We've got some fresh Gears of War: E-Day news to report! It's been announced today by development studio People Can Fly that the company is partnering with The Coalition on the upcoming prequel that's set to arrive in 2025 or 2026.
You may remember the name "People Can Fly" because of the 2022 Xbox Game Pass title Outriders, or perhaps 2011's Bulletstorm... but it's most likely because the studio developed Gears of War: Judgment back in the day.
Here's what the team had to say in a statement following today's announcement:
"We are honored to return to the world of Gears of War, a franchise deeply embedded in our studio’s history. As lead developer of the iconic Gears of War: Judgment and co-development partner on Gears of War 1-3, we have always been passionate about the series and its legacy."
This sounds like a very exciting prospect to us, and the only thing that would have made it better is a hint of when to expect more details on the game... but alas, that wasn't to be. We probably won't hear much until the summer.
In terms of a release date, we mentioned earlier how Gears of War: E-Day has been rumoured for a 2025 launch in the past, but it feels unlikely now considering how busy the Xbox first-party slate appears to be. You never know though!
Happy to see People Can Fly joining The Coalition on this? Tell us down in the comments below.

If People Can Fly is just now announcing this partnership, that presumably means that they've just started their portion of the game's development. Sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing Gears of War: E-Day until summer 2026 at the earliest. And if the rumor about the next Xbox releasing in 2026 turns out to be true, then Gears of War: E-Day could even be a cross-gen launch title for it.
I've said it many times now, E-Day will be a launch title for the Prime, and that the Prime will launch in 2026. It will, of course, be a cross-generation title for the Series consoles.
E-Day will be given a full reveal in this Summer's Xbox Showcase, and as is usually the case, the game will release a year later.
As for the Prime, I suspect that will be revealed in full at this years Game Awards Show...
Very happy with this. They're a very competent developer imo. I wonder what they're onboard for exactly? Surely it's a little late in the cycle for anything too hands-on?
Keep in mind that just because they're only being announced now, it doesn't mean they haven't been working on it silently for weeks / months / years.
@Fiendish-Beaver
I’m glad you have it all worked out.
Let’s see what happens 🤣
Always thought people can fly might a studio that Xbox would buy one day.
@Fiendish-Beaver jez cordon said the rumors of the Xbox prime aren’t true
It was reported a while ago that they were working on an unannounced Xbox exclusive. I wonder if this was that?
@Prestige-worldwide Jez Cordon talks an awful lot though in fairness
Prime is just the first name we can latch on to, @Prestige-worldwide. Whether it is the Prime or the NeXtBoX is irrelevant. The Prime will do for now until we have something more concrete. For now, I'll stick with the Prime as Microsoft are either working on something, or they're not, and in that regard, it matters not what it is called...
I could be wrong but I don’t think was just the name that he was saying was false but also the date, I think the console will come out in 2027 and elder scrolls 6 will be the launch title
@Ricky-Spanish he does but lately a lot that he has said has been true and he does have the connections needed for them
Don't let them touch the multiplayer
Dose makes me wonder why they are needed, is the collation just incapable of making a Gears game on their own, or are they doing something else?
Like maybe E-Day is more akin Wolfenstein Youngblood, where another studio makes a side entry whilst the actual studio is working on their next project (one assumes Gears 6)
@FatGuyInLilCoat Agreed, though to be fair to them, the MP stuff they did with Judgement was the same thing I heard people saying they wanted when playing Gears 1-3 multiplayer.
They still should have known better, mind but it was ideas plenty of people seemed to have.
What are the coalition doing? Why do they need another dev to help make the next gears game? Seems bizarre to me and I won’t lie, lowers my expectations somewhat.
@Isolte I quite enjoyed 4, 5 was good but less enjoyable imo but both are worth playing I’d say.
Hivebusters, a short standalone, is also worth playing, it nails gears more than 5 did in its whole campaign.
I feel this huge, massive, announcement. They make games that handle violence perfectly. Bulletstorm and Outriders are amazing examples that always made me giddy lol
@FraserG Absolutely agree with your thoughts. But....
