After the stacked Xbox Developer Direct event last week, Xbox is an amazing position when it comes to its first-party slate for early 2025, and with the likes of Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 still to come, late 2025 could be incredible too.
Of course, the rumours are always flying around about what else could be in store for the year, and The Verge's Tom Warren casually namedropped four titles last week - two of which were apparently being prepared for 2025 last year.
The first of these games is Gears of War: E-Day, which Warren says was being "planned" for 2025 at some point in 2024, but he's no longer sure whether it's still targeting the same window. The other is the much-rumoured remake for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which he says was targeting late spring or early summer 2025 at some point last year.
"In recent weeks, rumors have pointed toward a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I first heard about this remaster last year, and at the time, Microsoft was tentatively targeting a release in late spring or early summer 2025."
"It will also be interesting to see if Gears of War: E-Day will make the 2025 release date I'd heard Microsoft was planning for last year."
As for the other two, Warren questions whether Avalanche Studios' Contraband or inXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution will show up at the Xbox Games Showcase in the summer, although there's no suggestion either of these will release in 2025. Still, it's been a while since we last saw them, so hopefully they're coming along well!
It should be made clear that these are just potential surprises and are by no means confirmed (in fact, Warren doesn't seem overly sure about any of them), and there may be surprises that we don't actually know anything about yet.
The main takeaway for us is that the Oblivion remake (or remaster) is almost certainly the real deal and we'll be seeing it eventually, while Gears of War: E-Day could arrive in 2025, but it seems more likely that it'll get pushed to 2026. It might even be that Microsoft is waiting to see if GTA 6 gets delayed - that could have a big impact on it!

There's no need for gears E day this year. Better off 2026 earliest with gameplay at the summer games show and then again at the dev direct in jan
Oblivion this year. Everything else 2026 in my opinion. I mean, in terms of releases.
Hopefully gears drops this year considering how long it's been since the last game and they have a dedicated studio who's soul focus to make gears of war games and nothing else I'd be very surprised and let down if E Day didn't drop this year what else have the coalition been doing since gears tactics dropped if not??🤷
Gears E day isnt making 2025.
Will the Wu Tang Clan game that xbox is publishing get revealed this summer? It was rumored to be 1-2 years away from release in 2023.
I want State of Decay 3 to show some signs of life finally… Otherwise I’m down for quite a few Xbox games this year.
There are still games announced before the Series X was even released to show up.
It really is about time we saw more of Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3 and the Rare game (the name escapes me right now).
Still hard to deny Xbox has a lot in the pipeline and fingers crossed that steady stream of games they have been hinting at starts to really roll this year!
Let them keep Gears E-Day for the next Xbox console, it will be the best system seller.
2025 is going to be an outstanding year. We're already getting so much for the first half a year alone, and once that's over, we have Q3 and Q4 to look forward to with whatever else is in the pipeline. The summer showcase is gunna be epic.
Clockwork Revolution has my interest, sadly I’m sensing 2026 for its release.
Also Fable.. please be this year..
As much as I’d like to see these games this year 2025 is already stacked I think they should push the games to 2026
I think E-Day would be Spring 2026 so it can avoid clashing with Halo and CoD. That said, I also think GTA6 will be delayed to 2026 so they'd want to avoid that as well.
With just a pre-rendered trailer I don’t see high chance of Gears this year. Now I certainly wouldn’t complain, but I don’t feel it’s likely.
@Ricky-Spanish The Coalition cancelled two unannounced smaller projects in February 2023, maybe that's why it's been some time
@vrubayka It's far to long for me for another gears game they are nearly in Bethesda territory at this stage!
In Destin interview, Phil Spencer guarantees: not all Xbox games will be released on other platforms: https://x.com/Xcension/status/1883944660298784816
@BacklogBrad what games This? Looks like I missed it completely 😭
@Ricky-Spanish Well, I know they've been helping some of Microsoft's other studios out. Redfall got some help to get the game to run better for example via people from both Rare and The Coalition among others.
I'm sure hoping Gears E-Day releases this year. It's been so long waiting for a new one. If not there are still plenty of exciting games coming this year. It's about dang time we have some first party releases.
