We don't know where the last 365 days have gone, as today marks exactly one year since the full launch of Starfield on Xbox and PC! In that time the game has grown substantially with a variety of updates and even mod support.
Bethesda's space epic got off to a good start with the critics back then, including here at Pure Xbox where we gave Starfield an "Excellent" 9/10 in our review, but the game has definitely had its critics - it's still sitting on a "Mixed" rating on the Steam platform, for example. Nevertheless, we've definitely enjoyed our time with it so far!
Let's not forget that Todd Howard and his team have worked hard to improve the experience ever since as well, adding new features like 60FPS support on Xbox Series X and S, a Creations suite complete with a massive range of free player-created mods, the game's first land vehicle, and much more. It sounds like there's a lot to come, too.
It's not just a milestone that Starfield is celebrating in September this year either, as we've got the first major expansion in Shattered Space coming our way at the end of the month. Fingers crossed that'll be a great addition to the game!
So, 365 days since one of the biggest releases of the Xbox Series X|S era, how are you feeling about Starfield right now? Are you still playing it? Any features that still haven't arrived that you wanted to see? Tell us down below.

Will You Be Getting The Shattered Space Expansion? (1,239 votes)
- It's already included in my Premium version
- I'll be buying it for day one, yep!
- I probably will, but maybe not at launch
- Not sure yet
- Maybe when it drops in price
- I don't think so to be honest!
Now that we've had a year, how do you feel about Starfield? Come and tell us in the comments below.

I got a copy when I purchased my Series X last year, and I just couldn't get into it then. It's my kind of game too, but I think a combination of things is at play. With the additions to the game since then, I'm certainly interested in trying again.
I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition (the one with watch), and have yet to play to the game at all. I was deep into Baldur's Gate 3 around the time Starfield released, and with all the reviews I decided to await to for the majority of bugs to be quashed and DLC release. Then I can pour many, many hours into the game when it is at its best*.
*I imagine that will also be the version that PlayStation gets too, my bet is that it will release on the PS5 late this year. The announcement could even come at the Tokyo Games Show later this month seems as that is a good place to capture the attention of the Sony fanbase...
I slated starfield at release I thought it wasn't great at all however Bethesda need commending for sticking at it and keep updating the game I'll plat it again now in the future definitely still won't be a patch on skyrim not a chance
I gave it 90 hours and there were definitely elements of it I really enjoyed, but I' got bored walked away and don't intend to go back.
I am pleased they have continued to support it in the way they have though. Maybe if I didnt have so many other fantastic titles to play I would have tried it again with the improvements, but I'm not on GP now so it seems unlikely.
I'm delighted that many others have had a way better time though.
It’s a bit like Cyberpunk 2077 - they keep promising new features and I keep holding off from playing it until they arrive!
Preordered the collector’s edition, but I honestly struggled with playing the game. I felt bored during a lot of my time with it. I got a good 50 hours in than rushed to the end. Theres some good, some bad, and mostly a lot of boring in the game.
It definitely had a few 9/10 moments but also a LOT of much lower ones. Probably 7/10 at launch overall but hoping all the updates and Shattered Space can raise that. I also hope it values my time a little more.
7/10 decent game the story is very dull though also the last mission glitched on me making it impossible to complete after loads of hours put into the game about 80 to 90 hours so can't bring myself back just yet to start a new one will probably just leave the game alone for good now🤷
Feels alot longer ago to me....I put in quite a fair chunk of time into it and was enjoying it....but I barely touched the main storyline and got burnt out...and now I CBA to return to it lol
I really enjoyed it and put a good 80 hours into, I loved the music and the gunplay was very polished for a Bethesda title. I still boot it up every now and again just to walk around on a random planet. It's a shame they didn't quite hit the mark with some design choices and mechanics and the amount of load screens is an issue too.
Put about 120 hours into, completed it a few times over but rated it 6/10 on the vote above. It just felt extremely last gen and tired. It wasn't bad but it should have been much, much better with so much potential there. Understand they wanted Skyrim in space but it was literally skyrim in space without any improvements other than the awful temple sections. It didn't help that the game crashed out at least once every gaming session.
Just wish they'd give up on it and try something else - or maybe get next elder scrolls out quicker.
