A few months ago, there was a load of news coming out regularly about Avowed as Xbox opened up on its new RPG, but things have gone a little quiet since the game's recent delay. Still, we're quite excited about this one dropping next February, and some new information coming from GamesRadar is keeping us interested in the title in the here and now.
Obsidian game director Carrie Patel spoke about Avowed during a recent demo session, touching on the game's choices and how the team is building another decision-driven RPG. Patel says that the team wants to create "meaningful roleplay" in Avowed, by "giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning".
"Giving players things to dig into - that's what makes it meaningful roleplay, It's about who you want to be in this world, and how these situations prepare you to express that.
The abilities you can scope into and the weapon loadouts you can choose give you a very different experience each time you play."
That last bit is good to hear too, we'd love for Avowed to be nice and replayable with fresh builds and totally different ways to experience the game's roleplaying, depending on how you approach things. The proof will be in the pudding, ultimately - but it's all sounding pretty good so far.
Anyway, you'll be able to experience this RPG with an Xbox Game Pass subscription on February 18th, 2025 - where you'll decide exactly the type of character you want to be in this Pillars of Eternity-originated world.
What do you think to how Avowed is sounding so far? Talk to us about it down in the comments.

I’m of two minds on this one and I haven’t been completely sold either way yet.
On the one hand, we have a developer making promises that they’ve definitely delivered on before in the past, on prior Obsidian titles. On the other hand, all they’ve shown thus far is janky combat, stilted animations that look quite awkward, and a hideously garish visual aesthetic reminiscent of those eye-searing Lisa Frank neon art supplies for kids from the ‘90’s.
This sounds a direct response to the main complaint I've been seeing with the new Dragon Age, that being that there's very-little-to-no player choice and none of the companions change their opinions of you in any meaningful way based on your choices.
I trust obsidian. I can't think of a single obsidian game that ever failed on its promise, ever, nor Black Isle before it. They've had jank when they run out of budget, but they still make a worthwhile game even then (kotr2). The key team are the legends of CRPGs. I'd be stunned if they missed.
I really really tried to like Obsidian's isometric RPGs but I just couldn't enjoy them.
This looks perfect for me. The best things from Obsidian minus the things I don't like.
This looks more like an action first-person than an RPG!
Feel like this might get delayed out of Feb.. no pre orders or store page to commit to that date and a ton of AAA games due out very close by in Feb.
Carrie Patel was the lead narrative designer for Outer Worlds. This is her first game, but when she says things like "Giving players things to dig into, that's what makes it meaningful roleplay"
I believe her.
Having played both Pillars of Eternity games earlier this year I have high expectations of this game. Hope they haven't "streamlined" it too to much. 🤞
I know obsidian will deliver choice, i have zero doubts about that.
Deloverong a living world that reacts to said choices and not saved for the final mission falvour and text on picture endings or a world that doesn't actively punish exploration that I am less convinced about.
The world being segmented hopefully address my personal complaints
They have proven themselves numerous times, most recently with Outer world. Biggest red flag for this game is if it’s not 60 fps.
@DEATH2SONY It has 3rd person as well.
Interesting... I actually think this game Wii turn out good. The devs seem passionate and everything they've shown looks pretty promising.
Im looking forward to it.
But damn what a month it has been pencilled in to release.
Kcd2, civ7, AC, LaD, wilds, all also slated for feb.
I really hope avowed doesn’t get lost amongst those, so I can maybe see a date change on the horizon.