How leaks are constant and the norm nowadays, I'm heavily leaning toward they just got their feet in door not that long ago.
@Isolte I don't know. I thought Gears of War: Judgment was pretty good, but I would say that each entry after 3 has gotten progressively worse, to the point where I couldn't even bring myself to finish 5.
Hopefully they can turn things around with E-Day.
@Isolte Mixed bag. 4s campaign was the textbook definition of bland IMO, and I found 5 far worse. I say that as someone who adored the original trilogy and even have all of the books. (4s multiplayer was smooth as butter though. Great time.)
Of course you might like them, and if you have gamepass then you should at least give 4 a go. Despite my naysaying you might end up loving them, and if you do that's great.
I did mostly enjoy Gears Tactics too, it's a prequel turn based strategy game like XCOM that takes place during the original trilogy. Very fun. Some of the campaign cutscenes are obnoxious but the gameplay itself is really good and still manages to feel like Gears.
@InJeffable
I think Judgement was a really good multi-player and co-op game, but as a campaign story I really felt it was weak sauce. One, it was really short, and two it felt like they took multi-player games types and strung them together to make a campaign story.
I think the best Gears stories were the first three. I felt four was a milking exercise, and I felt 5 boldly tried new things that didn't work the best but at least they tried.
I hope E-Day goes more back to Gears roots. Gritty story, gritty and technical gameplay, and awesome multi-player where horde mode is really, really fun!
@Isolte yea for sure play 4, 5 and hivebusters dlc for 5th.
For gears 4, have more patience thru 1st act. It starts little slow and boring but picks up in act 2
I didn't mind Judgement and still got to play more of Bulletstorm.
Outriders is ok....
Will see how they go with E Day then and whatever Coalition has in store otherwise.
Multiplayer? Side content? Assistance with the project besides just working on it and when we hear about things as late as they are. Hmm, whatever ends up being the case of this game.
@Isolte I would definitely also recommend at least a peek at Gears Tactics. You might not like the gameplay, but it does feel like a game right out of the "prime" era of Gears.
@Fenbops Apparently also have become kind of a support studio for other Xbox teams using Unreal Engine. Which makes sense because a lot of the staff at Coalition came from Epic with the migration.
They know how to make the engine sing.
Outriders was great and people poopoo'ed on it too much. My custom character was very memorable and I enjoyed the combination of Gears style gameplay with Shadow of Mordor style powers. Think it makes total sense they work on Gears.
@Fenbops @abe_hikura AAA game development is a massive multi studio endeavor especially if you want to get the game out in less than 6 years…
@AverageGamer I get that development has gotten "that" but I simply cannot accept that a series that is, as a huge fan of the series, a collection of corridors. Now takes two studios almost an console generation to produce 1 title.
Now I know games like the Like A Dragon (lot of reuse), or Sniper Elite (not AAA), and overlapping development of the CoD and AC games are definitely make it seem worse but "2 studios= once a gen gears" seems like it should be a massive alarm bell for the industry.
@AverageGamer I’m not sure I agree. Even if that was the case, Gears 5 was released in 2019 and all we’ve had since was Hivebusters and an E-day trailer last year, which we now know they aren’t working on alone. I know they’ve helped on other projects like Halo Infinite but still, there are questions as to what they’ve been working on in the 5 or so years since Gears 5.
I hope Gears 1-3 on unreal engine 5 but who knows they’ve shown nothing.
@abe_hikura " I simply cannot accept that a series that is, as a huge fan of the series, a collection of corridors"
WOW! What a massive simplification of what actually goes into developing a multi platform AAA title that needs a ton of high quality assets created, voice acting, sound design, proper support for multiplayer.... etc
"seems like it should be a massive alarm bell for the industry."
Developers have been complain about the high development cost, and long development time for the last 10 years. These companies just don't care since it always about chasing ever increasing profit.
@Fenbops " I know they’ve helped on other projects like Halo Infinite but still, there are questions as to what they’ve been working on in the 5 or so years since Gears 5."
They already report that they had cancel two projects they was working before they announced E-Day, but they also developed the Matrix Awakens that released in 2021.