Tbh I was generally quite disappointed. I actually enjoyed the main campaign, but the moment they announced "1000 planets" I had a feeling that the game was going to be exactly what it was: a big-for-no-reason, mostly empty hull of a game. Bethesda games are known for their density of things to do, and this game was devoid of that. Most of the outposts look exactly the same, too many quests went nowhere. I STILL dont understand why there would be inhabitable planets with one city on them. I could go on but this was one of the most disappointing games I've played in a long time, considering who made it.
I had to drag myself out of it after 250 hours, since my backlog was growing and growing. Wonderful game, I'll definitely give it a second spin sometime after the DLC is out.
I enjoyed it and jumped a few times post-game. I actually think the story and the space magic ruins the game.
Bethesda crafted this incredibly deep space role playing experience where you can be anything from a farmer to an academic to a smuggler to Captain Kirk. Running missions for the different factions and doing the side quest plots are a lot of fun. I felt the Delgado one was the best in the game.
But the missions for Constellation and the power collection? Ruins the game. They should have had the balls to cut it completely. Once you’ve killed the pirates on the starting planet and got your first ship it should have been you and Vasco against the galaxy: go where you like, do what you like.
I loved my time with Starfield (199 hours) but I regret playing it last year having to put up with the 30 fps. Had I known that a 60 fps update was coming this year, I would gladly have waited. Now knowing better, I won’t make the same mistake with Avowed.
Your comment, @JoakimZ, is precisely why I chose to pre-order the game, but not play it until everything was fixed, and the DLC was released. Thus my first experience of the game will be most bugs fixed, vehicles, 60fps and the DLC.
This is not something that I did for Starfield alone. I now leave many games until 6 to 12 months after release, so that I experience the optimal game. I've chosen to do it most recently with Star Wars Outlaws, which I'm hoping Ubisoft can turn around too. And of course, it also means that you can pick the game up cheaper, which is a great added bonus...
I def enjoyed my time. Put about 50 hours in (30 just doing random things, then 20 doing the mainline).
I haven’t touched since the updates, always thought I’d comeback for shattered space, but probs not til next year. Too much other things I want to play this year first
I love it. 10/10 for me.
Finished the main story, did lots of side quests, custom ships, outposts, 100% achievements in more than 200 hours.
Definitely playing Shattered Space.
Was enjoying it somewhat just after the release, but I landed a silly bug where if I aim down scope, the zoomed-in view would be whatever was 180 degrees behind me. So, I'd see an enemy, zoom-in and be looking at mountains. It drove me nuts! As Bethesda are no slouch when it comes to amount of bugs their games carry - I reported it, but the following patch still had the issue. I gave up. Yeah, from what I played, 7/10.
I love starfield. I think it is an incredible game. I have already spent a ton of time in it (4 playthroughs) and I expect to come back to it every few years for a very long time like i do with many other bethesda games.
After finishing the story and putting around 120 hours into the game, I put it at around an 8/10. I enjoyed it overall but a lack of depth in some areas took this away from the 10/10 it could have been. I got the DLC with the premium edition but beyond that I doubt I will play it much more unless there is another Cyberpunk style large update that addresses the loading screens in a better way like Star Wars Outlaws.
7/10 I put 70hrs in to complete it. I’m sure it runs better now. But I’ve never felt like I’ve missed it or wanted to dive back in.
However I probably will give it another go in the future. Can’t be a 9 or 10 as it was way too buggy to be those kind of scores.
@Fiendish-Beaver Do you actually use the watch? I used to use it a lot then one day it stopped connecting to my phone. I contacted Bethesda a few weeks ago, and they told me my case was being forwarded to the relevant person, and I never heard back.
The greatest disappointment ever for me personally.
I've never been a Bethesda fan (I'd only played Skyrim before and thought it was ok at best), but for some reason I was super hyped for this game, and I was so looking forward to becoming a space pirate and contraband shady stuff all over the galaxy.
The red flags were there, so it's on me as well, but the game really ended up an abysmal mess.
Nothing coheres, nothing makes sense, the universe is so unimaginative it could've been set in 2035, every single system is shallow at best and pointless at worst, and you're constantly railroaded through a series of false choices that end up meaning squat in the grand scheme of things (but even in the small one too lol).
The writing is (again) unimaginative and terrible: there's a whole universe you can fill with all sorts of societies but no, let's default to two identical capitalistic models that oppose each other for no practical reason other than buzzwords.
