We're fast approaching the last Xbox-related event of the year in the form of The Game Awards 2024 on December 12th, but before we get there, the nominations have just been revealed - 11 of which are for Xbox-owned games!
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 have both received four nominations each this year, while Diablo 4 appears twice and Age of Mythology: Retold appears once. Here's the list of Xbox nominations for TGA 2024:
- Best Narrative - Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
- Best Audio Design - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 / Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
- Best Performance - Melina Juergens, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
- Innovation In Accessibility - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 / Diablo 4
- Games For Impact - Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
- Best Ongoing - Diablo 4
- Best Action Game - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Best Sim / Strategy - Age of Mythology: Retold
- Best Multiplayer - Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
In terms of the big Game of the Year award though, there's no place for any of these. Here's the GOTY list:
- Astro Bot
- Balatro
- Black Myth: Wukong
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Metaphor: ReFantazio
Obviously there are some actual Xbox games in the GOTY list there — we've had a blast playing the likes of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Metaphor: ReFantazio this year — but nothing specifically owned by Xbox made the list.
If you want to see the full list of nominations for every single category, as well as place your votes, you'll need to head over to the official Game Awards website. Then, we'll find out the winners during the huge showcase on December 12th!

Two days before stalker comes out…and dlc can now win GOTY yea right
DLCs and remakes nominated for game of the year now...
They can enjoy their little circle jerk.
Might sound harsh, but I think only ones that should win are Hellblade 2 for Performance and CoD for MP.. wasn't a particularly great year.
Hope it wasnt deliberate to put 3 main releases just after the cut off for nominations.
@fizban3332 not sure its fair to call rebirth a remake, its far enough from the '97 game to call it a new game.
Black Myth getting the nom gives me far more pause than FFVII or Elden Ring. Dozens of games with a higher score on MC.

Astro Bot and Metaphor were fantastic and definitely deserve those nominations.
Black Myth Wukong is on my wish list, and I’m glad it made it there as well.
Balatro isn’t my thing, and DLC shouldn’t be nominated for best game so Erdtree isn’t even on that list as far as I’m concerned.
…I should probably get back to FF7 Rebirth one of these days…
@elpardo1984 Are there also dozens of games released this year that sold 20 million within a few weeks?
I kinda doubt it!
Brotato not being mentioned is a huge omission… it’s a great indie action game!
I can't remember a year that has ever had so many "not for me" games for game of the year. It feels weird to say but I think call of duty is my current game of the year.
I haven't played astro bot yet but I think that's my pick of Keighleys choices. I was lukewarm on the other 2 astro games and I believe this one is at least as good as those. Didn't like the metaphor demo, hated ff7 rebirth, not remotely interested in black myth, the other options are a dlc and a poker card game.
I’m guessing Stalker 2 (though not an MS game), Flight Simulator and Indiana Jones all missed the cut off period.
Though I enjoyed Astro Bot and Metaphor:Rephantazio, my GOTY would be Zelda:Echoes of Wisdom, such a brilliant game. Also has some of the best Zelda music ever. But yeah, weird nominees this year
Xbox shouldn’t feel bad at all. They put in a good effort and put out some decent software. In a year filled with games like Stellar Blade, FF7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Astrobot, Silent Hill 2, Metaphor and Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, expecting to get nominated would be like a fan in the stands taking the field and going head to head with Ronaldo or like an American football team. Not bloody likely!
Great list of nominees
Infinite Wealth not being nominated for GOTY is a crime. But these awards have been a joke for a long time already.
With the announcement that dlc packs can win it, got is going to Shadow of the Erdtree.
I'd give it to Balatro myself but that's never gonna happen.
The Game Awards are a sham and don’t matter.

What have Xbox released this year that is GoTY worthy or universally praised? Flight sim probably would, but there has to be a cut off somewhere.
Rebirth > Astro > metaphor for me.
DLC shouldn’t be on there. Black myth also isn’t good enough imo. Haven’t played balatro.
Hellblade deserved audio and actress for sure.
