2024. You piece of trash. Your time has come.
Yes, it's the end of another year on this planet we're all involuntarily stuck to, and it's been another fairly atrocious one all round, truth be told. Whether its within the games industry itself, which is currently being eaten alive by straight-up greed, or on the world stage where our politicians are showing off just how craven they really are, things are somewhat dark right now. We are officially in the dark timeline, and then some.
However, and on a more positive note, good games have very much still happened over the past twelve months, even if Xbox itself hasn't necessarily had the best of years in terms of exclusives. High points in 2024 have included the likes of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Animal Well, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and the mighty Dragon's Dogma 2.
We've also had proper heavy-hitters in the form of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Stalker 2, Black Ops 6, Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Indiana Jones & The Great Circle, all of which have been reviewed and received well for the most part. And the indie scene, too - as per usual - has been a nonstop parade of Very Good Stuff Indeed. (Balatro, you have ruined my life).
Of course, as is customary at this time of the year, a few weeks back, we asked you fine folks to cast your votes for Pure Xbox's Game of 2024. And so, with those votes now cast, and the results having been weighed and sorted via a complex system of levers and pulleys here at PX Towers, it's time to reveal our top ten for the year what was Two Thousand and Twenty Four!
Let's jump in!
10. Death Stranding Director's Cut (Xbox Series X|S)
What a delight it is to finally have Hideo Kojima's post-apocalyptic masterpiece on Xbox consoles. Yep, we said "masterpiece", and we backed that claim up with a 10/10 score when we revisited the game earlier in the year.
With flawless performance, and visuals that we swear are getting better with age, Death Stranding Director's Cut is the ultimate version of one of the most unique and powerful games we've played. In fact *whisper it* some of us actually prefer this over any of the MGS series. As we said in our review;
"Death Stranding Director's Cut is a phenomenal experience that, five years on, is still as incredible - mechanically, narratively and graphically, as ever. A top-notch cast do their best with what is an admittedly bonkers story (bonkers in all the best Kojima ways, you understand), whilst this incredibly haunting world, this emotional tale and its characters, absolutely hook you in for one of the most memorable journeys of the past few console cycles. It's so good to see this masterpiece finally arrive on Xbox."
9. Star Wars Outlaws (Xbox Series X|S)
We didn't expect it in the slightest, but Star Wars Outlaws is an absolute banger as far as we're concerned.
Coming at this one expecting some shoddy half-relation to Jedi Survivor is the wrong way to go - as it turns out, as Kay's adventure takes an entirely different route through the Star Wars universe. This is stealth-centric stuff, Deus Ex mashed with everyone's favourite sci-fi franchise, with a little Splinter Cell sprinkled on top. It shouldn't work as well as it does, perhaps, but tight controls, excellent writing and top voicework combine with a smarter style of Ubi-collectathon for a surprisingly great slice of SW. As we said in our review;
"Star Wars Outlaws has been a thoroughly welcome surprise. We expected a great big open world dullard of a thing, but instead we've got clever stealth systems, excellent level design, fun combat and a wise refining of the usual collectathon and busywork mechanics. Kay Vess and Nix make a highly competent stealth/death squad, the whole thing looks and sounds great and you even get to take off from planets, fly into space and blow stuff up. What it lacks in new mechanics or originality in gameplay, it makes up for with vibes. It's got it where it counts, kid."
8. Dragon Age: The Veilguard (Xbox Series X|S)
It felt - to us at least - as though Dragon Age: The Veilguard sort of just arrived out of nowhere this year. It got a little lost in the mix, we ain't gonna lie.
However, once you've settled down with this belter, it's not long before you're reminded of why Dragon Age is so bloody great, so beloved by so many for so long. Another incredible cast of characters lights up a fantastical world full of magic mirrors and wonderfully warped landscapes in an adventure that goes all-out on the action front.
Some may baulk at the cutting back on decision-making and the shorter, sharper tone to the conversations in general, but it makes for a thrilling time while it lasts. This is a big, bombastic return, as we said in our review;
"Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a triumphant return to form for BioWare. This is a top-class action-RPG that lives up to the Dragon-Age name whilst laying to rest the ghosts of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. With a roster of amazing companions to recruit, a mind-bending world full of exquisite regions to explore, and combat that raises the bar in every possible way for the franchise, this is the good stuff, thank you very much. We were worried, for sure — it's been a long time since the glory of Inquisition — but we've been served a follow-up here that improves on 2014's game in every way - and that's really saying something. How very exciting!"
7. Metaphor: ReFantazio (Xbox Series X|S)
Atlus has gotta be out of its mind thinking it can make another game, one so similar to the mighty Persona 5, that's in any way fit to lick that masterpiece's booWROOOOONG!
