This week, Xbox developer Mojang Studios has officially announced a release date for the PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft - this native PS5 release hits Sony's platform on October 22nd. However, despite Mojang being under Microsoft control for absolutely ages at this stage, we still don't know anything about a native Xbox Series X|S version of the title.
Yep, that's right; Minecraft is coming to PS5 but not Xbox Series X and S, which just feels odd considering Microsoft literally owns the IP and its development studio. Of course, the game does look and run better on current-gen Xbox consoles (and has done since a 2023 preview update), but that is still technically the Xbox One version of the game.
What's more, that sort of update is also feasible for the PS4 version of Minecraft. At this point, there have been loads of PS4 games made to look and run better via PS5 backwards compatibility, but for some reason, Mojang is going down the native route with Minecraft. This new version will support 4K resolution and 60FPS playback on PS5, with no other 'current-gen' features announced.
Just a few weeks ago, we ranted about not seeing this Xbox Series version of Minecraft yet - on the 10-year anniversary of the game's Xbox One release. It seems that, despite our calls, we won't be receiving that current-gen Xbox port anytime soon - and in the process we're still left waiting for those sweet, sweet ray tracing features. Maybe one day, eh?
Are you as confused by this situation as us? Tell us your thoughts on it all down below.

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if an Xbox first-party game is a timed PS5 exclusive.
@abe_hikura - That actually did happen with Deathloop and Ghostwire…
But are people really going to complain about this when there’s already an S/X enhancement? I suppose it will probably wring a few quid out of PS5 owners who want the latest, greatest version.
[Insert "Xbox is dead" comments]
As far as i know this ps5 native minecraft offers nothing different than the current version you have on series x. It has same draw distance, resolution, fps etc etc.
Already said too many times regarding ray tracing on console its dead, move on already. Or you know do your job and report what it actually being worked on instead. Sigh
There will be an update for our version no doubt about that nobody panic please 👍

@Pabpictu How extraordinary. If you don't like a story, simply move on, throwing your toys out the pram doesn't change the fact a news site will report on news.
I don't think anyone is likely to lose sleep over this (maybe one), but its a strange thing to have to report on for sure.
The only advantage a PS5 native port will have will be reading the SSD at ps5 speeds. I'm not as aware of the toolset for S/X, but maybe they do that already....be grateful if anyone with that knowledge could enlighten me!
Mom, can we have a native current gen version of Minecraft at home?
We have native current gen Minecraft on PS5.

@Old_Man_Harper I wouldn't say that's completely fair. Those games were announced and already scheduled way before the buyout even happened. Games already confirmed before a buyout I would not consider an exclusive.
@Pabpictu bit dramatic pal. It's a website, not an airport. You don't need to announce your departure.
@Pabpictu and… why exactly is this being said on a Minecraft post out of all things…? What, is the ol bloke not a block fan?
@Lup Xbox is [tone]-dea[f]d.
If it's not broke, don't fix it. There is already an enhanced version.

Maybe they’ll get ray tracing?
This just in, Gears of War 6 will be a PS6 exclusive. No news of an Xbox version though.
I really wouldn't worry about this too much.
I mean, even some of those "native Series X|S" cross-gen titles are nothing more than last-gen code with a metadata change for the frontend to mark as "native" (and perhaps a small patch).
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the X1 codebase using Series X|S enhancements but is now marked as "Series X|S". I think the Quality/Performance display options were removed, but that was it. Like, one day it was marked as a X1 title and the next day it was a Series X|S title - no new game download needed.
The thing is, Sony treats releases and SDKs very differently than Microsoft does for Xbox. Plus, Microsoft can do significantly more with backwards compatibility patches than Sony as well. It's PC-like in that regards.
Mojang probably had no choice but to release a PS5 native version in order for it to match the enhancements that the game has running on Series X.
I mean, I guess Mojang could just update the games metadata to give it a "Series X|S" label just to say it's now "native", but they certainly aren't making a whole new build because they don't have to on Xbox.
If it makes MS more money by getting PS5 owners to buy a Native PS5 version. Maybe its Sony's way of working with having Native PS5 and PS4 Versions in PS5 Back Compat mode - some technicality...
But MS built the Series consoles with full compatibility with XB1, the next in the Series - so can be updated etc for the hardware - same game, same price whatever 'version' you buy, it will run to the best of the hardware's potential....
This is probably simply just down to how the back compat works on PS5 requiring a native version of the game to bring up to par with the Xbox Series X/S version... We have seen this countless of times with other games that required devs to basically go in and create a native version of the games. Whereas on Xbox, devs didn't need to do that.
@Pabpictu You know you don't have to click on every article? You can pick and choose which ones you're interested in and ignore ones you don't like?
@Titntin this site constantly puts out PlayStation news here to stir up the comment threads. And when they are called out for poor wording or click bait they say that is not their intention and it was a mistake. Or they default to we are just going where the algorithm is pointing us. Either way this is poor journalism. It’s bias and meant to stir up the comments.
I thought they announced a series x version a while ago, did they not?
@sixrings Hey Im sorry you feel that way.
I dont see that reporting on the reported sku's of a Microsoft games product of such magnitude is necessarily PS news if its reporting that such a product appears to be missing from the series machines line up too. I dont really understand why you or others should be so sesitive to such a story and cant just read it or not.
However, I accept how you feel even if I cant understand.
Have a good day mate and I hope you find more stories and news that you do find relevant.
This game needs a update so it looks like the trailers.
@sixrings Video game news site, and journalism. Choose one.
But someone acting like a child, telling everyone how they're just not using this site anymore, is unnecessary, and only makes them look like a tool.
You're not owed anything by the people who run this site, and literally nobody in the comments cares about whatever nonsense you're hung up on.
Xbox realized PlayStation fans gobble up “next gen” remasters 🤣, so just hopping on the train
Hit the Sony users with the current gen stealth tax!
Which in all honesty drives me mad when companies do extra work to downgrade a game to work on XB1 or PS4 and those users get the game cheaper! Eg Jedi Survivor on X/S £69.99.... on XB1 after 17 months of downgrades and optimisations it's £44.99. Last gen users pay £25 less for 17 months extra work by the devs.