Loved Hellblade 2, BUT Microsoft needs to encourage the studio to add more gameplay variety for part 3. This series could be amazing.
Never understood why folks get so rabid about this stuff at least from my perspective as just a gamer.
If I enjoy a game then for me it's a good game & if I don't then it's not. Something getting an award or not doesn't change any of that in the slightest.
I will acknowledge that from a PR or dev perspective there is value for those folks. For me personally as a gamer they are & have always been a non event.
Shadow of the Erdtree gets my vote.
I'm not sure why people dislike the GotY show. I'm kind of indifferent, the only reason I watch is for the world premieres of new games.
@Utena-mobile they dislike it because the game they thought should be on there list isn’t, or one on their favourite box or whatever.
There’s so many ‘GoTY’ awards out there, it’s all kinda meaningless anyway.
I cannot believe that Hellblade II is not up for game of the year. That is utterly crazy. I know it’s short in length but it’s the best looking game of the last few generations, the story is incredible and for it to not even make the cut at all is just ridiculous. But typical of Geoff Keighley and the more and more pointless Game Awards.
@MeanBeanEgg Same here. I think its a good show year after year.
2 sony exclusives that did horrible sales even tho they both had huge advertisement budgets and great reviews, one card game and a dlc... Is there anyone who can take this joke serious? Space Marine 2, Persona 3 Reload, Silent Hill 2, Sparking Zero, Black Ops 6, Palworld, Tekken 8, Stelar Blade just some of the games this year that were WAY better than every game on the list except BMW...
@MeanBeanEgg Palworld is a game that had almost zero advertisement and sold 25mil copies (only on steam) and about 15mil on the first week even tho it was day one on gamepass. Astrobot with a huge advertisement budget sold only 1,5mil. How can you possibly ask me that??? The fact that you mentioned the game from my list with the most success (maybe because it was the only xbox exclusive?) is hilarious!
@MeanBeanEgg sales are the most reliable way to understand if a game is good. Reviews are a joke theses days and metacritic is full of people who votes without any proof they played the game. Using COD (multiplayer) and Fifa some yearly releases as an excuse is a joke. BMW the game that's most likely going to win has great sales, BG3 last year too. Every good game sells, overpriced mid copies like astrobot don't... And yea if pop music sells more as you say it's the best music because more people love it. Best = what more people like not what you like.
@fizban3332 @DarthCvrle66 Not like that is new. Phantom Liberty was nominated for awards last year.
The Game Awards may not carry much weight, but they sure do provide some entertaining fodder for next month's comment section.
Best games I played this year was LAD Infinite Wealth and Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2
For me that show is not worth my time and since i know it i watch it few days later in double speed and skipping forward all the waste of time: between a xbox show case and the game awards i prefer the 1st, in last years those xbox shows are pure fire with no time to waste and so many cool games! The awards are just business for few, it's a scam and that s the reason they keep changing rules..
@fizban3332 I mean Rebirth is not really a typical remake considering how vastly different it is to the OG FF7 in gameplay, visuals and structure.
@GeorgeKal By this logic Avatar 1/2, Avengers Endgame, Titanic and SW The Force Awakens are the best films ever made then.
This "award show" has nothing to do with games. It's ALL ABOUT MONEY AND NOTHING BUT THE MONEY.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner it’s true there are MANY GOTY awards, and this is just one more. But I think what makes TGAs a little more unique is it consolidates hundreds of those awards into one. I.e. The jury is comprised of over a hundred different YouTube channels, news outlets and gaming websites/magazines etc. most of which each have their own individual GOTY awards already, plus a 10% audience vote, to decide any close calls. That means it canvasses a much wider jury than almost all the other awards.
But at the end of the day it’s just meant to be a bit of fun, and a celebration of games, but people always take it FAR too seriously. Then platform warriors often take up their pitchforks and ruin the fun. Just look at some of the comments. 👀
Really should be renamed to TGCSA.
The Geoff Corporate Sponsor Awards.
@DennisReynolds you do realize those were the best films the year they released right? Are you trying to prove my point?
