State of Decay 3 developer Undead Labs has announced a 'new era' for the studio with a new logo and website.
The previous logo and branding were directly related to "making a zombie game" and the team wanted something a "bit bigger with a bit more room to explore" going forward.
To help with the makeover, it's partnered with '51 eggs' - a brand development company. The new logo is made up of an hourglass and skeleton key (and some mystery). The motto is "we brave the darkness to discover our light... thus we are undead".
Studio head Philip Holt went into a bit more detail about Undead's update:
"We're well on our way to making State of Decay 3 with a much greater level of ambition and support behind us... from a studio standpoint I felt like we needed to take a look at our branding, to say is the brand the way that we're presenting ourselves to the world measuring up to what our ambitions are around what we're trying to achieve with our game...and so that was sort of the origin"
Studio Art Director Wayne Laybourn further explains how this makeover at Undead Labs "opens up" the possibilities of what the studio is doing now, and where it might go in the future. While nothing else has been revealed so far, all of this sounds like it could potentially lead to entirely new projects in the future.
In September, Undead Labs revealed it was shifting all of its "focus and resources" to the development of the third State of Decay game. The team recently announced State of Decay 2's final major update as well.
This follows on from the Xbox studio 343 Industries announcing a "new dawn" for the Halo series with a studio rebrand to 'Halo Studios' and the news the Halo games would be developed on Unreal Engine going forward.
What are your thoughts about this logo update for Undead Labs? How would you feel about the studio working on other games going forward? Let us know in the comments.

This is one of the... concerns I've had with specialized studios. Eat breathe and sleep Halo or Gears for so long, you're going to get sick of it. Even giving them the smallest chance to try something else even if that's a small tiny little IP of a new game inbetween endless sequels seems like such a no brainer.
So it makes sense UL would like to do more than just make zombie survival games forever, even if said type of game will always be their priority. I dunno. I personally wish 343 and Coalition had this kind of opportunity, too.
Variety is the spice of life. Also I would've loved to play whatever the hell Black Tusk (now coalition) was working on pre-Gears transformation.

Whilst I'm looking forward immensely to a new State of Decay game I can't deny it also fills me with trepidation. Does anyone remember a time when you found out about a new game release and was like "Yeah this is gonna be awesome!" ?
@StaminanX I am so excited for the new Indiana Jones game for Xbox by Machine Games, and also for Gears of War E-Day from The Coalition.
I am still playing SOD2. Still love it. As the studio is quite small and they have listened to the community throughout the past 6 years. I have faith they will make a game which their community will love. Keeping the same premises but enhancing the experience.

@StaminanX I felt that way when I saw Baldur's Gate 3, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, and Jagged Alliance 3. They did not disappoint.
@old-dad I get you. I just haven't gotten over Payday 3. I got so excited for that after spending so much time on 2 and then.. well, it was awful.
@rwfsmith Hell no, all those games are incredible!
@Elbow I'd like to see them try their hand at making a survival/crafting game that's more in the vein of the myriad titles of more "fantastical" / sci-fi persuasions, most of which have come out in recent years. ("Fantasy" in genre world-building is a loose term now, and maybe always should have been, but it's annoyingly gatekept... Hence the " ").
Well I remember they said the wanted realistic graphics .. if it’s still cartoony I won’t trust anything they say before a release