This game has such little bite it won't even stop you from joining a faction that's rivals with one you're already affiliated with. You can't kill "important" NPCs. I could go on.
Oh, and one thing that bugs me to no end but I never hear criticized: why is there space magic in this game? Wasn't this supposed to be a "NASApunk", "grounded" take on a sci-fi universe?
Because that's what drew me in in the first place.
No, @LaurenceJ1987. I rarely open my Collector's Editions (and I buy way too many of them!). Thus I have no idea of whether the watch is working or not as the CE remains sealed. Plus, I don't wear a watch these days either... 😂
I put 60 hours in and it had great moments but to many ok moments I gave a 7/10.
Very old fashioned GUI and development systems felt tens year old compared to snappy games of this generation. Never had so much loading and Fanny about with a game.
Any way let’s hope Xbox hit a 9/10 plus in meta with their next big game Indy.
It’s sort of becoming the average to a little bit above average publisher now for Microsoft games.
Continued from above.
Nintendo and Sony have not had great years, but the difference is they always pull one out the bag that gets the attention and sells. That is what counts and the secret of their success.
Sony of course Astro Bot
Nintendos will be Zelda Echos.
So let’s see if Microsoft games can do it as well with Indy or just stay a bit above average and get hardly any coverage or brand momentum or general public appeal.
With Indy they have with the franchise an amazing opportunity and if the game is 9 plus on meta and they PR and advertise correctly they could bring some much needed focus to xbox.
@StonyKL the temple sections were TERRIBLE. Who thought that would be fun?! Every temple should have been it's own puzzle/dungeon. That was just lazy.
Starfield was my favorite game of 2023. I wanted great Bethesda questlines in a space adventure skin, and that is what I received.
Idk but I’m tired of Bethesda stiff style of character models seems outdated
It really is a great game.
We all know why it got pooped on at launch. And it was a truly incredibly, silly, and petty reason.
I literally bought a Series X just for Starfield. Got the premium version. Used a couple vacation days to maximize my early access. Played well over 150 hours searching for the magic. Left completely disappointed. It's not terrible by any means, but it lacks everything that makes the other Bethesda games so captivating and replayable. It's all so sterile and homogenized. No memorable characters or dialog. No story beats I yearn to experience again. I loved building settlements in Fallout 4 way more than I thought I would. Trying to find the same joy in Starfield was completely fruitless, especially when I colonized an entire system, set up mines and supply chains through much trial-and-error frustration, and then realized I had so much surplus cash I could have just bought everything without mining at all.
It disappointed as a sandbox. It disappointed as an RPG. It mildly succeeds at being a shooter, but it's supposed to be those other 2 things first.... 4/10
@Fiendish-Beaver Fair enough. I don't usually buy collector's editions but I thought the watch was actually a practical thing that looked cool. But if it can't connect to my phone it's purely an ornament.
@armondo36 oh god they were terrible. One of the worst things I’ve ever seen put in a game. And pointless.
I should deduct a mark for these alone!
@GuyinPA75 which was?
Buggy? Huge amount of loading screens? Crashes. Save issues (iirc). 30fps?
There were many underlying issues at launch.
After Skyrim which was very much made a lot more casual in comparison to the prior TES games, I expected more RPG elements (which the trailers and stuff seemed to indicate) and ended up being really dissapointed.
The last Bethesda game I enjoyed was Fallout 3 and it was already dumbed down.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Wish could reply and have conversation with you about starfield. But people report replies as baiting that result in suspension.
Sad but true. Just not worth the effort.
@Fiendish-Beaver Erm what's the point in pre ordering them then ...would make alot more sense if you are waiting untill games are fully patched etc ...to buy the game then when it's no doubt cheaper ...not pre it at its most expensive
I played it 150 hours when it came out and really enjoyed it. I don’t get why it has to be this perennial thing. I don’t want a live service game. I played it and loved it. It’s over.
The expansion looks interesting, but it’s hard to go back to a game a year later unless I’m restarting
I voted 9, because I love Starfield and also look forward to play the expansions. Great game.
I'm near the end of the main campaign now. It's very...ok. 6/10 for me. It's no Skyrim or Fallout. Biggest issue I've found is the space between good quests is just...meh. Even with the Rover now I'm still very meh about it. It's a shame cuz some of the quests are truly great. Maybe it's the procedural generative nature of the filler. I dunno.
