Black Myth: Wukong has been a heck of a story so far, hasn't it? We've had conflicted reports about the reasoning behind the game's Xbox delay, followed by a super impressive launch where the title exploded in popularity. Having said all that, we didn't know it had been this popular...
Coming out of Tokyo Game Show this week, we're seeing that the Chinese action game has sold 20 million copies in a month. Yes, 20 million copies across two platforms for a brand-new IP - that just seems nuts to us.
As we already alluded to up above, the Xbox version of Black Myth: Wukong has been a walking controversy for months now. We played a PC build back in the summer — writing up a glowing review of our time with the game — but developer Game Science put the Xbox version on hold indefinitely.
While we're still waiting for that Xbox launch date, feel free to check out our PC preview down below for some initial PX thoughts on an early build of Black Myth: Wukong. Hopefully, we get that Xbox date soon, but it sounds like the game has been doing mighty fine with just PS5 and PC as its launch platforms.
Can you believe this game has shifted that many copies? Tell us what you think of this down below.

Of those 20 million over 85-90% of the sales were on PC i would suspect. It’s not like it’s a run away success on PS5. I don’t know the new numbers but when the game was at 10 million it was reported only 1.5 was on PS5, and 8.5 million was on PC. As in that region PC is way more popular.
Yes, this is more of a China/PC success story.
It's a good game.
I am off and on playing it. For me, I have to be in the right mood for this game. It's not that's necessarily hard, it's just that I sometimes don't want to fight multiple bosses in such a short amount of time during my gaming time.
There are just so many games at my fingertips on PC at the moment that I am all over the place with my playing habits - some are new to me, some I have played before on console but now seeing through an entirely different lens on PC (e.g. Alan Wake 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Lords of the Fallen, etc.), others are just stone-cold classics from my Steam library that have been sitting dormant for the last 12 years when I got off my PC (e.g. Half-Life 2, Portal - but now with RTX, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc.).
I really need to dial it in at some point or I will never finish anything!
@HonestHick it sold 10 million after only 3 days, so even if it was only 1.5 on PS5 that’s still not bad at all.
This isn’t just a China and PC success story:
‘According to PlayStation, Black Myth: Wukong was the most-downloaded PlayStation Store game for August 2024 in North America, Japan, and Europe, beating the likes of Madden NFL 25, which is incredible for a brand-new IP. If its sales continue to be this strong, Black Myth: Wukong could very well become the best-selling new video game of 2024’
It’s also selling well world wide. With zero sales on Xbox, that’s got to sting a bit at HQ.
Personally I’ve not picked it up. Performance on PS5 isn’t where I’d like it to be.
I was kind of expecting to see some sort of update at TGS for the xbox version, but that looks like a no. I'll have to see how it runs on the ROG Ally X, as that's another option for me if I really wanted to play it.
Didn’t the developers say that Xbox wasn’t a priority and with PC sales like that …. Xbox is not a priority…. So unfortunately it may tell other developers to prioritize Xbox last which has been every Xbox owner worst fear that it is already happening… so I find no joy with this…..also there may have been a shady agreement but still…
Yeah, as others have said, for those that don't know, the runaway sales success is almost entirely in China alone, and there, nearly entirely on PC. The game is sort of a cultural touch point in China, based on one of their most famous classical literary works that's deeply tied into the culture, plus a big AAA Nvidia sponsored game from a Chinese studio and it turned into a viral success instantly.
Doesn't mean it's a bad game, but it's extreme success looks different in context than at a glance. It's not really because the game became the biggest thing ever, it's explicitly a China thing and is a game that sells averagely decent elsewhere as well.
Fantastic game. A goty contender for me... even though my old man reflexes struggle with it and its not without its flaws. Whilst theres no doubt its been a huge success on PC, its also sold well on ps5 with best estimates being about 3.5 million. Not bad for a new IP and still early in its shelf life.
I hope it comes to xbox soon, everyone deserves a chance to enjoy it.
Didn't bother getting it on playstation...doubt il ever play it now...to many games to play...and didn't have the must play kind of reviews to make me jump in
@HonestHick Yep, thinking the same thing. Huge % on PC.
