Undead Labs has announced that, with the help of support team Wushu Studios, Legacy Awaits will be the final major content update for State of Decay 2. Launching as a free patch across PC and Xbox — including Game Pass — the title's 38th update brings a collection of new and returning outfits, vehicles and weapons, some big quality-of-life improvements, a selection of 'game adjustments' and some major bug fixes to the zombie-slayer.
The team's list of changes has been fully explained in a detailed Steam blog post, where we get early looks at some of the big updates being made in State of Decay 2's final patch. Here's how Undead Labs introduces its Legacy Awaits update:
"In this update we are addressing long-standing issues, introducing various Quality of Life improvements, and permanently unlocking previously gated or seasonal content, such as the Wizard Van and Winter outfits.
This is our final update for State of Decay 2, but this is not the end of the journey! We are now shifting all our focus and resources to development of the upcoming third instalment, State of Decay 3."
And there you have it - we were going to mention the upcoming State of Decay 3 here, but the team has beaten us to it. Announced more than four years ago before Xbox Series X|S was even out, SOD3 is still coming from Microsoft, and we're happy to see more resources shift over to that game's development.
This update should be rolling out now for all State of Decay 2 players, and for the extensive list of fixes and changes, check out the Steam blog link down below. It's fantastic to have seen this level of support from Xbox on SOD2, but we're more than ready to see State of Decay 3 grace our screens!
Who's still playing SOD2, then? Tell us what you make of this final update down below.

I'm excited for state of decay 3. I hope this means it is getting close. October 2025?
State of decay 2 is an awesome game.
I'm a big fan of SoD2 although it has it's fair share of problems. But it is still one of the best zombie games I've played. Still play to this day and love the lethal mode it's an adrenaline filled adventure. I'm so glad they're focusing everything to SoD3 hopefully it'll have a much better individual story and a few more choices that may or may not haunt us later on.
It has always had something about it that makes it one of the best zombie games, despite the bugs. Doing a ‘Marvin Dorfler’ on zombies with a vehicle door is always enjoyable.
I love this game, maybe my most played on Xbox. I deeply thank Undead Labs (and Wushu) for their amazing work. Hoping the best for State of Decay 3.
It still surprises me how supported this game was. I really enjoy it, but it was like a quiet juggernaut in the background, not making many waves but going strong enough for, what, six years of support? That's crazy.
I'll be sad to see SOD2 fade away but here's hoping SOD3 is a proper evolution.
Keep hoping they release a mode that gets rid of all the special zombies and makes all zombies the Romero style zombies.
I'd really, really, really, enjoy that.
SoD2 needs another patch to fix the notifications that keep updating and cause the game to crash. Minus that new issue, SoD2 is polished but the game missed the idea of a sandbox survival zombie apocalypse bc this game is a baby sitting, fetch quest, chore sim with zeds. SoD3 needs to feel more isolated and alone or minimal group fighting to survive.
I really like that Microsoft has been dedicated to this game for so long. I like it when a publisher stands behind its games like they have with this one.
