millions into games that will never see daylight, except one that only saw it for a week).
Can we not just all be grateful that we are still getting some good games to play, regardless of where you choose to play them, and just enjoy them.
Let’s stay on topic please ☺️
I've liked this since the original reveal, and I'll definitely pick it up. The setting is fresh and evocative, and it looks like the visual designers are onto something with the various creature and location designs. Right up my alley.
The choppy animations / Stop-motion effect is not great though. I understand that it is an artistic choice, but my eyes strain at the sight of it. Hopefully it'll be an easily-found option to turn it off in the settings.
@HonestHick Wow dude, you seem to go from here to there in the conversation. I think i’ll just let it go cause you’re obviously on a whole different mission here and i’ll let you to it. 😉
Honest advice, i feel like you’re having a bad time because as you said, what some people are saying on “the other site” about GP and Xbox. But you have to understand it goes both ways. And some Xbox users are very toxic on there as well. You should not let it get to you so much! Take care bro 👍🏼🫶🏼
@Sol4ris thank you buddy, that was my part of my point for sure. We the gamers always say show us the games. Nintendo plans to do that soon with the upcoming launch of switch 2. MS keeps doing it and Sony hasn’t. This ain’t fan boy stuff, this is a concern and maybe they should write more articles on that. Along with hey GP is looking solid early in 2025. 😊
@K1LLEGAL 100% and as for sticking up for Xbox, i always rip them when they do something wrong. It’s the way it should be but they don’t like that on the other website. Sony share holders need to ask why did you put a single player studio known for remasters and remakes on a live service single player game? That is bozo the clown management stuff there.
@LogicStrikesAgain i was replying to your points. All is good 😊
So looking forward to this game. This and Assassin’s Creed Shadows are my most anticipated non Nintendo games this year.