They're Collector's Editions, @StylesT. They tend to sell out almost immediately, which is why I pre-order them...
Yes, @LaurenceJ1987, totally get that wanting it for practical use, and then have it cease working, would be very frustrating. I would keep on at them to get it sorted, mate. It's a lot of money to pay for something that stops working that quickly...
I thought the side faction missions were incredible especially the crimson fleet story line. The main story on the other hand though…
@Titntin there are no other fantastic titles to play. Absolutely nothing. No rdr2 or cyberpunk level game. Your comment is strange in many levels
I'm not sure about Starfield. My partner played it on GP for the first hour and it looked dull.
I got a free Premium version with my graphics card so I might give it another shot after the expansion drops.
It's a watered down Fallout 4 in every conceivable way, so simplified and dumbed down I couldn't take it anymore just under halfway through. And what's sad is they're moments of greatness like the UC Vanguard and Crimson Fleet storylines that are really good, but they come 'n go and are just drops of water in the bucket of otherwise boring content.
Have tried playing Starfield, but 30min I get a urge to play No Man Sky instead.
Honestly, I think overall Starfailed sucks. I give it a 6. I liked Redfail better.
Waiting on shattered space.
I always absolutely loved the concept of this game. Elder Scrolls and Fallout has always been my thing, and this is basically those games in space, and I love space games. Only problem was how rough it was at launch, but you know what was also rough at launch? Cyberpunk. Guess what, I also consider that to be one of the best games this gen. That's the thing about these games, and I think everyone forgets how rough Skyrim and Fallout 4 were when they launched as well. It took a while to become a game I would want to play regularly, but it appeals to my interests like nothing else right now.
Uhm.. to be honest, i forgot about this game. Have it on pc, but only played the beginning, after that i only played other games. Will boot it up again.
It doesn't help that I grew up in the 90s and 2000s when games were released finished and feature complete. Rated 6/10. Played about 40 hours 6-8 months ago, lost interest. Played recently for an hour, bored me. I may try again, but I was reminded I was in a game too often to be immersed.
I loved it for what I played, but I never finished the game.
I waited for a few patches (I wanted maps !) and now I'm thinking about returning to it.
I've downloaded all the Star Wars Mods I can find, meanwhile. I'll soon return to my ship, for sure !
I just finished playing Starfield for over 100 hours, it's really an extraordinary game.
@Vilome 'there are no other fantastic titles to play. Absolutely nothing.'
WTF are you talking about? This year is stuffed with them? Im a multi platform player, and xbox has been dry but theres a ton of great titles on other platforms. Currently playing Astrobot and Black Wukong, both of them absolutely stonking games, but Ive a ton on the backlog too, including some great switch titles. I've been addicted to games since space invaders launched in the arcades when I was 15, and ive never had a bigger back log than I have now.
If you dont like current games, you either on the wrong platforms, or you dont enjoy games anymore and need a new hobby.
Its ironic that you find my post strange whilst making such a weird post as your first post, having only just registered?
Such massive world and a huge game. I’ve started playing again from the start as tbh I found myself a bit lost!
But I really enjoy it and think it’s one of the most underrated games of the current generation.
So much to explore, great characters, guns, combats.
If this game had say the Star Wars name attached, it would have got higher scores and if it had released on PlayStation , it would have scored 9’s across the board.
It just did nothing for me. I really wanted to enjoy it but the more i stuck with it the more it made me dislike it. Now I can't bring myself to play it. Admittedly, this is partly my own fault for forcing myself to plug away when I probably should have stopped. It just feel like they went for size over enjoyment. A 1000 planets is great but when I have to sit through relentless loading screens to then explore emptiness, it all feels pointless.
I may pick up the expansion on the cheap one day but it won't be any time soon.
While I think the game has some major problems, I really enjoyed it and plan to go back to it to play Shattered Space and use the new vehicle. It's all paid for since launch.
@MjJmediablogger the star wars game got a lower score than starfield on average?
It wouldn’t have done any better if it was on PS. Because it was full of launch issues. - maybe if it goes to PS in future it may review higher, but obviously it will be because it includes updates.
Great game. I 100% the game's achievements. I am coming back to it when the shattered space will be released.
One to forget for me, such wasted potential. Wow you gave it 9/10 . . Ok then.
Microsoft gambled everything on this title and lost.