No Xbox version? No ***** given.
@AlwaysPlaying
Agree that Xbox is not currently the priority for developers but the potential of 30 million plus customers would surely be something that can't be ignored by them.
Okay? This game isn't coming to Xbox, so I don't know why you folks keep making articles on it.
The Internet is really trying to guilt trip me into finishing this game it feels like.
@GeeForce it’s not going to be 30million customers. In reality it’s far lower. And that’s not a dig at Xbox or anything.
Once you take away all the people that have the ability to play it elsewhere (ps/pc wherever), people who own multiple Xbox. Then all the people not interested.
@MsJubilee because if you look at most articles, the only thing that garners comments are ones that tend to say ‘we don’t have’ or some sort of console war stuff.
@MsJubilee @Kieduss Xbox version is confirmed just delayed.
Beat this one over the weekend. It was amazing. 10/10 for me, and my GotY so far.
@i mean don’t get me wrong, it’s not a good look that Xbox don’t have the game. But again it is selling 80% or more of its volume in China on PC’s. That said i think MS needs to make sure it’s not missing major releases as it just makes the PS stronger and gives YouTubers more ammo to make videos of why Xbox is doing poorly. So i get your point and at some point this will come to Xbox but i am not sure what the audience looks like there for this game.
That is impressive. China really supported this game. I have it on PC and am only in the third chapter. There are some performance/graphical issues even on a 4080, though the game is highly playable. There are some old school "gamey" restrictions to the world.
As far as combat/gameplay, I prefer Lies of P. Most of the bosses were "easy" so far. The Wind boss in the desert is a little tough, and that is where I'm at.
I wonder whether Sony will extend their console exclusivity, as they did with Final Fantasy 7, following the success that the game is clearly having?
1) So like all the comments are saying, most of the sales are on PC. That's not discounting the games success on PS, but I think the real miss here is being glossed over. Black Myth Wukong isn't available on the MS store or Xbox launcher, so while Microsoft can't really capture where most of the game sales are. Even though in theory they should have hands down the best gaming storefront on windows and be able to attract all devs to develop for it. But in reality they have the worst of the bunch that's the least used and they have to miss out on so many sales whenever a game like this is a breakout success on PC. They even lowered their cut to nearly a third of Steam and still can't get nearly as many devs to support their launcher. That's gotta be an embarrassment.
This is also where I see Xbox's gaming superpower. Xbox Play Anywhere isn't pushed hard enough but if marketed properly (especially in regions like China and South Korea where PC gaming is by far the favorite), Xbox as a console could easily become the favorite choice. Have an expensive gaming rig in the room with a monitor and $300 to $500 console on the TV (maybe in the family room) and a library that's 1:1. They need to do more to make developing for the Xbox launcher on windows and Xbox consoles 1:1 and make Xbox Playanywhere the standard and not just a gimmick. Also actually marketing it. In general the problem lies in how awful Microsoft is at building a gaming ecosystem on Windows. The MS store, Xbox Launcher, and Windows in general all need a LOT of work (and that's despite how much they've grown in recent years). Steam OS is where Windows SHOULD be now. A simple gaming mode that slaps Xbox branding everywhere and gives an Xbox console like experience.
2) You know what my concern is? If after this with how many of the sales were in China alone, we see a weird period akin to when Hollywood was overly trying to appeal to Chinese markets in gaming. Which I wouldn't care that much about if Hollywood hadn't been historically racist during this time. Stuff like Disney minimizing Finn's role in the Last Jedi so they could easily take him off the poster because they don't like black people in China. I'm black. That period really didn't feel too good going to cinema and knowing people that look like me were having their roles screwed with to appeal to a particular market that still haven't wrapped their heads around people with dark skin existing.
I don't hugely expect it to happen, but it is a "random thought before I go to bed" worry of mine. The gaming industry is kinda scrambling now and desperate for growth. I welcome new markets and making gaming more accessible and appealing to all. But I don't take kindly to any group of people having to be muted in nothing but a shameless desperate attempt at a cash grab in another region.
