Last week, we noted how The Thing: Remastered appeared to be heading to Xbox consoles on December 5th despite no official announcement from the publisher, and that's exactly what happened - it's out right now on the Xbox Store!
A small selection of reviews also went live last night for The Thing: Remastered, and they're actually quite surprising to read. There's plenty of positivity in these, but also some negativity - we'll share some examples for you to read below.
Shacknews (8/10)
"For what it’s worth, The Thing was never perfect. It has some weird speed in its overall gameplay and cringy dialogue that detract from its scarier elements, but those elements are still fun, and with the improvements that address a sore spot in its strength, The Thing: Remastered makes an interesting outlier of the horror genre that much more valuable."
Destructoid (5.5/10)
"Part of me wishes [Nightdive's] effort was spent on a better game, but the other part is happy that I got to experience the absolute mess that is The Thing. I know it sounds weird to hear, “This is a mess; you should totally check it out,” but that’s what I’m saying."
TechRaptor (7/10)
"Ported by Nightdive, The Thing looks fantastic and has all the bells and whistles you'd want from a remaster. As a follow-up to the cult 1982 movie, the story didn't quite do it for me, and the gameplay, mostly with its AI companions, can be a bit annoying."
Bloody Disgusting (4/5)
"Nightdive is known for its warts & all approach to resurrecting old titles, so I can understand them not wanting them to change things up in any radical ways. Still, I think there was room for at least a few respectful improvements that wouldn’t have undermined the OG developers’ vision. Putting that one issue aside, however, this remains a terrific overall package that’s sure to delight fans of The Thing."
GameSpot (6/10)
"I commend the studio for what it achieved, but the limitations of the technology--and its design constraints--are much more apparent now, even with nostalgia-tinted glasses on. Nightdive has done a fantastic job of restoring this flawed but intriguing game, continuing its crucial work with game preservation."
Sports Illustrated (8/10)
"Nightdive has simply made it look nicer on modern screens, run at approximately a bajillion frames per second, and updated the controls so they don’t make the modern player’s brain fall out of their head. Lovely stuff. I hope Nightdive keeps wearing other game studios’ skins."
Rock Paper Shotgun (Mixed)
"The Thing stays interesting in its foibles even when it’s nowhere close to entertaining. And, on balance, I don’t regret my time with it. It’s a worthwhile bit of in-amber preservation, even if I don’t necessarily want to touch the insect inside if I can help it."
If we look beyond the professional reviews, things are faring well on Steam and Xbox. The Steam verdict sits at "Very Positive" based on just over 100 ratings so far, while the Xbox Store (US) version has a perfect 5/5 score based on 44 user reviews as things stand. If you're wondering, there's no Metacritic average for any platform just yet.
We received our Xbox review code for The Thing: Remastered a few hours ago, so we're hoping to provide our own verdict in the coming days. If you're eager to buy it now though, it's available for £24.99 / $29.99 on the Xbox Store.

Xbox One Remaster of the Year 2024!
Look forward to the pure Xbox review it looks a good game!
Sports Illustrated??? Game reviewing?? That's perhaps even more puzzling than The Thing itself.
Huge 'The Thing' fan here. Another cash grab praying on nostalgic suckers like me eh. How about an actual remake?
I missed this game the first time around so I'd like to give it a go now.
Oh, and also watch the movie first I assume...
Nightdive really just found it's niche bringing back old games because someone at the studio liked the game - rather than worrying so much about review scores.
I mean, it's done some pretty...obscure titles...yet, NIghtdive carries on!
I am sure getting things like getting Doom 1 & 2, Star Wars Dark Forces Remastered, and System Shock offsets the "questionable" games it chooses to modernize.
I am glad Nightdive exists, even if some of its output is more of a curio than a masterpiece.
Huge fan of movie. Loved this on original Xbox. Absolutely will buy to play again.
@Scummbuddy Watching movie first is an ABSOLUTE must. The movie is just so great. Bought on 4k day one release. Over years have VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, now 4K. Lol
Love talk about it l, just not want ruin for anyone. Definitely has that kind of cult level argument in vein of, did Greedo or Han shoot first? But I'll say no more.
@Scummbuddy You're in for a treat. The Thing (1982) is one of the greatest, most intense, tension-filled horror films ever, with some of the best practical effects imaginable. Definitely watch it first before playing the game. 🥹
@GuyinPA75 I have The Thing 1982 on VHS, DVD, two different Blurays (original and Collector's edition, HD-DVD (lol), and now on 4k bluray. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely my favorite horror movie.
People like to hate on this game, but for the time period it was actually quite good. I replayed it only a couple years ago on my Steam Deck after spending a good amount of time to get the antiquated abandonware PC version to work on it. This remaster is great in so many ways, but primarily because it makes the game accessible to casual gamers, modernizes the controls, and fixes the biggest issues of the original like scripted infections. I was happy to support Nightdive buy purchasing it.
@GamingFan4Lyf It's great, because these are often the titles that needed a remaster the most- either because they're no longer available, or because technical issues are bringing them down.
It sure beats the "safe" bets like re-remastering The Last of Us or whatever!
@smoreon Completely agree! I mean, I have never heard of the last 2 games Nightdive did, but I have them on a wishlist now and keep visibility on them.
They would have been completely lost to time had Nightdive not stepped in.
£14 on Iceland store
Night dive is top-tier. The game is very atmospheric. It’s very good. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just a bit dated but it’s still an incredible game. there’s a reason why studios are remastering a bunch of old games because what we’re getting now, these games are god awful and have no soul. Nobody wants to play forced woke trash.
