Back in early December, we highlighted the six games that were nominated as the best Xbox titles of the year as part of the IGN Awards 2024, as well as the 14 games that were up for the biggest award of all - Game of the Year.
We didn't know the results at the time, but now we do! And, when it comes to the overall Game of the Year, Xbox finished in a "runner-up" spot with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, while Metaphor: ReFantazio ended up taking the big prize.
Here's how it ended:
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Runner-Up)
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Runner-Up)
- Helldivers 2 (Runner-Up)
- Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth (Runner-Up)
- Astro Bot (Runner-Up)
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard (Runner-Up)
- Balatro (Runner-Up)
- Metaphor: ReFantazio (Winner)
Interestingly, looking at the fan votes on IGN's website, Black Myth: Wukong was the top pick for the Game of the Year award, which IGN only highlighted as an "honourable mention". The IGN Awards are voted on by the outlet's content team, but if they were based around votes on the website, Indiana Jones would have finished in fourth place.
Beyond that, Indiana Jones inevitably took home the "Best Xbox Game" award as well. Dungeons Of Hinterberg and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 were originally nominated, but missed out on the "Runner-Up" spots. Here's the list:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Runner-Up)
- STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl (Runner-Up)
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (Runner-Up)
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Winner)
There are loads of other winners that were crowned as part of the IGN Awards 2024, so it's well worth a browse if you want to check out the full selection. Indiana Jones did make a "Runner-Up" appearance a few more times, but its only victory was in the "Best Xbox Game" section.
In terms of the GOTY win for Metaphor: ReFantazio, we have absolutely no issues with that! Atlus and SEGA delivered something outstanding with that game back in October - we even gave it a very rare 10/10 score here at Pure Xbox!

@Ricky-Spanish
On what planet are Atlus games "child's games"?
Runner up is just a polite way of saying loser, not the winner, thank you for trying but you ain't it.
@TeiGekiLord My bad 😂
Just saw that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was Eurogamer’s GoTY beating out Astro Blast, which finished second. Metaphor was only #10 on their list, which is way too low for me.
Right now I’m going with:
1) Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
2) Metaphor: Refantazio
3) Astro Bot
I have a lot of competition for the rest of my top 10 so still figuring that out.
I'm playing Metaphor right now and it's really good. The story and setting are pretty dark so far.
My GOTY is still Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth but Metaphor could end up second.

You joking right? A MacineGames Missfire wins GoTY and is also a runner up on different gaming website.....I'm always up for future MacineGames Missfire's😉.
@Sol4ris Yep, good idea when we’re being asked what we want to see more of from Xbox — more MachineGames Misfires please!!! 😀
@Sol4ris To be fair, at least one of the bajillion publications IGN owns, Pure Xbox and Eurogamer being some of them, was bound to give it GOTY.
Game was fantastic start to finish. First game I 100% in a whiiiiiiiile. Hyped for the DLC.
@InterceptorAlpha Sammy said they are still independent sites, unlike RPS and Eurogamer
Think he mentioned it a few days ago on PS
Lol no. Just no.
Very IGN, picked absolute losers.
IGN = IGNorant
I liked indiana jones more than Astrobot as that game just did more of the same that it did in the previous astrobot games that didnt win game of the year

@awp69 what is Astro "Blast"
@Jark Lol. Sorry I was under the influence of pain medicine from surgery I had yesterday and that slipped through. Corrected!
@johnedwin1969
did xbox pay ign for indiana jones to wind up in second place
Yes they did, alas the dreaded Xbox tax couldn't be avoided😅.....
Edit: Before anyone gets their undergarments into a twist, I'm jesting.

@Sol4ris You may jest but the game's initial reveal had a total garbage reaction, then they announced it was multiplat and it's been nothing but hype and high praise for the game ever since.
@Jenkinss
Good thing then Indy turned out an absolute corker of a game.
Nothing better than seeing the hypocrisy coming a mile off😉.
It's IGN. They lost credibility twelve years ago. I didn't know anyone really still followed them

@Ricky-Spanish who the heck is "the internet"
@neoxmahi obviously they are followed in droves based on their engagement on every website they operate on — including their own. Don't even have to crunch numbers to get the gist.
@Sol4ris What hypocrisy are you talking about?
That can only be measured for one individual or a cohesive collective at a time, not from one entity to another. As in, if I advocate something and do its negation behind everyone's back, I am a hypocrite on that thing; if random jagoff does the negation despite me being the advocate for the thing, then there's no hypocrisy — even if we're in the same household. I would need to empower the random jagoff to speak on my behalf, like a leader or boss does, and even then (and they then wouldn't be random, either).
And what was the issue anyway? That the game wouldn't be multiplatform even though for several years now people were warning each other that Microsoft could possibly open up some IP (various) or lock down others to exclusivity (Starfield)?
Are you asserting that multiplatform or exclusive games have tendencies to exhibit whatever issues are being alluded to, and that Indy didn't? Vice versa? I followed this game for a while and didn't anticipate problems with it. This discussion isn't elucidating any ambiguity either.
Wth is corker, btw?
@VoidPunk Only loser here seems to be you. Most of their runner ups were fantastic games
@trev666 Indiana Jones is nothing more than a Wolfenstein reskin. And the reason the previous Astro Bot games didn't win GOTY was because they were short tech demos and VR games.
@Jenkinss Hype around a game increases when more people can play it? Nooooo way! 🤯
@Sol4ris What hypocrisy are you referring to?
@PSDeckSwitchOwner woooosh
@Jenkinss ???