It's sort of hard to believe just how good Metaphor: Refantazio is, coming so soon off the back of some of the studio's best work in the Persona franchise. It may look overwhelmingly similar - and it is, in many ways - but this romp across Euchronia is enough of its own thing, too, and a must-play for any Persona fan. As we said in our review;
"Metaphor: ReFantazio is the team behind the best of the Persona series at the very top of their game. We were a little concerned we were in for a quick reskin of Joker's past glories, if we're being fully honest (we'd probably still have gobbled that up, let's face it), but what we've actually ended up with is a monumental JRPG. This is a coming together of everything that's been learned, honed and perfected over the years, presented through a phenomenal core narrative that's full of emotion and hope, amazing characters, some of the most warped enemy designs we've ever seen, and enough slick combat and style to do us until they make the next one. They better be making the next one already."
6. Dragon's Dogma 2 (Xbox Series X|S)
Dreams, as it turns out, do come true. Like, 10/10 levels of true.
Dragon's Dogma 2 was something that seemed too good to be real, in all honesty, when it was announced. Surely we weren't gonna get a follow-up to one of our favourite off-kilter RPGs of all time, and then have it be flippin' good and everything into the bargain?
Well, that's exactly what happened, mate, with Capcom continuing a tremendous run-of-form in a sequel that stole our hearts. As we said in our glowing review earlier in the year;
"Dragon's Dogma fans rejoice! This second entry in the series, as much a remake as it is a sequel, absolutely nails everything it sets out to achieve. You can feel the desire to perfect every aspect of the game that we got in 2012 here, with slicker combat, a more engaging pawn system, an incredible world stuffed full of amazing beasties and a general vibe that just begs you to slow down, take your time, and enjoy the majestic adventure ahead. If you're in the market for a fantastic RPG with the power to fully transport you to a world of gritty fantasy and magical friends, we reckon this might just be right up your street."

Surprisingly strong showings for Veilguard and Outlaws, which probably mostly just shows how few games got any kind of serious traction this year.
@Vordus I haven't played either, but I feel like Star Wars Outlaws and Dragon Age: The Veilguard will both be remembered and spoken about more fondly as time goes on. Nine times out of ten in gaming, the vocal minority makes things out to be far worse than they actually are, while you hear next to nothing from the majority because they're just playing games and enjoying them.
I can't take seriously a list that doesn't have Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
I guess that shows how little I have in common with the majority of gamers (at least here).
@Markatron84 Oh absolutely, and there are so many reasons past the outrage economy as to why they underperformed. Outlaws seems perfectly amicable but is a title from a fatigued franchise presented in the house style of a fatigued publisher, so it basically struggled to garner any kind of enthusiasm at the time. Veilguard definitely felt more like EA just wanted to get a finished product out of the door without killing the franchise or the studio than it did a triple-A launch of old. Honestly, from what I gather it turned out far better than 10 years of development hell would suggest, but it certainly didn't generate the kind of buzz you'd normally associate with a big franchise release.
The fact that neither of us has played either game (though I bet we're both holding out for Veilguard on EA Play) feels kind of appropriate in this case. But hey, still got a bigger audience than all but 7 games on the system, if the polling sample is to be believed.
I would have moved Metaphor to #2 behind Indy. Otherwise the list is pretty solid the way it is IMO. Glad the readers overlooked some doozies of reviews (that were outliers among critics - not just us lowly readers) to give games the recognition they truly deserve.
Well done Indy and well deserved my number one vote and still playing the game.
The top two both big AAA blockbuster games.
Goes to show we love them as well at Xbox.
It’s the big AAA that count.
Hm. We have odd taste.
It’s nice to see pure Xbox, get done on the number spot. Merry Christmas 🎄 🤣🤣
@Lup same. I’m used to it!
I find veilguard and outlaws being on this list offensive
It’s no shock that Indy won it, though how crazy is it to see CoD at #2 after years… no… decades now… of being a game for casuals. Back on Indy though, it just goes to show how patchy the year was before Indy that it dominated so thoroughly. This has been the most divisive year in gaming I think I’ve ever experienced. It sure doesn’t feel like much has united the gamer-base this year across the platforms. Indy was like a breath of fresh air for being a game everyone seemed to like on Xbox (Xbox’s Astro Bot, basically).
@Lup Seriously! One of the highest rated games all year and not a single peep. Ichiban Kasuga deserves better than this!
@Vordus I have no interest in Veilguard 🤣 Outlaws I may look into in a sale down the line. To be honest, I play very few newly released games nowadays; I've gotten to the point where I'm happy to wait months, if not years, to play something. The only games released in 2024 I can recall playing are Thank Goodness You're Here! (because my wife bought it day one), Helldivers 2 and the free trial of Black Ops 6.
