Over the last week or two, we've seen multiple Call of Duty titles get ported over to the Microsoft Store on PC, which is a good sign that they're likely being prepared for Xbox Game Pass at some stage. While we still don't have any confirmed XGP dates for those seven COD titles, another one has now appeared on the storefront - and it could turn out to be the most popular of the bunch.
Yep, late last night, 2012's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 made its debut on the Microsoft Store for PC. At the time of writing, the 360 version of BO2 is in the top 25 paid Xbox games in both the US and the UK - so it's safe that say that its Game Pass release would be probably go down pretty well on the platform.
As we've mentioned before while covering these Microsoft Store PC drops, there's no real timeline on when this bunch of old ActiBlizz games will come to Xbox Game Pass. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy received a Microsoft Store PC release in April and it took until November for it to hit Xbox Game Pass, while Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 received a new PC release in June but it hasn't yet arrived on the service.
Still, it usually is a sign that the game will come to the library at some point, so we can expect to see Black Ops 2 — alongside a bunch of other classic COD games — come to Xbox Game Pass in 2025.
Would you jump back into Black Ops 2 if it came to Xbox Game Pass? Tell us your thoughts down below!

Why are Microsoft more than happy to launch games into PC Game Pass before they’re on XSX, but never the other way around? I do notice this Microsoft and it’s an eyebrow-raising trend when you consider the price differential of Game Pass between XSX and PC.
@Cakefish This one isn't on PC Game Pass yet, it's just received a PC version in anticipation of an upcoming Game Pass release.
The most likely scenario is that they'll put these classic Call of Duty titles on console and PC Game Pass at the same time.
So they have not been on pc at all ??
Well MS , time to give us a nice Christmas present by putting them up on gamepass this holiday season.
@FraserG it’s just that as you point out in the article it always seems to be a necessary first step to a game being added to Game Pass Ultimate.
I get that Microsoft wants to promote Play Anywhere and I think that’s absolutely a great thing and I really wish the whole Xbox library had Play Anywhere.
It just seems a bit like a double standard when games show up on PC Game Pass long before any XSX equivalent. Flight Sim 2020, Age of Empires, Death Stranding, Cities Skylines 2, and I think they had Total War at one point etc.
Maybe I’m missing all the console only launches but I follow the Game Pass update articles closely and I can’t recall seeing any for a very long time.
@Sol76 They've been on Steam / the ActiBlizz launcher etc but not the Microsoft Store - which is where you access PC Game Pass content.
@Sol76 Just haven't had a Microsoft Store version of the game.
A lot of publishers don't release on Microsoft Store - which is a requirement for a game to be on PC Game Pass.
Activision games only started hitting Microsoft Store after it was acquired by Microsoft.
Capcom games only show up on the service when a game releases on Game Pass PC.
I don't think Bandai Namco releases on Microsoft Store unless the game is/was on Game Pass PC, either.
Microsoft Store is a pariah on PC - which is probably part of the reason why Game Pass PC hasn't been overly successful.
I bet, if Microsoft and Valve came to agreement where Steam versions can be downloaded, it would get more subscriptions.
I really want them to bring Tony Hawk 1+2 to game pass.. I've been holding off buying it for that reason... Gunna just keep holding off!
@Cakefish Yeah, I know what you mean. These days they've gotten a lot better at limiting the PC-only additions, but it does still happen on occasion.
I hope that Play Anywhere and releasing games on the Windows Store and both Game Pass platforms is leading Microsoft to a single store and Windows interface for consoles and PCs in the near future. The future of Xbox is console and PC together and should be as simple as possible. They already share save files and purchases which are the two most important things for consumers.
@Cakefish it’s a numbers thing.
They are hitting the limit of GPU subscribers on console (I believe last figures said console made up over 50% of gp users).
So they give more to PC gamers to try and sway them away from steam etc as PC is more than likely a faster growing area for gamepass
@Cakefish I think there was an article from Phil Spencer somewhere where he recently said all the growth is on PC and they want to be there more. MS really just want us to move over to PC which to be fair, is a slight hassle and more expensive but it'll be where a lot of stuff is getting released first. We are getting abandoned slowly but surely & I love my Xbox so here's hoping they double down on console and this is just a bad phase. Time will tell.
I wouldn't jump back to BO2 if it came to Game Pass. I played and finished the Campaign and have ALL the DLC Maps and a few 'Cosmetic' bundles too for BO2 but wouldn't play on my Series X if it came to Back Compat - let alone Game Pass.
I loved the MP and, if I remember Correctly, reached max Prestige, max level so not much reason to jump back for its MP - that's assuming there would be enough people to fill the Lobbies to make every game mode and map playable - but unless they also give Everyone the DLC Maps, I can see some modes and maps never working. It never had Cross Play so was 'locked' to the 360 player base, so unless they bring the PC version to Xbox, or maybe update the Original, the player numbers could be 'limited' and impact the matchmaking. Let alone the fact these games don't have 'modern' anti-cheats, I think the memories will be better if I don't revisit it...
Zombies and the DLC Zombies Maps would perhaps give me a reason to play BO2 specifically, But I have Zombies Chronicles DLC with BO3 and haven't played that in at least 5yrs.
Man Black Ops 2 was so peak…Black Ops 3 tho was trash such a let down
While nice for PC players to get them on Gamepass and the others on Steam or Windows store or whichever over time. For the Classic 1st game/Expansion and more I've been waiting for the early ones that are console releases for a while now.
So if they wanted digital or physical but to play them back compat I already own them on PS2 now (Big Red One, Finest Hour), 3 on PS3, I'll get COD 2 eventually, but because they took too long to offer the Xbox versions when I could have bought them and used their console even if they didn't get my digital money but other peoples. Their loss.
But again for PC players this is great to see but for console wise, we have had to wait too long.
In that time if I get Singularity, Fracture, Inversion and more before they put them on Gamepass/Back Compat then sure. I know Singularity and Timeshift are offered and I think disk only not digital which is fine by me.
That and cough Pitfall Lost Expedition (do something with it seriously, even make a new one besides Indy games, like do something, also it is a good enough easy to 100% 3D Metroidvania of the era too but like they or anyone else cares anyway) or anything else Activison then sure take that time but I've got pickups to work out and they don't want my money anyway so......... Like it matters. If they want hours/usage of their console then money well...
I mean I'm not buying digital so it isn't going to them anyways. Just console usage that's pretty much all that happens here that differs besides the enhancements.
Old CoD doesn’t seem appealing but maybe that’s me.
Already have it anyways but it’s good they will have Black Ops 2 on game pass and just in time for the year it’s set in also!
Don't care, just release either games that have been delisted (Activision Marvel or Transformers games) or actual new games to the Xbox ecosystem.
still not the backwards compatible games I'm waiting for, which are mainly 4 games, and that's Magna Carta 2, Dust an elysian tail, and The Dishwasher series
I'll wait for more of the games to come to GP so I can at least play through the campaigns.
@BAMozzy it's already back compatible😂😂