@MeanBeanEgg Using a Pokemon game as an example (one of the biggest franchise ever) is the same as the yearly releases you used before... People who wants to play football will buy fifa/each, people who want to play shooting will buy cod and those who wants to play pokemon will buy any pokemon game even if they aren't that good... You re just trying so hard with silly examples to prove a solid point wrong for what? To prove that one game from your favorite platform is worth winning goty?
@DEATH2SONY yes, I agree. This whole show feels Sony-owned.
There’s a reason Nintendo backed down from it.
I do not care about the game awards, they mean nothing. You may get one or two new trailers and that’s as exciting as it gets.
If I had to choose from that list, Metaphor is my favourite game on it. Astrobot was great fun but I feel it played it a little too safe to be considered truly great.
@BacklogBrad What games do you like?
@FatalBubbles i would vote for any of the following over anything nominated.
Call of duty black ops 6
Silent hill 2
Dragon age veilguard
Space marine 2
Dragons dogma 2
Prince of persia the lost crown
Heckblade 2
Steamworld heist 2
Ara history untold
Zelda echoes of wisdom
Heckdivers 2
Still amazed why Black Myth: Wukong isn't on Xbox yet and why Spencer can't talk about.
A lot of people I know enjoyed Space Marine 2 and Stellar Blade but the games in GOTY competition are probably +90% scores on Metacritic only? (didn't check so could be wrong about that)
I had the most fun with Astro Bot & Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. Xbox has some potential good games still coming!
@themightyant No one wants common sense in here mate. Your facts about who votes and how diverse the range of votes is might interfere with someone's self entitled grievance!
I do appreciate you trying though, but this is an audience who cares not for facts..
@BacklogBrad I have played three on your list and definitely wouldn’t put them above FF7 or Astro. I think I’d put Stellar Blade above all of those as well, maybe even Visions of Mana too. Interesting choices!
@Cikajovazmaj call of duty shouldn't win anything the multiplayer is the worst and most fake ever made even the pro players been complaining.
@Friendly Geoff Keighley always been crooked and the game awards always been a nonsense contest just look at the crowd who is always cheering garbage that comes out broken, crowd full of fake gamers paid to to make the show look legitimate, same crowd that was cheering like trained monkeys for fallout 76.
People get far too wrapped up in these award shows, with a minority treating them like some wild conspiracy.
@GeorgeKal You think Avatar 2 was the best film of 2022? 😂😂😂
Dude by your logic Avatar is greatest film ever made.
@DennisReynolds I explained it way too many times already... Is it so hard to understand that advertisement and the timing also helps with sales? Palworld had almost zero advertisement we only learned about it thanks to gamepass and xbox show and sold 25mil on steam even tho it was day one on gamepass. That proves it was a good game people wanted to play and then recommended it to their friends. Astrobot had a huge advertisement and sold only 1,5mil because it's not a good game. You trying so hard to changes the facts to prove your favorite box has a good game 😂. If TGA wasn't a joke show with only 10% public voting do you possibly believe this game would have a chance? And that fact alone is enough to understand how "fair" it will win if Geoff decides it. Only 10% public voting! What a joke!
@DennisReynolds no idea why I can only see your new comment from my email and not here maybe you deleted it? You re saying I'm trying to downgrade the other console games. If you check the list of the "better" games on my first comment there is no xbox exclusive (except the Palworld that was timed exclusive and its already on ps) and I have 2 sony's exclusive silent hill 2 and stelar blade so yea you may disagree with my preferences or my logic but calling me a funboy is a joke...
My god there are a lot of salty god damn comments here! Hahaha. ”My niche game didn’t get picked, I hate this show”. Ffs grow up. I know 90% of you have some other ”reason” for spewing your whining and hate, but no one buys it.
Anyone responding to this with some kind of ”cool” response will only reveal yourselves as exactly the ones I’m talking about.
As with all award shows ever made in every category ever, not everyone can win, obviously.
And I don’t get the hate for DLC, sure a lot of DLC’s are CRAP. But the Elden Ring DLC is better and bigger than most full games ffs. If you make a DLC like THAT, you deserve a nomination at least.