Everything seems decently placed in the 1-10 with the exception of CoD. I suppose this is to pacify all the low level “gamers” who spend countless hours running around in circles killing, dying and repeating. How that could compare to a technical showpiece or masterfully crafted narrative like what’s on show in Indy or Hellblade2 or Metaphor is nonsensical.
@PJOReilly Thank you. It's nice to see a second opinion on Indy. I get it's not some people's vibe and I respect that. Have a happy holiday!
I wonder what will finish second to GTA this time next year??
@Balaam_ Just because people enjoy cod it doesn't make them low level gamers it's Christmas man don't be like that!
It’s great to see Indy take the number one spot considering the review it received here. I would personally put it number one or two — a competition between that and Stalker 2. I need to properly start Metaphor to see where I would rank it. I’m also surprised by the lack of Persona 3 Reload.
Definitely a good year for gaming considering this generations fairly underwhelming early years. Everyone will have their own list. Still Wakes the Deep and Lorelai and the Laser Eyes are certainly on mine.
I'd also argue it's been a pretty great year for 'fake Christian' conservatives/undereducated, gullible and selfish dimwits.
Ah Indiana Jones. So close to my number 1. Too bad it's not as good as SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS BABY!!!! Honestly a classic skill issue for Machine Games.
For games played on Xbox its a pretty easy win for Indy for me, amazing game Also enjoyed Hellblade 2. And nice to see some love for SW Outlaws 🙂
Nothing comes close to Space Marine 2, in my opinion. It's much more fun to play than anything else on the list. Stalker being ahead of it is ridiculous.
@Lup Agree. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Is awesome
The only truly bad call for this list was Outlaws being on this list when other games Tekken 8 or Like a Dragon infinite wealth which are way better didn’t make the list.
Whew. Wow. That first sentence/paragraph is exactly how Xbox makes their consumers feel. Wow
But really, though. Call of Duty is number 2? Sony didn't suffer from the Activision acquisition. Jim Ryan put up a big old fight and fuss over it but, an annual game every year like that just like Assassins Creed. It was neat at first but now, it's repetitive as anything.
Also, what the frick? Even Senuas Sacrifice gets an 8 and The Great Circle gets, what was it a 7.6 and it wins Game of the Year? Shouldn't a Game of the Year get a solid score above everything else. This is the epitome of Xbots screaming for Xbox to stay. Snapping at everything, making a dump in a box seem like a tremendous masterpiece.
Let's be honest with ourselves here because, what else have we got? If you can't be honest with yourself, what else have you got? You can't and shouldn't lie to yourself. Xbox blew it, they're done. Sheamus Blackley wanted something great when the rest of Microsoft didn't. It was that big of a fight but he got it going. Xbox 360 came along and they built on the momentum. But it got to the point where suits ran Xbox and got greedy. They didn't think about what you wanted, what was best for you and still don't. They just want to pick your pocket and spent $69 billion when they didn't have to, they overpaid to keep Sony from intervening, showing you the relationship Sony has with devs, and now you the customers are paying for it and Xbox is now trying to leech off of Sonys customers to pay off Activision. It backfired in Xbox's face.
Look, I was there once. You know how it feels, even to this day, for a long time SEGA fan to see Sonic on a Nintendo console, even worse when it's exclusive to that Nintendo console? I had to sit and watch SEGA shut it down. SEGAs gone. Fans in denial can say what they will, but Sammy isn't SEGA. SEGA was different a long time ago and when you finally have all the information and can look back on it, an awesome little documentary called CONSOLE WARS sheds some light. Sega of America and Sega of Japan had serious issues. They were at odds all the time and couldn't be on the same page. It frustrated businesses that wanted to sell their product and Japans ego caused major problems. Whether the 32X contributed to the demise or whether it was the animosity remains to be seen, but it happened. Bernie Stollar couldn't get along with Arakowa either, it was constantly a tug of war battle and it ended poorly.
The same will happen with Xbox. The dust will settle on the battlefield in a couple of years and it'll all come out when Xbox is actually honest with themselves and aren't keeping things. Former employees will talk. They'll talk about a sour relationship with customers, lying to and deceiving them, constantly, over and over. Phil Spencers a con man. You thought Mattrick was bad, Phil Spencer operates like a con artist, he can't handle it anymore so he pawned it off onto his subordinates. Before he liked the spotlight, he wanted to look like a rockstar on a stage and didn't like the end result. And then, yes, Activision. Tell me something, did Call of Duty come to the Switch? MLB The Show from Sony did as part of their agreement with the MLB, but Phil Spencer didn't even make good on bringing CoD to Nintendo so ... You tell me
@Lup it was top 5 for me this year, but also majority of gamers don't buy physical media like me either so...yeah.
We live in an age of most games that are AA-AAA games are by third parties and land in a middle ground where the divide is large for ranking games from #10 though #4 of top 10 games every year. This was bound to happen one good/great game is completely missing/shafted.
